The hospital room was decent sized. You could tell that this wasn’t a very big city, so they were able to focus on room quality over quantity. There were a few paintings on the light blue walls, as well as a few chairs and a large window with curtains. Next to one of those very curtains was Clara, staring outside very intently.
“Hey Clara?”
“Yeah?” She turned to me.
“Can I feel your hair?”
“Uhm…, sure?”
As I had suspected. Her hair was very soft and pleasant to feel. Her face was a little red.
“Wanna know something kinda embarrassing?” I asked.
“Sure… I guess”
“I like it when my hair is soft. After a shower, when I’m dry, sometimes I’ll just pet my own hair. It’s kinda weird” I chuckled. “Your hair is nice too” I said before stopping.
She looked to the side then pulled up one of the legs on her jeans. Her leg was a little hairy. It looked kinda manly.
“I… uh…. I live alone. So, y’know, I don’t really have to worry ‘bout people seein’ me, so I don’t shave as often as a lady probably should. But…. Sometimes I like feeling the texture of my legs when I’m laying’ down….. it’s probably weird but….”
I chuckled. “I guess we’re both weird. I bet everyone has weird little habits and fidgets like that.”
“Y’think so?” She said before rolling her pants leg back down.
“Probably. My mom would sing a lot of religious music” I chuckled. “It got annoying, but I could ever tell her that to her face. She was really sensitive.”

At some point I noticed that the chair that the Harpy was in was empty. You’d thing a giant bird person would be a lot more noticeable moving around but I guess not. Huh. I never really got to ask her name, or have an actual conversation with her. I guess that’s what happens when one of you is on an opposite sleep schedule to you.
“My dad didn’t really sing. He worked at the factory I work at now. A lot of the workers would sing to pass the time but he didn’t join in. He took me to work with him a lot because mom wasn’t around, so it’s not like I didn’t get to be with him.”
“Oh…, what happened to her?”
She was quiet for a bit. “I…. As far as I know, she died when I was born. Healer couldn’t make it in time, which wouldn’t be a problem but somethin’ went wrong.”
“Oh…. I’m… I’m sorry…..”
“No. Don’t be. I ain’t. There’s no sense in mourning someone I never knew, and I had more than enough mother figures in my life.” She smiled. “What was your mom like?”
“Oh boy. Get comfortable, this might take awhile” I said, and then told her about the most complicated person in my entire family.
In a way, it was nice to be able to rant about my family to someone, even if I wasn’t sure how much they actually understood. It was also relaxing to just be able to hang out with someone. I’m not great at small talk, though, so I wish we had some video games to play together. That’s my favorite icebreaker.
The day turned into evening. The window was open, which we didn’t notice because of the curtains, but we’re made aware of it when the harpy burst back into the room.
“You’re well?”
“Y-yeah” I said. “Hey, I never asked your name. You’re usually asleep when I’m awake”
She walked over to the side of my bed and looked down at me. “Ina” she said, before lifting her left leg to reveal something in her talons, which she dropped on the bed. It was a bag of apples. “Are you hungry?”
“Yeah, of course” I said, grabbing the bag. They were all fresh and delicious.
