Chapter 2: What do you mean, they don't produce culture and science?
Mathew was sulking. Sure, he no longer had the threat of being killed by a vampire, but he didn't have a system. He was sure that this system of his would have been an adviser, like the ones in the game.
Yet, here he was, with the wrong vampire next to him. Darn, just why did the dice roll do him this bad? He would have been so happy if he got a werewolf system. He even bet, that Yrin wouldn't have been able to kill a werewolf.
The sunset came and went, and so, Mathew decided to check up his culture and science pools. He really needed to begin to research something. Get down to building wonders, and all. For, there were the big three, which he had to get as soon as possible.
First, he needed the Great Library. That free technology that came with it would get him to the Antique Age. Then, since faith was too important to pass up on, he required Stonehenge. And finally, for that great boost in labor, he required the Pyramids. Yet, looking at his settlers, he doubted that they had even founded the city.
Not that Mathew could blame them. They were in the middle of a humid rainforest. The system really did him bad. Not only would he have to research mining, but bronze working as well! What a hip of dung. This would set him back some, seeing as he needed to build these people a granary as soon as possible.
"Yrin, do you think you can come, and help me a little?" Mathew asked, as the vampire was preparing to doze off.
"Why?" Yrin asked lazily. "You are the Civ leader, whatever that means. So, you should be able to get these people in order, shouldn't you?"
"I am scrawny, and you are strong. I require you there for moral support. Come now, Yrin, I will give you blood," Mathew said, sweetening the deal.
"If we end up strapped on a pyre, then you will pay for it," this was strange. Mathew doubted that these people had the necessary knowledge, to strap anyone on a pyre. And so, the two went to the settlers.
"It is time you began to build a city in here," Mathew said, as the leader of the settlers stood up.
"In here? With all the animals roaming around, most of them predators? No chance," the leader said, as Mathew frowned.
"Yrin, if I ask it of you, will you fight for me?" Mathew asked. He was sure that, his original system would have fought for him. Not that he would have been excellent at it, seeing as Yrin had killed him, without getting so much as a scratch.
"Your blood better be good," Yrin said, and Mathew grinned.
"Right! I, with my champion Yrin, challenge you for your position," Mathew said.
The more days that these people didn't produce any science and culture, the more days they would just be aimless. The leader took one look at Yrin, and then narrowed his eyes.
"So be it," he said, standing up.

Mathew was deeply grateful that these people didn't seem to be thinking things through. And so, the battle began. With their bare hands, the two combatants did something like a hideous way to box/kickbox.
Yet, Yrin did manage to win. Before Mathew could have stopped him, Yrin drank the human leader dry, and threw him to the ground. The other settlers all bowed.
"Right, you need to begin building buildings. No excuses, no whining. For, this is the site of the famous Yrin's Court. Got it?" Mathew asked, as the people began to take out their tools.
"Not during the night," Yrin said, as he took a hold of Mathew, and tugged him away from the settlers. "I want to sleep. You are coming with me. You still owe me blood."
Mathew gulped, but didn't resist. He had seen what happened when someone resisted Yrin. The match between the vampire and the human was not something he would soon forget.
When they came back to the place where Yrin had placed his cloak, Yrin sat on it, and motioned for Mathew to follow.
"Ok, so, here is the deal. I give you blood, and you help out, from time to time? But, do you mind not taking all that much? I mean, I still need to command these people, and..." Mathew was interrupted when Yrin tugged him to himself. He felt the fangs on his neck, and then nothing. It was almost like he was under anesthesia. It was not unpleasant, at any rate.
"There," Yrin said, when he finally got his fangs out. "Now, sleep, talking man."
"Right, uhm, right," Mathew didn't know what he had expected, but definitely not this. Just what was this world like? And, were there more reincarnators in it, to play as different Civs?
Just how far along were they? How old was the world for them? As he thought about all of this, he closed his eyes, and then fell asleep, cuddling up next to Yrin.
As Mathew dozed off, he felt as if other people were taking turns. Just how did that work, even. Time zones? And, were there people close to him? He needed scouts, but first, a granary.
Even a monument could wait, or, it could be something made hastily. For, this was a bright new world, and surely, there were no rules about him building more than one thing.
But, and that was incredibly important for his pride, before someone came up with the "Best Fed People in The World" survey, he had to build a couple of farms. To find the ocean, not some landlocked sea, and a mountain. A Civ couldn't be complete, without the Machu Picchu.
But, first thing first. The City of Yrin's Court needed to begin to make culture, and so, Mathew's mind was both trying to sleep, and thinking about ways to cheat the system.
All the times when he had wondered if he couldn't increase the culture output by covering all the buildings in murals, were now coming back to him. Now, he finally had the chance, to test it all out.
