It was only an hour later that Halo arrived at Juliano’s assigned room. He went to drop off the samples at the doctor’s office.

But never did he think he’d see Romeo there.

As he was walking past the window, something caught his attention. Stopping and looking inside, his eyes widened.

Romeo was playing chess with Juliano and both of them had smiles on their faces.

He quickly made his way into the room.

Juliano looked up and smiled at his father, but his smile dropped when he saw the panic on Halo’s face.

Halo rushed up to the bed and picked him up. “What are you doing here?”

Romeo gazed at him, and he felt a little hurt that Halo was so on guard against him. He stood up and was about to say something, but Juliano spoke. “Daddy, don’t worry. I asked this uncle to play with me. You were taking so long to visit.”

Halo turned his gaze to his son and the look in his eyes softened. “Didn’t I tell you to not speak to strangers?”

“He said he is your friend. He showed me the picture of you two,” Juliano said with a pout.

Halo frowned, “What picture?”

Romeo took out his wallet and pulled out the picture. Holding it out for Halo to see; he smirked inwardly as he saw the look in Halo’s eyes soften.

Halo was looking at a picture of Romeo kissing his cheek as he sat on the hood of Romeo’s car.

He looked into Romeo’s eyes and asked, “Why are you here?”

“Why wouldn’t I be? I’m here to support you,” he answered.

Halo placed Juliano down and kissed him on the head, and whispered something. He walked over to Romeo and dragged him out of the room, down the passage.

As they turned a corner, Halo stopped, turned to him and punched Romeo in the face.

Romeo cupped his cheek and said as he looked at him, “Well damn kitten, you bite now?”

“Don’t call me that. Who gave you permission to come here, and how the hell did you even find him?” Halo asked.

Romeo scoffed. “Did you forget who I am?”

Halo stared at him for a while. Folding his arms, he said, “And that is exactly why I left you and said nothing about Juliano.”

“I have every right to know my son, Halo. Six years. It’s been six years without me. How can you be so selfish?”

“I am selfish? What about you? Should I have really stayed and suffered knowing very well what kind of person you are? You dragged me into that life and now you want to involve my son?” He said.

“He is my son too!” Romeo said.

It went silent between them, then Halo said, “We don’t know that for sure.”

Romeo watched as Halo walked off and narrowed his eyes. A smirk formed as he thought of how fun it was going to be getting Halo to fall for him again.

Halo returned to the room and frowned as he looked at Juliano. It was easy to tell that they were father and son.

Juliano was a splitting image of his father, from his curly hair to his perfect nose. His smile, the confidence and the way they spoke.

Juliano looked at his father and smiled. “You’re not still angry, are you?”

Halo shook his head. “You need to be wary of strangers.”

Juliano patted the space beside him for Halo to sit down. After he sat down, he said, “He told me his name is Romeo Washington.”

Halo shuddered. Hugging his son as he held back his tears, he asked, “What else did he say?”

“That you used to date, but you hate him, no,” he answered.

“Did he tell you why I hate him?” Halo asked.

Juliano shook his head with a smile. “I didn’t give him the chance to.”

Halo raised a brow as Juliano sat up on the bed and turned to him. Holding up his fingers, he started counting, “One - he looks like me. Two - he loves you just as much as I love you. Three - you left him seven years ago. Four - I am six years old. Five - I need a liver and here he is. Daddy, I’m your son, not slow.”

Halo pulled his ear. “You’re too clever for your own good.”

“I didn’t mention the best part,” he said excitedly.

Halo smiled, “What is it?”

Juliano smirked, “Isn’t my name Romeo Washington?”

Halo chuckled, “Your name is Juliano.”

Juliano shook his head. “I know the truth. Grandfather already told me everything.”

Halo rolled his eyes. His father always interfered where he wasn’t supposed to.

Outside the room, Romeo was sitting on the floor, hugging his knees with tears in his eyes. As tough as he thought he was, he really didn’t know what to do in this situation.

Halo was one thing, but Juliano, who already knew who he was? How was he going to raise him when he had no male role model?

*

Juliano fell asleep during their talk and Halo felt hungry. As he left the room, he bumped into Romeo, who was still seated on the floor.

He felt confused and sat down beside him.

Romeo turned to him, and he could see that he looked a bit lost.

“Romeo why are you…” he started.

“How could you do this to me Halo?” He asked.

Halo frowned. “Is this about Juliano?”

“Is his name Juliano?” He asked.

Halo sighed on the inside. “Romeo, listen.”

“No Halo, this is fucked up, even for me. You know what I went through. It’s the reason I am like this and why I do all those things. If my life wasn’t this fucked up, then I’d say otherwise, but Halo this? You’ve hidden my son away from me for so long and I… I wanted a child and I wanted a child with you and no one else, but here you went and hid him away from me. I’ve missed out on so much with him. How do I even look at him when he is older and ask me what the fuck went wrong between us?” He asked.

Halo stared at him as he spoke and fought back his tears, but it didn’t help. Wiping them away, he said, “Don’t play the victim card here. Every day I wish my son didn’t look like you and that something like this would never happen. I went through with the procedure because I wanted a child, not so that I could carry yours. But unfortunately it looks like we are stuck together in this shit hole.”

“We were good and you know it,” Romeo argued.

“Yes, we WERE and I don’t need you anymore. It’s over between us and even if the results come back that he is your child don’t even think for a second that you  have the right to be in his life especially if you can’t change your ways,” he said and got up.

As he was about to storm off, the doctor in charge of Juliano’s case walked over with a clipboard in hand.

Dr Martin paused in his steps when he saw Romeo, then lowered his gaze and continued on. He walked up to them with a smile. “Mr Washington, I have the results from the samples.”

Romeo stood up and stared at Dr Martin cautiously. He was one of the doctors on Vanessa’s payroll.

“But, but I just dropped the samples off for you,” Halo said confused, then looked at Romeo.

Dr Martin looked at him too, then said, “Mr Washington here paid to have the results done within the hour.”

“Are they accurate?” He asked.

Dr Martin nodded his head. “Everything is accurate that we do here.”
