After the first period of the current class, the students entered a recess.
I found out something when I was sitting next to Takane-san. Even though we were dating, not everyone in the class knew that, so it was hard to know how close we should be.
I greeted her in the morning, which we already talked about last night on the phone, but after just exchanging a few words, I got a lot more attention than I thought I would. Everyone’s eyes seemed to be staring at me.
If Takane-san and I, who did not go to the same junior high school, were talking intimately, it was not surprising that people would wonder what was going on. I didn’t need to move for the next class, and I wanted to talk to Takane-san, but I was in a situation where I couldn’t do that.
“Nozomi-chan, good day to you!”
“Hello, Nakano-san.”
“Ufufu… You’re the same as always, Nozomin.”
“Yui-chan, do you call Takane-san Nozomin?”
“No, just now was the first time…”
“Is it too soon? I would also like it if Nozomi-chan suddenly called me ‘Yuipo,’ so I can’t help it.”
“Yuipo… That’s a cute nickname, Nakano-san.”
Takane-san does not use nicknames for people, but it does not mean that she is distancing herself from Nakano-san, which I think is her own characteristic.
“Nakano-san, you get along well with Asatani-san and the others? Ah, that reminds me, you were in the same middle school.”
The girls who had formed a group with Nakano-san also arrived, and the place became lively at once – Or rather, they gathered at Takane-san’s place next to mine, which made me feel slightly cramped. I tried to pull out my textbook and notebook, thinking I should prepare for the next class.
“To tell you the truth, I have been a fan of Kiri-chan since middle school.”
“In that case, why not just say ‘we’ve been friends since middle school’? Or did you think you weren’t friends with me, Yui…?”
“Th-That’s not at all what I mean. I’m Kiri-chan’s friend? Mai furendo?” (T/N: My friend in JP pronunciation.)
“Yeah, Yui-chan, I’m your furendo. OK?”
“OK!”
Nakano-san said, making a circle with the fingers of both her hands. Since they talked in the library, I thought they were usually considered as friends, but I guessed this explained to people that she did not talk with Asatani-san in class.
Yamaguchi-san, Inagawa-san, and Watanabe-san also came, bringing the total to nine – and even other female students seemed to be gathering. As expected, I should voluntarily offer my seat and leave from here – When I thought this,
Takadera and Ogishima beckoned me to come and sit in the front. As I got up from my seat, I felt Takane-san, Nakano-san and Asatani-san’s eyes on me, but they did not stop me. In this situation, I was grateful for their consideration.
“Senda, it must be tough for you, being so close to Noarin’s fans. Well, I do envy you.”
“Thank you for inviting me too, Senda-kun.”
“Yeah, me too, thanks for agreeing on such short notice. Do you have family outings or anything like that?”
“Yeah, my dad’s hobby is going to a barbecue, but that’s for another day.”
“What about Senda’s family? Mine go on trips, too, though it’s my dad’s hobby to go to the hot springs.”
“My parents aren’t home during the holidays, so I guess that kind of thing happens in the summer or winter.”
“What, are you alone in the house most of the time?”
“I’m not alone because I have my sister. Well, she’s probably going somewhere with her friends.”
When I came to think of it, I hadn’t heard about my sister’s plans. We hadn’t gone out as siblings for a while, so I just thought I would accompany her if she went shopping or something.
“How many years apart are you from your sister?”
“She’s two years older.”
“Senda-kun’s older sister, huh… I have a feeling she’s a nice person.”
“I guess you could say she’s nice…? Well, she’s just a normal sister.”
“I have an older brother and a younger sister, as well, sometimes we fight and sometimes we don’t. My sister doesn’t want to go to the hot springs, so it’s a little hard to convince her. She’s in the first year of middle school and she’s going through puberty.”
“Everyone goes through periods like that. I was a bit of a rebel myself.”
It was surprising that the apparently mild-mannered Ogishima had a rebellious period, but surely everyone had such a period – even I had some.
“Ahh, I knew it would be a bit of a drama space when I thought of Noarin being in the classroom.”
“Drama space?”
“I don’t get it either, Takadera.”
“In my mind, the drama takes place where Noarin is. I wonder if I sound like a heavy fan when I say that.”
“If that’s what you mean, I suppose I can understand a little. But I think it would be better to separate Kiritani-san on TV from Asatani-san.”
“Seriously, that’s the problem. The ones who can do that are the true fans. Senda, did you see ‘Ao Riri’ yesterday?”
“!!!…(Don’t just suddenly throw that into the conversation…)”
I was about to say something like that, but I held back.
When we talked about watching the drama, I felt that Asatani-san’s behavior changed a little. Knowing that, I didn’t think it was a good idea to talk about “Ao Riri” here.
“Senda is a fan of Noarin…Asatani-san, right? You don’t have to say anything, I know you’re watching. I know how you feel.”
I somewhat regretted not talking about the drama yesterday itself. I knew that Takadera had no bad intentions, but even if he swung the subject here – I’d be in trouble, or rather, it would sound normal to Asatani-san and the others.
“I’m, um, a fan of Asatani-san, that’s…”
“Don’t hide it, don’t hide it. You watch ‘Ao Riri’ every week and get nervous, don’t you? Noarin’s charms echo throughout the 3,000 worlds, doesn’t it…? I’ve wet my handkerchief three times already.”
“Takadera, why are you talking like that when that ‘no-rin’ is in the classroom?”
“Uwah… You mean, I’m a man without delicacy?”
“Yeah, you have no delicacy.”
“Gugh…!!!”
Although I was not sure why this was a shock to him now, I was in no mood for it – No, he was not telling a bad story, and I should be the one who should be calming down.
As casually as possible, I looked toward the gathering of Takane and the others. Then my eyes met Inagawa-san’s.
Inagawa-san smiled smugly for some reason – I didn’t know why, but her smile was terrifying.
“Kiri-chan, Takadera-kun says he watches ‘Ao Riri.'”
So she really heard it – I knew she could hear it normally. I looked at Takadera, but he was now completely frozen in place, like a statue.
What would Asatani’s reaction be? I wondered if she would be salty towards ‘a man with no delicacy’ – Of course not.
The Asatani-san I knew would not take that attitude.
“So he’s been watching me. But I do get nervous when I think of all the people in my class watching.”
“Takadera-kun, Kiri-chan says so. Please keep your fan activities under the radar.”
“Ye-Yeah. Roger that… It means we can continue to do this as long as we’re under the radar.”
Takadera seemed to be taking this as positively as possible, but seemed to have lost some of his enthusiasm after being chided by Yamaguchi-san. I didn’t think he needed to go so far as to be depressed.
“Did you hear that, Senda? She said I can continue to be a fan as long as it’s under the radar. Isn’t this official recognition?”
“Well, good for you.”
“I’m approved, so you’re approved, too. Also, are we going to hang out together? Isn’t this just too much? We’re about to use up all the luck we’ve saved up.”
I was not told that Yamaguchi-san and her friends or Nakano-san’s friends would be coming, but I did wonder about that – Just as I thought this,
“Ah, I wish I had three days free so I could go with you. I have club activities all through the holidays.”
“I have to go to my dad’s parents’ house. We go every year, so it’s not like I can suddenly stop going.”
Apparently this is what happens when you get together with people who have the same schedules.
Nevertheless, the girls were creating a wall in front of Takane-san, so I couldn’t even see her – when I thought this,
“…! C-Coming… Noarin, no, Asatani-san’s coming…!”
Asatani-san unexpectedly left the group and walked over to us, which I could tell was the reason why Takadera started to panic.
“Thank you for watching. Was it Takadera-kun?”
“Y-Y-Yes! Both high temple or low temple is OK! …Uwah, I’m a fan!” (T/N: Takadera means ‘high temple,’ hence the low temple.)
“Don’t be so nervous. I’m just another student at our school… Right?”
Asatani-san looked at me and smiled shyly. When she said, “Right?” I couldn’t react naturally – all I could do was make eye contact with her.
Like a fickle wind, Asatani-san rejoined the group of girls. This time, perhaps trying not to be overheard, Takadera hunched over my shoulder.
“Senda, you were too nervous to talk, weren’t you? I’ll do something about it and give you a chance.”
“Wh-What chance…?”
“I’m talking about supporting Senda as a fellow fan.”
I was tempted to say why he was talking as if he was superior to me, but he didn’t seem to mean any offense, so I couldn’t say anything.
I was not sure whether I could explain everything that happened with Asatani-san to Takadera either, so I wondered if I should be lenient and take advantage of Takadera’s thoughtfulness – When he said ‘chance,’ it probably wasn’t that big of a deal since it’s Takadera we were talking about.
The pre-bell for the next class rang and I returned to my seat. I felt like I hadn’t seen Takane-san in a while, but I refrained from looking at her too much.
“Welcome back, Nagito-san.”
“…Y-Yeah. I’m back.”
A whispering exchange. Takane-san’s whispering voice, which even the person sitting in front of me couldn’t hear, wass so pleasant that it almost tickled my ears – I might even have a fetish for it.
After I turned to the front, this time I saw Takane-san looking at me – even though I was sitting next to her, I had to make an effort to talk to her. That’s why I had to make sure I didn’t miss the chance.
