Chapter 12: Return

I wonder why ……? I’ve successfully cleared up the misunderstanding, but I’m not quite sure how to explain it…….

“If this was going to happen, I might as well have stayed misunderstood as a herb geek …….”

“ What do you mean, ────’ herb geek’?”

It was Silas-Sensei, ──── and no one else, who conspicuously responded to my muttering.

Before I knew it, he was behind me and was crouched at my feet.

Holding more than twenty different plants to his chest, he never took his eyes off the grass.

Perhaps he was desperately searching for the medicinal herb he was looking for. Because there are many rare medicinal herbs here in the imperial villa.

‘I thought you were suspicious,……,’ I said, relaxing my shoulders and taking three steps backwards.

I slowly open my mouth, keeping an eye on the sensei’s hand as he moves through the grass.

“ A herb geek is a term used to describe a person who loves medicinal herbs. The meaning is almost no different from the herb maniac.”

“ Hmmm? I see. I thought it was a new plant specie.”

Silas-sensei looked a little disappointed as he continued to talk to me, seemingly uninterested.

He shrugged his shoulders as if to say, ‘That’s boring,’ and immersed himself in his work.

To begin with, what am I …… to be misunderstood as a new species of plant? What kind of situation……?

I am taken aback by the tsukkomi (retort) like argument.

“I can’t understand  Silas-sensei’s thought process,’ I thought to myself. ──── He looked up quickly.

“──── I finally found it!”

Suddenly, Silas Sensei’s eyes sparkle as he shouted out loud.

In his black leather gloved hand, he was holding a brown medicinal herb.

Apparently, he had finally found the herb he was looking for.

“I’m glad you found it. By the way, what kind of herb were you looking for?”

Out of curiosity, I stretched a little and peered into the teacher’s hand.

But the plant in question was so completely ensconced in Silas-sensei’s hand that I could only make out the color of its leaves.

As I picture the brown plant in my mind, the teacher looks back at me vigorously.

“This is Peran grass, a medicinal herb that only grows in the right conditions! It’s mainly used to relieve constipation and neutralize pain! What’s especially amazing is that if you take too much, you’ll get poisoned and die! This is just so magical ……! It dissolves your brain and organs! Even though no substance has been detected to have a dissolving effect!”

Silas-sensei was very lively as he happily explained about Peran grass.

“God, I can’t wait to study it!” he exclaimed, rubbing his cheek against the peran grass.

No, that …… is a poisonous plant, isn’t it ……? Is it safe …… to touch it directly?

I only knew the outline of Peran grass, but I thought, ‘Is that the right way to handle a poisonous plant?’ I  worried.

While I was wondering whether I should interfere as the amateur I am, Silas-sensei stood up vigorously.

Perhaps he was filled with talking about medicinal herbs until he was satisfied, he seemed calmer than before.

Even though I said that, it’s only “on the surface”,… he couldn’t hide his relaxed cheeks and sparkling eyes.

“Everyone, assemble! Line up with me in the front! It’s a little early, but we’re going back to the mansion!

Pulling out a loudspeaker magic circle from his pocket, Silas-sensei called the students to assemble.

The magic circle was still in effect, as if he had left the one he had used earlier unattended.

” what a waste of magic power,’ I thought to myself in dismay as I put myself on the shelf.

But I gave up trying to do anything about Silas-Sensei, who lacked magical knowledge, and turned myself around.

I mixed in with the group of general students who were hurriedly lining up and proceeded to the back. Then I got to my position.

“Okay, everyone’s lined up. Okay, let’s go.”

Silas Sensei slowly walks away as he calls out to the students through the loudspeaker magic.

Watching the gradual progress of the line, I too moved forward.

Then we turned back the way we came and walked back to the front of the mansion.

“Over there, it looks like they are still in the mountains.”

Perhaps not even remembering the name of the team, Silas-Sensei describes the hunting team as ‘over there.”

Then, when he went up the steps in front of the entrance, he looked around restlessly.

But he didn’t see Nigel-sensei, the lead teacher, or any of the male students who were members of the team.

Well, it’s no wonder he couldn’t find them …… because the mountain is located behind the mansion. I’d be surprised if he could find them.

I glanced at the wall clock in dismay, “Why is he so out of it ……?”

The hands of the clock were pointing to 11:45 a.m., which was 15 minutes before the meeting time of 12:00 p.m. The other side was not back yet.

“It looks like they haven’t come back yet, so let’s disband first. You can write your reports in your rooms or eat at the cafeteria, or do as you like. Then, we are dismissed.”

Silas-sensei turns around with a “thank you for your hard work” and a smile on his face.

With a hand full of plants, the sensei eagerly retreated into the mansion.

I know you want to start your research as soon as possible, but you don’t have to leave like you’re running away from something …….

Stunned by Silas-sensei’s words and actions, I couldn’t help but let out a giggle.

The other students were also taken aback and had indescribable expressions on their faces.

But since they understood that it was useless to say anything to Silas-Sensei, they dared to keep their mouths shut.

After making eye contact with each other, they begin to move at a leisurely pace.

Some joined up with friends, some were going into the mansion, and some were waiting for the hunting team to return. …… Everyone did as they pleased.

Well, I think I’ll go to the cafeteria. If things go as discussed, I have work to do this afternoon. I need to recover my strength while I’m at it.

I turned my feet toward the mansion, thinking, “What’s on the menu for lunch?”

Just as I was about to move forward, following my appetite,────, a voice called out to me from behind.

“──── Miss Charlotte, may I have a word? I have something I need to tell you.”

The familiar voice caught my attention, and when I turned around,──── I saw the figure of Lady Clarissa there.

With curly red hair blowing in the wind, she looks at me with a serious expression on her face.

“There are people here, so let’s move on to another place.”
