Chapter 231 - Old Knight

 Uruk is surrounded by nature.

As well as Fontana, in the east of Uruk Territory, there is the Great Snow Mountain, a mountain so high that it is said to reach the heavens.

Strictly speaking, the Great Snow Mountain is not a single mountain but is made up of several mountains.

From the point of view of people living on the plains, it looks like a huge wall of snow, which is why it is called the "Great Snow Mountain," but in reality, it is a series of mountains made up of unnamed mountains that can be called the Great Snow Mountain Range.

The lands of Uruk are bordered by the Great Snow Mountain to the east, the demon-infested forest of Fontana to the north, and Fontana Territory to the west.

The Uruk territory borders another noble family's territory to the south, but it seems that the noble family and the Uruk family haven't had many disputes until now.

This was because a part of the mountains to the east of the territory stretched horizontally to separate the southern noble house from the House of Uruk.

In other words, Uruk and the southern noble territory bordered each other on a rough map, but they did not interact with each other.

That's why the Fontana family in the west had been battling for Einrad, a key transportation point, for years.

And the Fox Valley that was described in the documents I found in the capital of Uruk seemed to be somewhere in the knightly domain in the southeast of Uruk Territory.

The land had been ruled for a long time by a family called the Amu.

However, because of the mountainous terrain and the fact that it was difficult to expand the territory further, it seemed that they did not interfere with matters regarding Uruk too much.

In other words, even though the Amu family was located in the Uruk Territory, it was a place that was far from the House of Uruk.

I was convinced when I heard this from Payne.

The Xillia family had overthrown the Uruk family, yet they had not come to us to be spared.

From their point of view, Uruk in its entirety must be a kind of independent region that they don't care too much about.

But that doesn't matter to me.

Carlos gave me permission to fight against retainers of the Uruk family this time.

He gave me permission to take out the land governed by the knightly families in Uruk who did not obey the Xillia family.

So there's no need to hold back.

I led the Barca army out of Uruk Territory and hurriedly headed toward the southeast to reach the Amu Knight territory.

"Hey, what are we going to do, Ars?"

"Hmm, is that a white flag? Does that mean they're giving up, Baito-nii?"

"Is the Amu family really going to give up without a fight? Aren't they actually just trying to catch us off guard and give us a good beating when we get close?"

"Wait a minute, both of you. It's just a normal white flag being raised. It's a formal action. If you ignore it and attack him, you will be accused of attacking a non-resistant person."

"Alright. But are you sure that is a sign of surrender, Payne?"

"Yes, I think so. Ars-sama, if you would like, I can act as your emissary to hear what they have to say."

"You as an emissary?"

"Yep. I want to work for you, but I don't think I can suddenly show you my battle prowess in a war. If that is the case, I hope you can use me to prearrange these negotiations."

"...... Okay, okay. Go ahead, Payne. Anyway, go get their demands out of them. We've already told them what will happen if they ignored the messenger from House Xillia. Tell them not to expect forgiveness now."

"I understand. Then I shall go immediately."

I've been moving around in Uruk with the goal of getting land here.

However, as soon as the troops and I came, a man with a white flag appeared.

As Payne said, it might not be good publicity to ignore them and attack.

Since we're here, I'll leave it to Payne, who's showing great motivation.

Watching Payne head towards the approaching white flag, I waited for his return while thinking about what I should do in the future.

"It is a pleasure to meet you, Ars von Barca-sama. My name is Zitan Wong Amu, and I am the head of the Amu family."

"I am Ars von Barka. Nice to meet you, Zitan-san. Is it true that you wish to swear allegiance to Barcan and not to the House of Xillia?"

"That is correct. We will abandon the name Uruk gave us and swear allegiance to the House of Barca."

"Why is that? Payne told me that the Amu family is a knightly family that has served the House of Uruk since ancient times. Why would you swear allegiance to us, who were enemies until recently? Why would you take such an action to betray Uruk?"

"That is not true. It is the House of Uruk that my family has been loyal to until now, and never the House of Xillia. No matter what the reason may be, we will not be under the Xillia family, which betrayed the Urk family. It is of my opinion, in fact, that going under such traitors would be the most traitorous act against the House of Uruk."

"I see."

"It is also related to the fact that I met Payne there. I'm going to trust his judgment when he says he approves of Ars-sama."

"Believing in his judgement? Did you know about Payne by any chance?"

"Well, that's a surprise. Maybe you didn't know who he was? Payne is the grandson of a familiar friend of mine. That friend is Miriam, who is said to be the strongest person in Uruk. He's the grandson of Miriam, you know."

"... Miriam... Miriam is surely the old man that was co-in-charge of the Uruk Calvary at Fort Einrad. You are his grandson?"

"That's right. My grandfather and father were both defeated by you. It was definitely my grandfather who went with Einrad's Keema Cavalry."

"Seriously? You're not actually with me to avenge your grandfather and father, are you?"

"No, sir. If that was the case, I would have fought Barca with my soldiers using all my might, just like my grandfather and father had done. I would never do anything as cowardly as deception. That would be a dishonor to our name."

"Whoa, whoa, whoa. You're as stubborn as ever. Ars-sama, please believe what Payne said. His parents were just as hard-headed as he was. But that's why I can trust Payne's eyes to judge people."

"All right, Zitan-san. I get it. Well, there is no point in talking about Payne here."

"Thank you, Ars-sama. You can call me Zitan. I would like to ask you a few questions first, though. I heard that you have been researching the Fox Valley."

"Really? Well then, be my guest. Do you know anything about Fox Valley, Zitan? In the old writings, it is said that it was located between the mountains in the territory of the Amu Knights."

"Of course I know about it. But I would advise to not proceed to do this course of action. The Fox Valley is a place you should not enter. If you go there, you won't make it out alive."

"I won't make it out alive? What do you mean, Zitan?"

"I shall tell you about Fox Valley before you head there. Please listen and turn back before you cause damage to yourself."

Something strange is going on here.

I came here to take some of the Uruk Territory, but without a fight, I was told that the opponents would be joining Barca's army.

I think about this as I look at the old knight named Zitan who rules the Amu Territory.

I wondered if he really wanted to swear allegiance to me.

However, the Fox Valley, the habitat of the Nine-Tails fox, had only been preserved in a few old documents.

This old knight said that he knew about the Fox Valley.

And he even took the trouble to explain it to me.

I still didn't know exactly what Zitan intended to do.

But I decided to listen to what the knight had to say about the forgotten and unexplored region of Uruk.

CadmarLegend

Around 5 hours late, but here's the make up chapter from yesterday. I will be going and posting something about the naming stuff later, when I'm less busy. In another chapter, I'll clear out the terms I've been using, such as "Head of the family", "family vs House", nobles vs knights, stuff like that. And just as a note, I mistranslated Great Snow Mountain as "Great Snowy Mountains".  But they'll now just be called the Great Snow Mountain Range or the Great Snow Mountain.

Oh, and did you catch how Zitan asked Ars to call him "Zitan" instead of "Zitan-san"? He is trying to show that the Amu family is now under Ars' control. It's 11 pm here. I will go to sleep. Bye, have a great day!
