Chapter 7: Chapter 7 – The sparing

Next morning, the guards come in and wake them up.

Cern: "Alright, get up, you two. You'll be training again today."

Konzo and Yuna get up and get ready to go back to training.

Cern: "You two, you're in the front. Yuna, you're the slowest one, so you'll be at the back of the line."

Konzo and Yuna get into position and get into their stances.

Cern: "Ready? Get it on!"

Konzo and Yuna attack each other and begin a sword fight.

Yuna: "W-w-wait! Please! I'm s-s-sorry! Please! I'll do anything! I'll b-b-bake cookies for you! I'll w-wash dishes! I'll m-m-mend your c-c-clothes! Just n-n-n-not kill me!"

Konzo: "Shhhh! Shhhhh! Relax, Yuna, it's just training. I'm not gonna kill you."

Yuna: "W-what do you m-m-mean by 'just training'?"

Konzo: "It means you and I will be sparring. You'll be learning how to defend yourself. It's nothing serious. Now, why don't you get into your stance?"

Yuna: "Oh...kay."

Konzo: "Now, stay calm. We won't be fighting to the death, just a few scratches. You understand?"

Yuna: "I understand."

Konzo: "Good. Now, get into your stance."

Yuna: "S-so what will I do?"

Konzo: "You'll block with your sword. Don't hold back, attack. Move around more. You're too stiff."

Yuna: "I c-c-can't."

Konzo: "You will. We're gonna start slow, but we'll work on it. Now, get into your stance and attack me."

Yuna: "Y-y-you want m-me to do it?"

Konzo: "Yes, but not like that. Yuna, stop being so afraid. You're shaking."

Yuna: "I-I'm s-sorry, I c-can't help it."

Konzo: "That's not an answer. Be yourself. I don't want you to fake it. Now get into your stance and attack."

Yuna: "I-I'll try."

Konzo: "Good."

Konzo and Yuna continue to spar. Yuna's attacks become less stiff. Konzo is impressed.

Cern: "Good job, you two. Move around more. Now, attack me."

Konzo and Yuna attack Cern. They continue to spar with each other. Konzo grows more confident.

Cern: "Alright, now you've improved. You're doing well, you two."

Cern: "Excellent. Now, let's take a break. You two need some rest. I sense fatigue in you."

Konzo and Yuna sit down on the ground. They rub their eyes and their heads. Yuna leans on Konzo.

Konzo: "That was a good first training session, Yuna."

Yuna: "Yes, Master."

Konzo: "Alright, now, let's do it again."

Yuna: "I'm ready, Master."

Konzo: "Good, let's begin."

Konzo and Yuna continue to spar. Konzo fights off more attacks from Yuna.

Cern: "Good job, you two. You're getting the hang of it."

Konzo and Yuna attack each other once again. Cern watches them.

Cern: "Alright, now, rest up. You both need it. We'll continue tomorrow."

Konzo and Yuna nod. They rest on the ground. They're exhausted from training.

Yuna: "I c-c-can't wait for tomorrow."

Konzo smiles. He understands Yuna's eagerness.

Konzo: "Me too."

Yuna leans on Konzo. She drifts off to sleep. Konzo carry her to bed and lays her down. He pulls the blankets up over her. She's so young and innocent.

Konzo then goes to the city market to get the clothes that the tailor is making for Yuna. He goes to the tailor and tells him to hurry. Konzo sits in the marketplace and waits for Yuna's new clothes. He sighs. He's very impatient for them to come in.

Suddenly, a man walks up to him. He introduces himself as the tailor. He says that he's very sorry for the delay, but he's having trouble with his workers. They've been sick, so he's having trouble getting them to work. Konzo asks the tailor about the clothes. The tailor tells him that the clothes should be ready for tomorrow. Konzo smiles. He agrees to wait for the clothes. The tailor smiles back and leaves.

Konzo sits in the marketplace and thinks about Yuna. He wonders how she'll react to her new clothes. He wonders if she'll be as shy as before. His thoughts are interrupted when a beggar man approaches him. The beggar man asks for money. He says that he's sick and can't work. He asks for help to get better.

Konzo thinks about what the beggar man said. Is he serious? Is he lying? Konzo decides to give the beggar man some money. Konzo hands the beggar man some money. The beggar man leaves. Konzo sighs he thinks about how life can be unfair. Even though he gave the beggar man some money, he probably never got enough to eat.

The city bells chime. It's time for the city's people to go to their homes for the night.

Konzo then head to his dorms to sleep. The next morning, Konzo and Yuna go to the training grounds. Cern is waiting for them. Cern tells them to begin. Konzo and Yuna attack Cern. They continue to spar. They're very determined to win.

Cern: "Excellent. I know you'll win eventually."

Konzo and Yuna attack Cern again. They continue to spar.

Cern: "It'll be very interesting to see the ending to this battle. I'm sure you'll both surprise me."

Konzo and Yuna continue to attack Cern. Cern dodges their attacks. Cern's movements are precise and calculated.

Cern: "Alright, Yuna. I sense that you have reached your limit. You won't be able to fight anymore today. Go."

Yuna stops attacking. Konzo continues to attack.

Konzo: "I won't stop attacking you, Cern."

Cern: "Very well. Let's see how well you defend yourself."

Konzo:"Here comes my special move."

Konzo dodges Cern's attacks and counter attacks. He keeps him at bay. He's very determined to beat Cern.

Cern: "This is no fair fight. I'm stronger than you are."

Konzo: "We'll see about that." Konzo attacks Cern. He's very skilled with the sword. Cern barely dodges his attacks.

Konzo: "Come on. Show me what you've got."

Cern: "Alright. I'll show you."

Cern blocks all of Konzo's attacks. Cern's defensive abilities are extremely high.

Cern: "Alright, now that I've got your attention I'll show you the first rule of fighting."

Konzo: "And that would be?"

Cern: "Never let your guard down."

Konzo: "Got it."

Cern attacks. He's very quick. He strikes Konzo in the chest. This causes Konzo to stumble backwards. Cern attacks again. He strikes Konzo in the back of the head. This causes Konzo to fall to the ground.

Cern: "Not bad."

Cern: "You've got a strong defense. But I think you lack some of the finesse that I have. Still, you've got potential." Cern leaves the training grounds.

Yuna goes to check on Konzo. She finds him unconscious on the ground. Konzo regains consciousness. He finds Yuna sitting next to him. She is cradling his head.

Konzo: "Yuna?"
Yuna: "Are you alright, Master?" Konzo: "Yeah...I think so."
Konzo tries to get up. He falls back down to the ground. He tries again and falls again. Yuna rushes to help him up again.
Konzo: "Thanks."
Konzo looks at the sunset. The sunset glows bright red.
Konzo:"I will get stronger so no one can take anything from me. I will be as strong as Cern."
Yuna: "Master, I hope you get there."
Konzo: "Thanks."
Konzo looks at the sky. The stars are shining.
Konzo: "I wish I could do something great with my life."
Yuna: "You do great things everyday, Master."
Konzo: "Really?"
