Chapter 6: Chapter 3 — Let’s get everything in order for this great expedition!

Returning to the bar, we went inside, and the staff guided us to a staircase leading downstairs. The decor here was much simpler than upstairs, and there were small rooms separated from each other with fairly thick walls.

Could it be so the sound doesn't leak?

When we opened the door to a private room where the team was waiting for us, Petris greeted us in an enthusiastic tone.

“Oh, you have everything ready so quickly, Liria?”

“Yes! I'm still amazed at Isuke's instinct, she didn't hesitate for a second to pick out a super rare book that I didn't even know was in my family's book collection!”

“What? That's wonderful!”

Petris and Liria started talking in a rather excited tone that sounded as if they had won the lottery. I for my part… I still couldn't process everything that was happening today.

What the hell is a rich girl like her doing in a team like this? I don't think she's short of money…

The house he had gone to with Liria was ridiculously large. It could certainly compete with the house of the mayor of this town or that of a nobleman of regular status.

I decided to sit with David and Lya while Petris continued speaking with Liria. The room, though small, still provided space to have several conversations at once.

“Are you nervous?”

David asked me direct while his sister hid behind him. I remained silent for several seconds until I answered in a rather calm tone:

“No. I was just thinking about the best way to decipher that book your partner gave me”. I averted my gaze and kept a neutral tone as I leaned back in my chair. ”Are you afraid?”

David let out a big laugh.

“Of course I did, Isuke! I had to go to the bathroom three times this morning having heard all the contents of this mission. I really hope the same thing doesn't happen to you when you hear what that bastard has to say”.

David pointed shamelessly at Petris, and to our surprise, his sister joined our conversation. Her tone was faint, but I could hear her because I paid attention.

“I… I will protect all of you. I will… I swear I will”.

Her brother smiled in response to her sister's statement and stroked her head.

“By the way, one more thing, Isuke”.

“What?”

Coughing shortly, David asked in a mocking tone:

“How surprised was the former number 1 student of the blah-blah academy… with the capital of our team? Obviously, we can't compare to what they offer over there, but it's worse than nothing, right?

“Brother, shut up. Remember that Petris said…”

Intervening in our conversation, the team leader began to bring order to the situation.

“Guys! There's a time and place for everything, remember we have a big mission on our hands. Please, Liria”.

“Yes”.

With elegance, Liria placed a white card she had in her pocket on the table.

“Isuke”.

“Yes?”

I noticed how everyone had suddenly become serious and had turned their gaze to the letter.

“Could you do me the honor of opening it? This information came to my parents about the area we are going to explore. Apparently, in the last few hours something happened, and I would like you to make the announcement to the other members”. 

I nodded and prepared to open the letter to read it aloud.

“Important update, please scouting party, do not take the gold that is lying around the forest, it is a trap. So far, there are no survivors who have been able to successfully leave the new area after possessing those cursed riches in their pockets. We implore you to continue exploring the place, and above all…”

The last part of the letter was not written in black ink.

“Is this… blood?”

Showing the contents of the letter, David replied instantly with a small laugh.

“Those crazy people are insane! Did they really do that already? Liria, look at him!”

“Yes, I'm watching it, you idiot”.

Nimbly, Petris reached over and sniffed the letter.

“It is ink. They used that invention called a printer to copy the original message and essence of the explorers who wrote this”.

”Oh, that's good! So, if someday we die…”

A strange aura of excitement began to emanate from these people. There was only one person who broke with this atmosphere.

David's sister stood up from her chair and said those words out loud. I was quite surprised, as it was the first time I had seen her speak so loudly and with an aura that was quite imposing.

All the members laughed at his words.

“Don't worry, Lya! We don't plan to die”.

Petris spoke to her in a playful tone, and Liria played along.

“Right! You don't have to get like that here. Remember that we always give our best in every mission, right?”

Puffing up her cheeks, Lya's aura diminished considerably. The atmosphere in the room returned to normal.

“Sister”.

“Yes…?”

“As long as the situation allows me… I hope my last healing spell goes to you”.

For a moment, it was funny to see such a muscular man kneel before his sister who was much smaller and looked less imposing than him, but at his words she grabbed the menu that was on the table, rolled it up, and with a single blow sent David crashing into the wall.

I was left without comment. With only a menu that was as thin as a sheet of paper, Lya had bent her brother with ease.

“You idiot! I told you I won't let you die… I'll protect you!”

Throwing herself on him, Lya began to hit him repeatedly with that one with a menu.

Petris had sat next to me, while Liria just stood there watching the scene of the siblings.

“Oh, yes”.

“Don't call me that”.

“Excuse me, habit”. Coughing briefly, he continued. “What do you want to know about the mission? I suppose a student of your level would have understood by now?”

“Explains everything”.

Interrupting him, I demanded in a rather serious tone an explanation from this strange leader. Your group is peculiar. I haven't the slightest idea how he met Alexia, but this mission?

I could die if I don't investigate properly.

Puzzled, Petris started looking at various random places until he answered me.

“I get it! You want to contrast your information with mine. Certainly, academics are another world… Well! She is Liria and as you may have seen she has quite a lot of money because she is the daughter of a merchant”.

I nodded my head.

“I met these brothers when I was on a scouting mission with Liria. Apparently, they were on the run and joined us because they liked the job”.

Realizing that the conversation was taking a direction in which I was not going to get my answers, I was more direct.

“I understood all that, although there are some things that don't fit…”. I looked at Liria out of the corner of my eye. “What's going on with that forest?”

“He appeared out of nowhere”.

“What?”

“According to several reports from citizens and merchants, it appeared on a rather busy route that is between the second and third kingdoms. As you may know, the Kingdom of Farm and Astarock do not have a good relationship because of an alliance that right now… I don't think it is important for our mission. Does my explanation help you?”

“Yes, there's just one last question. When do we go there?”

“Tonight. We will leave tonight. Do you have any other questions?”

Seeing that Petris was so open with me, I shared a small concern that crossed my mind as I read the end of the letter, whose warning related that we should not trust a female voice coming from that forest.

“Do you think the warning and the final note are true? A curse of that level…”

“Well, I've never actually seen or heard of such a thing. Gold that assures your death or a voice that guides you to your end, sounds like a horror story they tell children to make them behave. Under normal conditions, I would think twice about it, but….”

“But?”

“We have you, Isuke!”
