Jade didn’t know how she ended up here, crouching in the much by a shallow river with Diamond chomping noisily on the plants beside her. Yesterday had been a blur. She had escaped from the palace in the early hours of the morning, bringing only the clothes she was wearing and a beige bag hanging from her shoulder filled with food and a book or two about what was edible and what was poisonous in the forest.

But, she had Diamond too, she couldn’t forget that bit. Diamond was a large dun stallion, a bit more on the younger side. He had carried her about a mile and a half the day before- far away from the incident.

Jade never wanted to leave the palace.

Yet here she was

Scrounging up bruised apples and sitting in the mud while her 5 sisters and 3 brothers ate gourmet scones, and fresh cream, sitting on clean plush seats, wearing soft and clean silk and satin………… such a wishful thought that was for her now-

Diamond nuzzled her side, snorting. Jade sighed and grasped his dark mane, letting him pull her to her feet. Out of the many horses in the barn- Diamond was one of the youngest and fastest, even though he could act up sometimes. While learning to ride, Jade had wanted nothing more than to be placed atop him… but when she finally did he had thrown her in a matter of seconds. A few months later she tried again, this time staying on for longer. And not much after she gained the ability to work with him almost (in her opinion) flawlessly. That’s the thing no one tells you about horses, she mused as the two of them stepped through the forest to get to a clearer path to mount, they take more time and effort to learn how to work with than anyone else.

“One… Two… three,” She hoisted herself up in the saddle and landed softly, feeling DIamond shifted and hesitated beneath her, needing to run. She adjusted her grip on the reins before squeezing her legs together and clicking her tongue, Diamond blasting off at full speed.

Luckily, the path was relatively flat and straight, since Diamond seemed to gain more energy than usual by galloping past his limit the day before and sleeping on sticks and stones. If there had been sharp turns or hills… well… Jade wouldn’t be on the horse anymore.

Then again, a well-worn path meant more people, traders, travelers, and merchants would all be coming down the path. She momentarily took one hand off the reigns to adjust the hood and mask covering her face. She couldn’t be too sure that the stories of “Princess Jade” hadn’t reached the other Kingdoms.

Diamond finally started to slow down once they had traveled about half a mile down the road, and his frantic gallops changed to canter, canter to trot, and trot to walk. The day prior finally seemed to be catching up to him. But when his hoofbeats weren’t the only sound Jade could hear, she was finally able to appreciate the crisp autumn air and the songbirds singing one last time before they traveled for the winter.

She couldn’t help but smile. It was all so calm and solitary, no servants rushing around to grant her parents everything they ever wanted, no stuffy halls and too-clean white marble floors and walls that hurt her eyes. No one tailing her all day. And a part of her- that was sort of glad that she had run away…. But still, she REALLY REALLY missed everything else about the castle.

Then the peace was ruined. Footsteps. Quick. Frantic. Running towards her. Jade froze as a girl appeared, running quickly down the path. Without saying a word the girl grabbed Diamondś reigns, making him whiny and freak out, and swung herself onto Diamond’s back, “GO!” She screamed, “Mover it!”

They were off again- running from god-knows-what with a stranger clinging desperately to Jade and trying not to fall off.

“What are we running from?!?” Jade screamed, hanging desperately on Diamond's neck, terribly off balance.

“Uh- I might have- accidentally- angered the faeries!!” The girl yelled back.

Jade cursed. The faeries look nice and pretty- but it was well known that one wrong move and they wanted your head. Off of your body. She felt the girl take one hand off of Jade’s waist, and heard as she started slicing any faeries that came near with a sword.

It felt wrong to say, but, Jade had never had so much fun in her entire life. It felt strange too, Diamond galloping at top speed, being chased by faeries, and letting a stranger use her sword to leave a trail of bloody bodies behind them.

Jade didn’t know exactly when they were no longer being chased, all she knew was when Diamond stopped suddenly, and Jade fell off the side, dragging the girl down with her. They both lay on the ground, giggling, as Diamond stared doe at them, huffing.

“That was amazing!!” the girl said excitedly.

Jade cracked a smile, “Yeah… but who are you?”

The girl sat up and stuck out a hand, “Frisk.” She had short auburn hair, tan and freckled skin, and hazel eyes. She wore a long-sleeved white blouse, leather vest, belt with a sword hanging off of it, black leggings, and tall leather boots.

Jade smiled, “Jade.” She took her hand.
