Chapter 8: Chapter 8 – Learning A Technique

Konzo then heads back to the market where the tailor is making clothes for Yuna. The tailor is named Aiko. Aiko is a small woman who has brown hair and green eyes. She is sewing the clothes for Yuna. Aiko looks up at Konzo. 

Aiko: "I finished sewing these for you." 

Konzo: "Perfect." 

Konzo pays 5 gold and takes the clothes from Aiko. Konzo then takes the clothes to Yuna. 

He asks her to put on the clothing. Yuna: "Master , why are you doing this for me?" 

Konzo: "I just think you deserve a better life. I want to see you happy. I want you to be able to live a life without being beaten or abused." Yuna: "Thank you, Master." 

Konzo: "Now put these on." 

Yuna does as she is told. Yuna puts on the clothing. It consists of a white blouse and a black skirt. She also has white leather shoes on. Konzo is amazed at her transformation. 

Konzo: "I can't believe it." 

Yuna: "What? Master?" 

Konzo: "You look absolutely beautiful." 

Yuna: "Really? You think so?" 

Yuna is deformed but she still has a beautiful body. She blushes and smiles. 

Konzo: "Yeah. You look really pretty." 

Yuna: "Thank you, Master." 

Konzo: "Why do you blush like that?" 

Yuna: "I'm not used to this." 

Konzo: "You just blushed for me? That's pretty rare." 

Yuna: "I'm not used to you noticing me like this. I'm used to people ignoring me or even hitting me for being deformed." 

Konzo: "I won't let anyone do that to you." 

Yuna: "Thank you, Master." 

Konzo:" Here's your mask" 

Konzo hands Yuna a grim reaper mask. 

Konzo: "Wear it whenever you are out." Yuna puts the mask on and it fits her face perfectly. 

Konzo: "You look really good in it. Much better than me in my armor." Yuna: "Thank you, Master." 

Konzo: "Let's go. 

Konzo takes her to a field where they can see the moon and they sit down. The moon is bright and beautiful. Konzo: "I used to hate the moon. But now I see how beautiful it is." 

Konzo: "Do you know why I wanted to be strong? 

Yuna: "No, 

Master." 

Konzo: "I wanted to be strong because when I was a child I had nothing. I was orphaned at a young age. I had no one. I lived in a place where everyone had someone, and I didn't. I was nothing." 

Konzo: " Others were bright and smart, while I was slow and stupid. I told myself that I'd never amount to anything, that I should give up. And that's what I did for a long time. I didn't care about anything."

Konzo:"I didn't have anything to look forward to, so I just stopped caring about anything." 

Konzo:"One day I decided that if I wanted something I would just steal it. If I got caught, so be it. I was young and stupid and didn't care. Then I joined a group of drug dealers and robbers robbing banks and stealing money. It turned my life around. I finally had a purpose. I was no longer alone or afraid. I thought to myself I had friends and a place in the world. I felt happy for the first time in my life." Konzo: "But then I fell apart when all my fellow thieves used me as a decoy to escape when we were getting chased by cops. They all escaped except me. I was left behind to face the cops. I couldn't run fast enough to escape and I was caught. I was sentenced to death for my crimes. I was given the death penalty, and I chose to take it." 

Yuna: "Why did you do that?" 

Konzo: "Because I had nothing to lose. I had no one who cared about me, so why not die? I chose death because I didn't have a reason to live anymore." Konzo: "It's a sad story, but it's over now." 

Konzo: "Let's go back to the city. It's getting late and we need to rest." Yuna: "Yes, Master." 

They return to the city. They go to the inn and rest. 

Konzo: "We're going to head to the training ground tommorow." 

Yuna: "Yes, Master." 

Konzo and Yuna wake up early the next morning. They quickly head to the training grounds. They arrive at the large stone pathway that leads to the training grounds. Cern is waiting for them. Konzo and Yuna quickly follow Cern towards the training ground. 

Cern:"Today I will be teaching you a sword technique that can kill enemies.." 

Konzo and Yuna arrive at the start of the training grounds. There are several large boulders that line the edge of the grounds. 

Cern: "This technique is called Shredding Edge. It can be used to destroy objects or cut through people. It is especially useful in cutting down infantry. Observe."

Cern demonstrates the technique by slashing through a small boulder. He cuts through the boulder perfectly. Konzo: "How did you do that?" 

Cern: "This technique requires focus. The closer you are to the boulder, the more powerful the cut. The further away, the weaker the cut. Here, I will demonstrate again." 

Cern: "Watch." 

Cern slices his sword through the air and bisects the boulder perfectly. Konzo: "How did you do that!?" 

Cern: "I told you, focus is the key. Now, try it." 

Konzo: "Alright." 

Cern: "Focus on the boulder."

Konzo: "How?" 

Cern: "Close your eyes." 

Konzo: "Why?" 

Cern: "Because if you don't, you will lose focus and cut through the ground, not the boulder." 

Konzo: "Alright."

Cern: "Imagine yourself slicing through the boulder." 

Cern: "Now, concentrate on the boulder." 

Konzo draws his sword and closes his eyes. 

Konzo: "Alright." 

Cern: "Imagine yourself cutting through the boulder." 

Konzo: "Concentrating..." 

Cern: "Cut now!" 

Konzo opens his eyes. Konzo: "Whoa..." 

Cern: "Perfect. You did it." 

Cern: "That was the basic principle of Shredding Edge. There are different variations you can do, but the basic principle is the same. You just need to master this one." 

Konzo: "Alright." 

Cern: "Now, you two, practice this technique." 

Cern leaves the training grounds. Konzo and Yuna begin to practice the basic principle of Shredding Edge. Konzo: "Alright, Yuna, we'll give it our all today." 

Yuna: "We will, Master." 

They begin their practice. Yuna slices her sword through the air, but her blade bounces off the boulder. Konzo's blade slices cleanly through the boulder. 

Yuna: "Master, I can't slice through it." Konzo: "Try again." 

Yuna: "Alright." Yuna slices her sword through the air. She keeps the sword against the boulder, so it doesn't bounce. She manages to make a small nick on the boulder. 

Konzo: "Alright, good job." 

They continue to practice. Yuna manages to slice through the boulder after several attempts. 

Konzo: "Good job, Yuna. I knew you had it in you." 

Yuna: "Thank you, Master." 

They continue to practice. Hours pass as the sun continues to light up the land. The sun is at its highest point in the sky. It is midday. Yuna and Konzo are exhausted. They sit on the ground, leaning on each other. 

Konzo: "Let's take a break." 

Yuna: "Okay." Konzo lies down, closing his eyes. Yuna lies down next to him, closing her eyes as well. 

Yuna: "I feel so tired, Master..." 

Konzo: "I know, Yuna. It's been a long day. We'll take a break soon, and continue training tomorrow." 

Yuna: "Yes, Master." 

Yuna and Konzo sleep soundly. The sun is high in the sky. It is midday. Konzo and Yuna are sitting on the ground. Cern comes up to them. 

Cern: "Well, I see that you two have finally finished your training." 

Konzo: "Yeah, we did. I didn't know that you were waiting for us. How long have you been here?" 

Cern: "I have been waiting for you for about five hours. You took a long time to finish your training." 

Konzo:"I have a question." 

Cern: "Ask away." 

Konzo:"To which community does this training ground belong to?" Cern:"What?! You have been training here for days and you still haven't known?." 

Cern: "The Training ground belongs to the Shadow Guard Mercenery guild." Konzo: "The Shadow Guard?." 

Cern: "Yes. Haven't you heard of the Shadow Guard?" 

Konzo: "No. I haven't." 

Cern: "Alright. Now, I must tell you something. The Shadow Guard is a neutral guild. They protect the borders of the Empire. They also protect the citizens. They are a neutral guild, so they protect everyone. They only take a small fee from the merchants. Anyone can join the Shadow Guard, regardless of race, gender, or status." Konzo: "Who are the leaders of the Shadow Guard?." 

Cern: "We have a leader for each community. I lead the Training Ground community." 

Konzo: "Who is it that leads the Shadow Guard?" 

Cern: "I can't tell you that, I'm sorry." Konzo: "Why not?" 

Cern: "It is a secret." 

Konzo: "What are the rules of the Shadow Guard?" 

Cern: "There are no rules." 

Konzo: "I see." 

Cern: "Alright, I must say good bye now." 

Konzo: "Alright." 

Cern leaves. Konzo and Yuna get up and begin their practice again. Yuna manages to hit the boulder several times. 

Konzo: "Good job, Yuna. Let's continue." 

Yuna: "Yes, Master." 

Hours pass as they continue to practice. The sun starts to set. It is evening. Konzo and Yuna are exhausted. They sit on the ground, leaning on each other. 

Konzo: "We should rest in the inn for the night, Yuna." 

Yuna: "Yes, Master." They lie down in the inn. Yuna and Konzo sleep soundly. In the morning, they continue their training.
