Chapter 232 - Nine-Tails and Metal

"Well, yes. Where should I start? Before I tell you about the Fox Valley, I need to confirm with you. Does your desire to go to Fox Valley have anything to do with the Nine-Tailed Swords?"

"Yes, Zitan. I believe that the metal or ore used to make the Nine-tailed Swords is in Fox Valley, where the Nine-Tails used to live. That's why I've come here to the Amu Knight Family."

"Hmm, so this was for the material? However, although your approach is correct, the truth is a little bit different. The ore used to make the Nine-tailed Swords was not mined from Fox Valley. It was obtained by slaying the now-extinct mamonos known as the Nine-Tails."

"Eh? According to my research, it's been concluded that the materials were not of a biological origin. The ancient Uruks really slayed Nine-Tails to craft the Nine-tailed Swords, Zitan?"

"Umu, they did. I have not seen a real Nine-tails myself, but the tales passed down in the Amu family say the swords were created after defeating the Nine-Tails, Ars-sama."

"...... Wait a minute. I'm not confident, but is it possible that the creatures had a spell that could create magic ores?"

"No, that's not quite right. It seems that they did not have any such magic. However, it is said that you could obtain a special metal from its body."

"Metal?"

"Yes. Let's talk about all the past occurrences step by step, shall we? I will explain about the relationship between the Nine-Tails, the Nine-tailed Swords, and Fox Valley."

The old knight Zitan, the head of the Amu family, began to speak.

Mamonos called the Nine-Tails once existed in the world.

After defeating them, the Uruk family was able to create the Nine-tails Swords.

 ※ ※ ※

The Nine-Tails foxes once lived in this land.

It is said that they were often seen in the nearby mountains, including their habitat in Fox Valley, long ago.

However, these foxes were very peculiar.

It is said that they could use magic, and had the ability to breathe fire so they were also called "fire foxes."

If such dangerous mamonos were to roam around, they would endanger the lives of those that lived nearby.

Therefore, it was decided to exterminate the Nine-Tails that appeared in the mountains.

Still, a force capable of exterminating the magic-using mamono was needed. Thus, knights were sent.

Perhaps the roots of the spell that the House of Uruk could use was related to the mamonos.

It would be hard to say that the use of magic related to foxes and fire, such as "Foxification" and "Oboro Fire," is unrelated.

And so, for many years, the battle between the knights and foxes was fought in these mountains.

At some point, one of the knights discovered that a metal could be extracted from the body of a Nine-Tails fox.

The metal had an unusual property: it could create flames when magic power was poured into it.

However, only a small amount could be taken from one of the creatures, not that much.

Even so, there were so many of them that it was necessary to exterminate a whole bunch.

At some point, he took out the special metal from the Nine-Tails he had killed, and after collecting them, the knight had accumulated enough to create a sword.

That was the metal that became the material for the Nine-tailed Swords.

He created a magic sword out of a metal that could manifest flames when mana was poured into it.

 It was also very strong.

A flaming sword with enough power to turn a person into charcoal was extremely difficult to defend against.

The whole of Uruk was excited to learn this fact.

There was a possibility 0f creating powerful magic swords.

Later research revealed that although this special metal could be obtained from the body of the Nine-Tails, it was not produced by the Nine-Tails themselves.

Perhaps the mamonos had been captured and bred in some way.

In anyway, it was not possible to extract the metal from other Nine-Tails that lived aside from a certain place.  That place is now called Fox Valley.

They, the Uruk people, wondered why.

As a result of various investigations since that time, they found out something.

Similar foxes that lived far away from the Fox Valley did not use fire magic and you couldn't get special ores from them.

Only the creatures that inhabited Fox Valley were able to produce them.

Because of this, it was thought that the secret of the metal lay in the Fox Valley.

Once they knew that much, they knew exactly what to do next.

One by one, greedy humans rushed to the valley to create their own Nine-tailed Swords.

However, those people never came back.

None of the people who went to the Fox Valley returned alive.

Originally, the people who went to the Fox Valley, where the dangerous mamonos called the Nine-Tails could be found, were not ordinary people, but knights.

However, those knights went to Fox Valley one after another and then disappeared.

Yet there was no end to the number of people heading to Fox Valley because the number of Nine-Tails appearing in the nearby mountains was gradually decreasing.

They wanted to make powerful magic swords, but the number of creatures from which they could obtain the materials continued to decrease year by year. Nonetheless, if they went to Fox Valley, where they thought there would still be the Foxes, they would not be able to return home alive.

As expected, the Uruk family could not just leave it be. What were the enemies that could even eventually start to kill knights?

There may be a powerful final boss.

 This situation is unacceptable.

Could there be something in Uruk Territory that would stand in the way of obtaining the precious ores?

Such a thing must not be allowed.

The people of the Uruk family, who ruled the Uruk Territory, must go into battle to secure the mysterious ore said to be in Fox Valley.

Thinking so, the Uruk family, even the Head of the House, went to search for the Valley.

In the end, though, it wasn't the Nine-Tails that prevented knights from returning alive.

The reason it was found out was that anyone that entered with the Head of the family collapsed suddenly, without having been attacked.

However, there was one person who was lucky enough to return home after almost collapsing.

It was the Head who had come on behalf of Uruk to search for the Fox Valley that had come to the territory of the Amu Knights in high spirits.

He, watching the other knights fall one after another, still managed to retreat away.

Inspite of managing to return to the people who were waiting outside, he died almost instantly.

In his last words, he left behind the words, "...Poi...son."

In other words, those who went to Fox Valley were killed by some kind of poison.

According to the results of the research conducted by the Uruk family, who had made numerous explorations since then, Fox Valley was a land infected with a poison that prevented living creatures from approaching.

A dangerous poison that is spread in the air.

This was the reason why Fox Valley was a place where one could never return alive.

But apparently, the case was different with the Nine-Tails in question.

No one knew why but the Nine-Tails were able to freely enter and exit the poisonous lands without being affected.

As for the special metal that had been used to make the Nine-tailed Swords, it was almost certain that it came from Fox Valley.

This was because there had been reports of the metal being eaten by the Nine-tails that had been captured and raised.

 The mamonos eat metals.

Only the foxes living in the Valley could harness the power of flames.

After many years of research, it was concluded that the nine tails inhabiting Fox Valley can eat and take into their bodies the special metals found in Fox Valley.

It is thought that Fox Valley has such metals on the surface that they can be eaten by the creatures.

After this fact was discovered, it was certain that the only way to obtain the materials for the Nine-tailed Swords was to hunt Nine-Tails.

Unfortunately, it was too late to do anything about it.

They had already hunted down the Nine-Tails.

The species was hunted so much that not a single one has been sighted ever since. Thus, no more swords like the Nine-tailed Swords were created.

Now, even in Uruk, the Nine-Tails are only talked about by the Amu Knights, and the legend of Fox Valley is hardly known in Uruk, with even the manufacturing method of the Nine-Tails having disappeared.

This is the reason why Zitan is thoroughly trying to persuade me into not going to Fox Valley.

 ※ ※ ※

"I see. Hunting and killing certain creatures until they become extinct is a terrible thing to do in any world."

"I think you understand now, Ars-sama. You should not go to Fox Valley. Even if you are a good fighter who has won many battles in a row, it is too much for humans to handle. It's a land that gives death to anyone who comes near it."

"Well, since you know so much about it, you must know where Fox Valley is, right? Where is it?"

"I know where the valley is... but perhaps you misheard what I've been saying, Ars-sama. I told you not to go to Fox Valley."

"No, I heard you correctly, Zitan. That's why I'm going there."

"How foolish. Humans continue to repeat their mistakes ...... You don't seem to want to listen to me. I ask you again, are you really going?"

"Yes, I am."

"...... I understand. I shall have a guide accompany you to the location of Fox Valley. But I won't care about what happens to you afterward. I've already warned you many times."

"Yes, of course. If something happens to us, we will not hold you responsible. Now that you've decided, take us to the mysterious land. Show us the way."

Zitan's long story was over. (TLN: Thank goodness. T'was tiring.)

So I decided to go to the destination as soon as possible.

I enjoyed listening to the story with great interest while finding out that the Nine-tails Swords weren't derived from non-biological metals but from creatures.

However, I did not heed Zitan's advice not to go to the Fox Valley.

It was what we had come for.

Not going there was not an option from the beginning.

Thus, with the help of a guide from the Amu family, Barca's army headed straight for Fox Valley, the former habitat of the Nine-Tails.

CadmarLegend

There's a difference between where the Nine-Tails appeared vs Fox Valley. Fox Valley is where the knights tracked the creates down into. The places Nine-Tails appeared were all around the mountains. But only the ones living in Fox Valley could use fire magic and produce ores.

Sorry if the terms in the chapter were very repeating. I'm just really tired right now because of what's been going on in the world right now and personal matters.
