The sounds of rolling tires and revving engines filled the streets of eastern St. Petersburg. It was a fairly warm summer day in Russia, a time where a lot of tourists would often come to travel. The streets were crowded and busy, but to those who lived here, that was just daily life…
She sipped her coffee as she glanced across the table,
“I guess I should thank you for coming here.” Anya said with a warm coffee covered expression,
“So thank me then.” Roma sneered,
“You're an asshole.” She growled,
The two sat at a table outside a local coffee shop, the same place Anya would go each morning before work. A mist steamed out of the cup as she sat it back on the table,
“I know you don't care, but I'm getting a pay raise soon.” Anya mentioned,
“About fucking time.” Roma complained,
“Don't start..” Anya contended,
“Sorry, should I empty my pockets so you can listen to my problems too?” He berated,
“Go jump into traffic and I'll consider it. Tell me, what have you been doing lately when I'm gone? I know you're not the type to sit still.” Anya asked,
“Visiting my other girlfriends..” Roma uttered, shrugging his shoulders.
“Oh yeah, how'd you manage that, did you pay them off?” Anya reproached,
“Women love me, it's you who doesn't understand.” He shielded himself as Anya splashed her cup at him,
“You know, I remember when you came up to me and groveled on your hands and knees for me to go on a date with you.” She mocked,
“But, you did go on that date.”
“Honestly, you were such a loser, even now, you're always busy, always this, no time for that, you're always so damn selfish.” Anya moaned,
“Why the hell do you care all of the sudden? Ill do whatever the fuck I want. So if im feeling prostitutes on monday and meth on tuesday, what else am I gonna fucking do?” Roma argued, the two sat silently at the table as a gentle breeze washed over them.
“God you're lovely.” Anya professed,
“Such a cute thing to say, beautiful.” Roma smiled back,
Anya gripped onto Roma's arm,
“I hate it when you leave… sometimes I can't even sleep at night” Anya said,
“Eh? What's gotten into you? You know you could ask the kids, right? They're all grown up now.” Roma replied,
“I know, but I can't ask them that.. they have their own families, their own jobs, so I don't want to be a bother.” Anya sulked,
“Shit, those kids would love it if you stayed with them, you know they wouldn't mind one bit to keep you company.” Roma replied, he glanced over, and saw a tear roll down her cheek,
“What’s wrong?”
“You don't get it… how much I hate coming home to an empty house, how much I hate walking down all these streets alone.. you leave me on a whim and never say when you'll be back, and every night I worry that one day you won't ever come back…” she whimpered,
“Pussy.”
“God dammit! Just come home! You're always so distant and secretive, it's pissing everyone off.” Anya protested.
“Yeah yeah, I know.. I know.” Roma ended.
“Is there anywhere you'd like to go then?” Roma asked,
“You're asking me?” She questioned,
“Who else?! I've only been here a handful of times, why don't you take me somewhere I've never been.” He proposed,
We’ve only just recently relocated here to St. Petersburg, the kids have all moved out and we didn't need such a big house anymore, though, we would've liked it more if we moved to a less crowded spot, but Anya received a job offer that was too hard to turn down. His thoughts began to wander,
“Let's go to the fortress, we can walk around there!” Anya suggested,
“It's not too far, let's just walk there..” She added. As they moved further down the many streets, they dodged and weaved around the crowds that slowly filled the city,
“Man, my back is killing me, this city is so huge…” Anya spoke up,
“You're the one who suggested we walk instead of bringing the car, so don't complain.” Roma replied,
“Yeah yeah, I need to move about more, I'm getting old so I guess I need to start being healthier..” Anya commented.
“You may be old, but I'm still in my prime.” Roma proclaimed,
“Ugh, you’re older than me, I bet the new recruits are starting to gain an edge on you.”

“Bah, I have 20 years left in me before I lose to a conscript.. no, i'd probably still win.” Roma voiced with certainty,
“Hahaha, I hope so but still, you should think of retiring soon… don't needlessly waste your whole life at that place.” Anya insisted,
“I'm training someone who I plan to replace me with soon, he's still young, but he's a quick learner, his name is Nigel.”
“I'd love to meet him sometime.” Anya smiled.
After a moments walk, they eventually made their way to the cathedral of the Peter and Paul Fortress, they entered through the gates after paying their dues, and they were met with a bright golden entrance, everything from the ceiling to the floor was beautifully detailed, and filled with art.
“This place reminds me a lot about people. I've worked with many patients that had a beautiful and pure vibe to them, who've had some outright scary backstories.” Anya commented,
“Yeah, I've heard your stories of the cases you've dealt with, why the hell do you work at that place?” Roma questioned as they walked down the high open halls,
“Stop it.. It's not that serious, it's probably nothing compared to the things you've been through.” Anya shrugged,
“That's classified...” Roma remarked with a cheeky smile,
“Well, at least we didn't end up like the people here. I've heard that in the dungeons of this place, was a giant prison where the inmates were beaten and tortured, and the Soviets had attacked this place multiple times, all of that dark history inside this beautiful place.” Anya preached,
“Heh, good fucking riddance.” Roma said out loud to himself,
“I hope karma bites you in the ass someday, who knows what those guys went through.” Anya stated.. Just then Roma felt a bright flash of light when he closed his eyes.
“Gah! What was that?” He twisted around,
“You ok? You haven’t been acting yourself lately..” Anya asked,
“Wha.. I'm outside the fortress..?! I.. It’s just a migraine, nothing serious.” Roma admitted as he tried to regain his bearings… When did we get outside? I swear we just walked in.. Roma thought.
“Just a migraine my ass.. Let's go home then.. You're being way too hard on yourself lately.. You Need To Wake Up” Anya exclaimed. …
“I.. need to what?” He questioned,
That very moment, they heard a march from across the street,
a group of locals held up signs as they yelled out their twisted beliefs while holding up burning Russian flags…
“What the hell are they doing?” Anya sporadically questioned,
“Rioters.. But why? -he shook his head- Now’s not the time, we need to leave.” Roma ordered. He unholstered a 443 grach and slid the hammer back under the table, the golden gleam of the cartridge shone back at him as it was shoved into the receiver, Anya’s eyes widened as she tried not to stare.
“Let’s get the hell out of this mess…” She uttered. Screeching tires echoed through the streets as mobs of rioters began roaming throughout the city, clubbing the cars that passed by with bats and clubs. Roma stood beside her and peered ahead,
“Those people.. Aren't Russians..” Roma assessed, almost all of them could be seen wearing masks, they began throwing bricks through windows as they opened duffle bags full of what looked like molotovs,
As more people marched into the crowd, caravans began surrounding the blocks,
“Here, let's move through the alley… oompf!” As soon as Roma turned his back he was struck in the side of the head with a bat. He was surrounded..
“Roma!!” Anya screamed, He pulled out his pistol, but he heard a click, the slide stop was pulled, and there was no magazine. One of the men kicked the gun out of his hands,
“Anya!! RUN!!” He screamed.. It was then he caught a glimpse of the man covering the alleyway, he wore a crooked grin, as he held a makarov out in front of him. The color left Roma's eyes as he felt the loudest gunshot he’d ever heard shake his soul.. And Anya fell to the ground with a bloodied scream..
The cries of the rioters bombarded their ears as Roma’s world spun in circles.
“It’s you… Why the fuck are you here again, Yuu Jin!!” In an instant, Roma lunged at him with a knife from his pocket, but there was nowhere to go..
“You’re out of luck.” The man turned the gun his way, and shot him in both knees.. Roma’s cries of pain were muffled by rage as he toppled back down to earth.
“Roma.. What’s going on..? I.. Don't want to die..” She held out a hand as she sat in a pool of blood.. He couldn't speak.. As much as he wanted to.. No words would come out..
“Disappointed!! I thought you would put up more of a fight, Roma. What am I supposed to do with these last 5 rounds..?” He wavered, shaking the gun in Romas face,
“Fuck you.. Dont you fucking dare!!” Roma wanted to say.. But again, no words would come out.. He looked up at the world, paralyzed and unable to move.. Yuu Jin turned the gun in her direction.. Roma saw that she was in a beautiful white dress stained by blood.
“It's ok, Roma.. we'll find each other again.. I promis..” A gunshot lit up the dark alley, and then another, and again.. In moments.. He watched her lifeless body sink to the ground.. His vision was red and distorted.. His mind racing with adrenaline and hatred..
“And just like that, one bullet left.. I made these bullets from scratch you know.. Made special for you with love from your best friend..” He berated in a distorted tone.
“And once again, you don't have the resolve to speak to me, do you..? Don't tell me.. You've given up!” He laughed hysterically, “You pathetic bastard, stuck with a guy like me for all eternity... As much as I enjoy our weekly chats, Roma, it’s time for you to wake up…” Bang!
To be continued. …
