I didn’t fall asleep or unconscious or anything, but it was nice to just be able to lay down. Not that I felt like I could move anyway, even if I tried.
“Over here!” A manly voice shouted. A really muscular Monoeye ran around the corner. I could see red flashing lights in the distance. Whaddaya know, they do have a fire department in this world too. “Are you okay?”
Y’know, I wanted to be nice. I really did. But at that moment that was the absolute stupidest question I could have imagined being asked. It wasn’t the guys fault. I know that. He’s just doin’ his job. So I didn’t respond at all. If you can’t say something nice don’t say anything at all. I pretended to be unconscious.
So he picked me up. His relatively cold hands on my burning hot skin felt like ice and caused me to exclaim.
“Thank the divines you’re awake.” As he said that, another few people came and got the cashier.
“He’s a lot worse for wear than I am” I said, groaning. He placed me on what felt like a stretcher and two others carried me off towards an ambulance.
As I was being carried across the parking lot I got to look up at the stars. The stars have always been very calming to me. They make you think about your own ultimate insignificance. I can understand how that would be daunting to a lot of people but it reminds me of how temporary your suffering is too. Just as there’s an end to your life, there’s going to be an end to whatever you’re going through. It’s enough to keep me going at least.
When put into words it’s a lot more depressing than it actually is in my head.
The ambulance took me off to some clinic where I was able to sleep on a halfway decent bed. At some point in the night I guess the harpy found me again because I woke up to her silently staring at me and Clara passed out in a chair.
“Hey” I said to the harpy.
“Are you well?” She asked.
“I’ve been better” I chuckled. I was covered in minor burns and everything hurt.
“Okay” she said, smiled, and curled up in a chair. Her wings covered her face and she fell asleep.
A little bit later Clara woke up. “I swear to the gods if you get into another life ending situation I’m going to kill you myself” she said.
“Glad to see you too. How’s the other guy?”
“He’s alive. Just concussed” she paused “you’re okay… right?”

“I mean…. I don’t think I can move very well but I don’t think I’m dying either”
She looked worried. “There’s a healer on his way. This village doesn’t have any of their own, it’ll take a little while for him to get here though”
So it would seem that their reliance on magic has also hampered their system of medicine. It’s a double-edged sword, because it seems that there’s no superbugs, because viruses can’t evolve to defend against magic, but there’s no way to cure illness and injury outside of magic. And not everyone is able to learn every kind of magic. Monoeyes can learn types of magic other than fire, but it’s very difficult for them, and Clara isn’t entirely sure if there is a species that specializes in healing magic. So most clinics in most towns are designed to hold people over until traveling physicians can make it to town.
“So…..” great. More awkward silence.
“Oh! I brought you something!” She said, and pulled out of her bag a flask of…. Alcohol. Great. She handed it to me and looked at me, waiting for any response.
I sheepishly took the flask. No getting out of this one. Besides, it was small. How bad could it be?
I threw it back in one go. I thought I knew a burning sensation, seeing as how most of my upper body had first degree burns, but my throat experienced a new level of pain. Good jeans what was in this?! Thumbtacks?
The next little while was very fuzzy, but I do remember most of it. I loosened up and actually talked to Clara. I feel bad that it took alcohol to get us to actually talk.
“Y’know….. so many people dream of this. Going to a new world, I mean. Back home everything is so hard, but…. In a different way. You don’t get to just drive off into the sunset with a one eyed girl and a bird person. You have to…. Y’hafta pay taxes, and see your abusive grandparents, and listen to your mom whine about dad. Everyone wants to go to a world where they’re happy. So I guess it’s kinda cool that it happened but…. I can’t just stay here, y’know?”
She looked at me for a bit. “Yeah…. I know. Your world sounds hard too. I don’t think I ever wanted to go to a different world, there’s so much of mine I haven’t seen.
“What’s stopping you?”
“The same things that stop you from being happy in your world. Responsibility. But…” she inhaled “I’ve decided that it’s my…. Responsibility…. To make sure you get home safe. So if that means I have to explore the world, so be it”
She got up and walked around a little. “Do they have any snacks?”
“Sure! Nuts or sausages?”
You’re kidding me.
