My theory is that people just didn’t think of it given that salt must be expensive during these times. It also looks like they didn’t know the ocean had salt in it.

While all this was happening, Historia was just staring at me and the cadaver with utter disbelief. It must’ve shocked her. I started cutting open the demon and started examining the physiology of the demon body and it seemed no different from humans. There were additional wings and the bones seemed hollow which made sense since they had to fly too. Their muscles on the other hand seemed more dense than what you’d expect from a human. That explains their superhuman strength.

“Historia! This is great! We can defeat demons!” I exclaimed.

“How, Sire?” She was completely shocked at my announcement. I don’t have to explain everything because she wouldn’t understand everything.

“Salt is like poison to demons! We just have to inject them with salt!”

A gun would make sense now. Bullets that contain salt. Did it really take me just 1 day to come up with a plan they couldn’t come up with in a year? I wonder. When I was thinking about it my phone rang. A message from Kiera, I guess.

“Kara, you’re an outsider with advanced knowledge even for your own time. Don’t compare yourself to others who are living in a world 700 years behind yours. - Kiera.”

Makes sense. Now, I have to go to a country that can supply me with metal. This demon body has no purpose for me anymore. I looked around alongside Historia for the map and found it by the side of a bulletin board. So, 40 countries, huh.

Historia pointed to the location we were in.

“Sire, currently we are here.” So, we are closer to the Union of Eastern nations as labeled on the map.

“What’s the Union of Eastern nations?”

“These are small kingdoms with a population of about 20,000 on average. It’s a union of 27 small nations. Even our capital was bigger than some of the nations.”

“So, we are in the Kingdom of Scofinia. What was the population of Scofinia?”

“Before demons, it was around 6 million. The capital, Parma, had a population of slightly over 200 thousand. We are not sure anymore.”

I nodded and pointed to the biggest kingdom I could see.

“What kind of ruler rules this kingdom?”

“Oh! That’s the empire of Deem. Biggest, richest and most advanced. The ruler is a woman named Mira Deem. People refer to her as The Ice Queen. There are many stories of her being a ruthless leader but it works since they have the lowest crime rate and you could even argue that it’s the safest kingdom to travel to. It is prosperous but they don’t have an heir yet. There are many suitors but The Ice Queen remains unmelted.”

“I see. I don’t have plans on becoming her suitor. Though a confident and mature woman might just be my type.” I pointed to the kingdom south to the empire. It was at the edge of the continent but was decently big. On the map it looked about half the size of the Empire.

“About this?”

“That is the Kingdom of Trampa. Nothing important. They’re mostly covered in snow, there is very little connection with them and news is slow. Especially for our nation since we are on the opposite ends of the continent. I’ve heard that their mammoths can carry massive amounts of weight. I once hoped to trade something for a few mammoths from them.”

“Any country that was hostile towards the Kingdom of Scofinia?”

“No. We had fairly decent relations since we were the main source for many food items. We border almost the entire coastline in the north. There are of course nations that might have attacked us but there were no kingdoms openly hostile towards us. But given the situation I think hostility in general is pointless. ” Historia replied.

“I wonder. Then, we will go for the empire. How long would it take us to get there?”

“Since we are here, maybe… 1 month. If we go through mountains then 2 months or so but that’s a safer option.”

“But what if we walk by the ocean?”

“Then also 1 month. We might not come across demons but can’t say the same about thugs. If we go through mountains, the path would be hard but we will be safe from everything but if we go along the coastline the path would be easier but longer and we will definitely come across bandits.”

“So we will walk by the ocean. I will only take 3 people with me and the rest will remain here. I know it’s unsafe but taking them along would be too much”

“Sire, you have already taught them enough that they can survive.”

“Right.” I traced the path on the map. It was in the shape of an arc. “We will use this route. I don’t want many to know this but I can’t use magic. Keep it a secret.”

“Then why tell me?”

“I’ll be taking you with me. You’d have found out sooner or later anyways. But is it common for people to not have magic?”

“To some extent, but people with no magic are not given the same rights. For example, stigma surrounding it would get you bullied regardless of your social status. You can’t inherit the throne either. You might also get disowned. Some national schools don’t even admit students who can’t use magic. They can acquire high positions but that’s only through recognition and hard work.”

Sad.

“Why aren’t you treating me any differently?” I asked and she just shrugged.

“Sire, you saved everyone, taught us many things and are trying to save the world. Of course others would’ve already started giving you side eyes but I’m not one of them. I want to save people too and I think you’re our best weapon. Plus you’re unbelievably intelligent and kind too. But I think you should hide this fact though. You’ve already proved yourself to me but it will become problematic.”

I thought about the ‘kind’ part. I’m not sure about that bit. I was also practically thrown into the situation with no real choice. These people know nothing about me. I’ll let them believe it for now.

On our way back I kept thinking of who to take with me. I think Keshi and Historia are the best options. Lyla is really of no practical use and I don’t want to separate her from Roxy either. Other than that no one really stuck out to me. I wonder when I will get these supposed powers. It wouldn’t be farfetched to say that I’m the weakest of the bunch right now. I think having a good swordsman would be nice. Maybe they can use weapons covered in saline water.

I’m really hungry though. I haven’t eaten since I got here. Ah… I would love fried fish right now. Maybe a burger too.

Now that I think about it, I’m way more relaxed than I should be. These people are literally fighting for their lives while I’m thinking about food. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I already have weakness for demons.

“Historia. Keep whatever I did to the demon’s body a secret. I don’t want anyone to know about it.”

Historia seemed good at reading the room too so she just nodded without interrogating me about it.

I can use it as a way to gain some reputation in the Empire. There is already a way for me to kill these demons but let’s play a little first.

“Historia, do you know any swordsman amongst the people I saved?”

“Leanna is the only one who comes to mind. She was part of the royal knights that directly served the king.”

“A woman in royal knights? She must be exceptional.”

Military women weren’t unheard of in my world. There were a substantial number of them to not consider it out of ordinary despite the military being dominated by men but we are talking about middle ages right now. She must be exceptional.

“Yes. She is!”

Historia’s tone changed from being calm to a bit excited. She must be proud of Leanna.

“Are you two close?”

“Yes. We are really good friends. We’ve known each other since forever.”

Historia’s tone really did change.

“Hm? I see. It must be nice having such a reliable friend.”

“Sire, do you have friends?”

“No. I wasn’t allowed to have friends.”

Due to my parents’ social standing, we had to be extremely careful about whom I associated myself with. Add in my introversion and bad social skills and you have a guy with no friends. My parents did try to introduce some people to me but none really clicked with me.

“I-I see… So, you had amnesia after being attacked by demons? That’s what I heard from Lyla but you seem to remember your past though? Why is that?”

“I forgot only a fragment of my memories and not everything. I think it’s because of the fear that my brain repressed the memories.” I need to keep everything a secret till I’m safe. With how weak I am compared to almost everyone, it’d be asking to be killed.

“Hey, is there a theocracy? Or is the continent secular?” I tried changing the subject.

“Theocracy? I didn’t bother with those nations because it’s just shady. We have 3 nations which are theocracies. It’s best if you avoid them.”

From my understanding of medieval ages from my times, churches were always shady. The power struggle between kings and popes and how drama was viewed. They banned certain books too. In the name of religion, people really committed the most heinous crimes.

When we got back, I saw all the people trying to drown Leanna.
