I asked the soldier who was escorting me to see if my prediction was correct.

“Are we heading to the west now?”

“You don’t need to know. Shut your mouth, it’s noisy.”

At the soldier’s command, I squatted again, wrapping my arms around my legs.

I used to be the Lord’s wife in Willinger castle, but now I’m just a slave to them.

‘What happened in Isar while Grand Duke Shiraz was there?’

I tried to think, but my eyelids became heavy.

I couldn’t sleep last night thinking about running away from the Lord, but now I was in bigger trouble.

* * *

I realized as I passed through the granary where the golden field was spread out that my prediction was right.

I was astounded by the size of Isar Castle when I arrived.

Lord Willinger’s castle appeared to be the entire world, but Isar Castle was so massive that it could not even be compared to the Lord’s castle.

My hopes faded as I watched the soldiers cross the drawbridge and pass through several massive gates one by one.

‘It’s almost impossible to run away from here.’

The castle was open to anyone looking at it, but it felt like a huge prison to me.

“Don’t be lazy, get off quickly!”

While I was distracted by the scenery inside the castle, a soldier dragged me down as we had already arrived.

The soldiers and knights who had accompanied me were nowhere to be found. Of course, the appearance of Grand Duke Shiraz and his vassals was also nowhere to be seen.

I fell through another passage as I entered the castle, and it appeared that only the lower ranks remained.

“Where are we going?”

“You’ll know when we arrive.”

He took me with an annoyed look on his face and walked for a long time to the back side.

“Wait here.”

He looked at me while speaking to a middle-aged woman in a shabby-looking building.

“Come this way.”

The woman beckoned to me and I quickly walked toward her.

The woman with chubby cheeks as if she had bitten candy on both cheeks glanced up and down at me.

It was a little uncomfortable because it looked like grading of the butcher’s meat.

“She looks so weak that I’m not sure she’ll be able to do her job properly.”

She muttered to herself before nodding to the soldier as if saying she would handle it.

The soldier left with a light expression as if he had completed his task.

“Work hard and don’t cause problems in the future. You will be beaten if you move around or are lazy.”

She lectured me like a scary housekeeper witch in a dormitory.

She led me into the building after I nodded my head.

Perhaps it was used as a lodging for maids, the inside of the building was complicated and cluttered like a maze.

I followed after her, but this situation was outrageous and I laughed in despair.

‘It’s not enough to be caught while running away, I’ve also become Grand Duke Shiraz’s maid.’

The fake Lord’s wife has been turned into a maid, and I didn’t know which one was better.

Nonetheless, I felt more at ease.

When I was in the Lord’s castle, I tried to think and act like Garnett, but now nobody knows me here.

I just have to be myself. It just felt like being freed from shackles.

“You can use this bed. I’ll tell you what to do later, so change your clothes and wait quietly.”

“Yes.”

I replied obediently to the witch-like supervisor. I thought she was a real maid.

She gave me a suspicious look and quickly left.

When I was alone, I looked around, curious about the place where I would be staying in the future.

‘The maids lived here. It looks like a prison.’

From the looks of it, it looked like a dormitory for maids who did the worst of all maids.

Everyone had gone to work, so the room was empty.

On one wall, there were several bunk beds, each with a shelf above the bed.

Each owner of the bed has a different set of items on the shelf.

As I sat on the bed assigned to me, it creaked and the bed leaned to one side.

Every time I moved my body, it made a creaking sound and settled down.

‘Let’s eat well, sleep well, and stay as safe as possible here. And let’s think of a way to escape.’

I need to be quiet enough for him to forget about bringing me here. He wouldn’t even know I existed after that.

‘No one will care about a maid.’

“Get up! If you continue to be lazy, I will send you to the garbage disposal area.”

The stick pierced my skin as if it were an insect sting.

Although it was still dark outside, the maids’ day begins early in the morning.

I got out of bed, rubbing the ache in my arms and shoulders.

Every day, the hard labor that I thought would kill me continued like a squirrel wheel.

‘Ah… Rosaline’s body aches every day, she’s so tired. It wasn’t just empty words.’

For a brief moment, I became solemn as I remembered her.

I stood up from my seat, changed into a maid’s uniform that was as dark and gloomy, and stood in front of the wall. It was almost as if I was wearing sandpaper rather than cloth.

I wiped the shattered mirror with my hands and took a close look at myself.

My face appeared to be shattered into broken pieces as well.

It’s been several days since I came here.

My hands became rough like scrubbers from doing various chores, but my face strangely became whiter, fatter, and smoother.

It was probably the power of ordinary life or the fact that I felt more comfortable than before.

My body was comfortable, but the mental strain from the Lord’s castle was enormous.

However, when the bell rang, I ate, promptly fell asleep after work, and as soon as I thought I closed my eyes, the wake-up bell rang.

It felt like I was being bred, but I was quickly adapting to the maid’s daily routine.

My job is to transport food from outside the castle to the kitchen. It was a job to transport vegetables, meat, and milk all day.

The maids avoided this job because they get frostbite on their hands in the winter and sweat a lot in the summer.

I saw the maids do their chores in the castle while I was the Lord’s wife, and I knew it was a difficult job even then.

At least Willinger Castle was small, so he rotated the order of difficult tasks, but there were many servants and maids here, so each of us had a fixed job.

This means I’ll have to walk all day while pulling a heavy cart.

When I volunteered to do this, I remembered the witch supervisor’s face.

Her eyes widened at first, and she later granted my request as if showing mercy.

“Don’t say anything else later.”

This kid doesn’t know what she was doing. It was this kind of face.

It was hell for a few days.

I frequently lost my balance and fell while pushing the unipedal cart, and I thought I’d break my back at night because I was carrying heavy things.

Nonetheless, I volunteered to do this so that I could freely roam around the city without raising everyone’s suspicions.

I observed each location when I looked around the castle.

I could know all sorts of information from the air alone, such as what important things were going to happen, whether the soldiers were preparing for battle soon, and how the Grand Duke was doing these days.

It was an unexpected harvest for me to be able to hear stories from outside the castle, even if only for a moment, with Young Ji-min, who brought food ingredients from outside.

As usual, I began my day with an empty cart.

As if autumn had already arrived, the cold air lingered around the tip of my nose.

Even in this world, it was autumn, and I was feeling a little senile.

Anyone seeing me now would think I was just a maid in this castle from the start.

I was so well suited to this environment that I wondered if I had ever been the Lord’s wife.

I even thought that maid work might be my vocation.

‘What if I don’t escape and instead bury my bones here?’

I laughed to myself and looked up at the sky.

With the autumn sky fully ripe, the time had come for me to begin acting.

‘It’s time for Grand Duke Shiraz to warm up and get moving. It had to be the Battle of Kienni.’

I slowly flip through the original work in my head while pushing the empty wagon.

A crucial battle in which Grand Duke Shiraz instantly breaks the momentum of General Marcus, who is gaining power.

It was a big enough battle for him to send in both his elite soldiers from the capital and the troops stationed in this castle.

Grand Duke Shiraz and his men will leave the castle at that time, leaving the castle empty.

‘At the very least, the servants or the castle will be safe.’

Because the defense wouldn’t be as tight at the time, it was worth looking for an opportunity to escape.

As I was pushing the cart with that thought in mind, I noticed a maid ahead of me.

‘What are you doing coming out so quickly?’

It was unusual to see a maid come before me, so I was curious.

She was lighting the fire by tossing firewood beneath a large pot.

It was a long laundromat with huge pots that spewed hot steam every time the cart passed, so the cart had to be driven carefully.

Recently, there was a rumor that the Black Death had occurred in the eastern area, so they boiled everything like that every day to see if they were strengthening the quarantine in the castle.

‘It will be very difficult to spend the entire day in front of the fire.’ I’d prefer to push a cart.’

I passed by thinking like that…

“Argh!”

A shrill scream was heard.
