“Dark...so very dark. What is…? Where am…?No, Who am I? So very cold, and dark. Am I alive? Oh there is something!” out of seemingly nothing something appeared. “So very bright, and so very warm. This familiar feeling… I am being engulfed in a mothers warmth… Wait Mom!” I quickly opened my eyes to find my senses were betrayed.

I am surrounded by stone floors and walls that are the same. The room is really small, and there is a small bed in the corner. I am currently lying on the bed. In front of the room there are metal bars blocking the exit with a lock affixed to it. I tried to get up but my legs failed me and my knees met the floor. I quickly grabbed at my clothes to find I am wearing some sort of rags.

“Why am I here, and where is mother?” I tried yelling but my voice wouldn’t let me. “I am so thirsty.” I started groaning from all of the pain all over my body when suddenly a voice interrupted me. “Shut the fuck up kid, and drink this.” The voice came from the other side of the bars, and he suddenly threw a container at me. While still on my knees I just sat there staring at the container directly in front of me and tilted my head.

“Haven’t you ever seen a canteen before?” The tall and huge man yelled at me, and I had to cover my ears. One thing was for certain, and that was I knew I hated being yelled at. The man just let out a long breath before beginning to speak in a normal tone. “Grab the container with one hand, and then use the other to twist off the top. After that, hold it to your mouth and drink. It is just water.” The man clicked his tongue after finishing.

I did as I was asked, but after gulping down a large amount I started coughing repeatedly. The man let out another long breath before saying “you need to drink it slowly, you are dehydrated.” I did as I was told and before long I started to feel a little better, but I was still very cold.

“Where am I?” I suddenly asked the man, interrupting the long silence. “Ain’t it obvious? You are in a prison cell. It is for people who commit crimes.” People who commit crimes, and a prison cell? “What is a crime?” The man gave another click of his tongue before saying “a crime is when someone does something wrong. Didn’t your parents ever teach you this? How old are you anyway?”

I thought about what he said for a while before answering “I don’t know how old I am. I just lived with my mom before.” As soon as I said that a few memories of my mom started coming back to me. She would always comfort me as soon as I woke up and feed me food in the morning. I really love my mom. She had the brightest smile, and she would always make me laugh in the morning. She would tuck me in at night and tell me stories.

My favorite story she told me was one about a Fairy. A long time ago there was a Fairy who would hitch rides on carriages that would provide chocolate. The Fairy would give the people gifts in return for their chocolate, but eventually the people realized the Fairy was a powerful being. They tried to take advantage of her, and eventually she had to fly away from all of the mean humans. She lived a peaceful but sad life in the forest until eventually she found a sleeping slime.

The slime wouldn’t wake up no matter how much she tried to wake it, but the next day a girl with horns and a tail showed up. At first the girl had tried to fight with the Fairy for waking up the slime, but eventually the Fairy was able to apologize. The girl with horns said to the fairy “just as I am able to find my happy place by being next to the slime. You will be able to find your own happiness, but you must leave here.”

The Fairy did as she was asked and travelled all around the world in search of her own happiness. She eventually found it by the side of a human girl who fought for the ones she loved. The girl put everything she had into protecting her own people, which made the Fairy happy to see, and the human girl never asked for anything from the Fairy except to be her friend. The Fairy was so happy she cried tears of joy! They were the best of friends throughout their life, but the human started to grow old.

The Fairy knew the human would eventually die, but on her death bed the human only had one request of the Fairy. The human only wished for the Fairy to be happy and never hide herself. The Fairy could only grieve as her friend passed away. She wallowed in her own sadness for a century.

Eventually the Fairy made it back to the sleeping and lazy slime. The slime was completely unchanged, and the girl with horns was still there. The girl with horns remembered the Fairy and said “did you manage to find your own happiness?” After a short while the Fairy began crying and answered “I did but it is gone, and I can never be happy again. Why must humans die so easily?”

After a while of thinking the girl with horns finally answered “I do not know, for I am not human. I can send you to meet your friend though.” The Fairy instantly answered “REALLY!?” The girl with horns rubbed her chin and said “yes”. The Fairy was sent into the afterlife with her friend to live happily forever. The end.

I really, really missed the stories my mom told me. Before I realized it there were tears flowing down my cheeks as I was remembering my sweet mother. I always wanted to be a Fairy like in all of the stories that she told me. My mom is the most amazing person in the whole world. I suddenly remembered where I was before turning to the man

“Where is my mother?” I squeaked out, my voice sounding hoarse. The man looked down and thought for a minute before looking back up. “She is gone. She does not exist in this world anymore”. What is this man talking about? “What do you mean?” There is no way she could be gone. “She is dead”, he said frankly. Dead, what is that? No that can’t be. My mother could not be gone. As if reading my thoughts the man interrupts. “She is dead, and you killed her.”

What is this man talking about? She is dead? I killed her? Why? NO he is lying! Yes that’s it this man is a big stupid liar. I would never hurt my mom. I love my mom. Mom always said to never trust strangers so easily. Yes! That has to be it! This man is a big fat liar! He is a meanie! He has me locked up in this cage, and he lied about my mom! I am not stupid. If I think about it calmly then the answer is simple. This guy is just a liar.

Mother, just you wait, I will come to you and save you from this evil man and everything else in the world! Even if I have to break out of this prison to come and find you. I will save you from everything! Yes! I am the only one that can save you from everybody! I am the only one that can save myself and you! I have no need to listen to liars! I will become a strong Fairy capable of saving you, and then we will laugh together! You will tell me stories like you used to! Even if the whole world should become my enemy I will bring back those happy times! I want everything to be as it used to be! I will figure out the way and bring back everything!

I suddenly had a smirk on my face as I closed my hand into a fist. None of this is reality. My reality is the happy times spent with my mother. “Why the fuck are you smiling? Creepy ass girl!” The man suddenly yelled from behind the bars, and I had an even bigger smirk. I didn’t reply even as another man showed up, and they opened the bars.

I was smiling even as they wrapped my arms behind my back, and tied them together with rope. I was smiling even as they put a brown bag on my head. I was smiling even as they dragged me down some long hallway. I was smiling even when I felt the warmth of the sun caressing my skin. I was smiling even when they forced me down onto my knees and locked my head into something. I was smiling even when I heard the long speech someone was giving to a crowd. Finally I was smiling even as I heard the sound of sliding metal and a sudden pain in the back of my neck before my vision went black again.

My world was completely dark once more before I heard a soft voice speak to me. “Ah yes indeed”, the woman’s voice said. After a short pause she continued. “This is definitely interesting! Yes, this is interesting indeed!” I tried to find my voice, but it wouldn’t come. She continued anyways, “I can see your selfish desire. You desperately and greedily cling to these memories like it is a matter of fact. The memories of your pretend mother. Oh yes! This is amazing!”
