The healer arrived the next day. Ina, the Harpy, had stayed up with me. Despite having the opportunity to talk to her, we weren’t entirely sure why she was hanging around with us.

“You’re human. Humans are north. You are south.”

That’s the most detailed answer we had gotten from her. We also didn’t learn much else about her other than she like shiny objects, red objects, fruit, and meat.

The healer was a man, a priest, from the Holy Church of the One Divine. His name was Joshua. He was a middle-aged human man in a blue suit with a purple tie. He had light red hair and a short stubby beard, matching in color.

He came in and greeted me with the kindest of eyes I’d ever seen. Everyone else had cleared the room to give him the space he needed, though he himself admitted that was unnecessary.

He shook my hand and a golden white light appeared from him. It separated from him, taking the form of a humanoid, though it wasn’t very detailed. The glowing human placed his hands on me and my burns mended themselves. Every bruise, scrape, and cut I had from ever since I had arrived here had vanished. Even injuries I sustained long before I was brought to this world were gone. It was….. almost addictive. I could see this being the equivalent to painkiller addiction.

“I must say, it’s refreshing to see a human this far south” he said. “Are you a missionary?”

“Oh… no, I’m not. Just passing through”

“Oh really? That’s quite unheard of. Between us, it’s nice to hear. I’ve traveled the empire thousands of times over by now, and it’s always a shame to see how much humans are missing.”

“The world is big and beautiful and diverse…. But it’s also hurting, and I hate to see it. That’s why I do what I do” he smiled at me.

“If you’re a human, how can you do magic?” I asked

“A blessing to me was given by the Divine when I pledged my life in service to him”, he said. It fit in with what Clara had said about only the rich and powerful humans being able to use magic. A priest in a large religious organization would fit that description.

“Well, thank you again. I feel more alive than I have in years” I said, standing up. My body was stiff from laying down, but outside of that I felt more energized than I had in years.

“It’s a pleasure” he said, shaking my hand with a firm grip. I don’t know enough about the church to decide whether or not I trust it, but this guy feels alright. He bowed politely then left in a hurry. He probably has a lot of places to go.

I met Clara and Ina outside. Clara gave me another flask of alcohol to celebrate my first magical healing. I dumped it out when she wasn’t looking, leading her to seem amazed at my alcohol tolerance.

“I’ll have to get ya some more powerful stuff when we get to Cerea. The centaurs know how to make some damn good beer” she slapped my back so hard I stumbled forward a bit. Ina, in an attempt to try to stabilize me, grabbed my shoulders with her talons from above. This was going to be a long trip.

We set out on the road that night. Clara and I hadn’t done much while I was in the clinic, so we weren’t really tired, and we figured we might as well keep Ina company if she was going to hang around with us for awhile. Our next stop was Cerea, a province that, when independent, was a territory owned by a number of Centaur tribes. When the world was a much more violent place, they used to be a warrior race. As the world became more civilized they turned to farming, but they’re still the first called to battle whenever there’s a need for soldiers, making them the primary military force in the empire. They seem to like this arrangement.

The entire time Clara was explaining all of this to me Ina was having trouble riding the car. She insisted on sitting on the top of the car, however the wind kept blowing her off of it. She was either very stubborn or very stupid because the pattern of her getting on top of the car and getting blown off continued for a few hours before she suddenly flew in through the passenger side window and curled up on my lap. It reminded me of those pictures of those giant Great Danes laying down on their owners despite being their size. She wasn’t very heavy, thankfully, but it was still incredibly awkward and uncomfortable in more ways than one, not the least of which was the fact that the sudden action caused Clara to swerve off of the road.

Thankfully we didn’t crash, but running off of the road gave me flashbacks of a car accident I had back in my world, and it took me awhile to calm myself back down. strangely enough, the soft feathers and weight of Ina acted almost like a weighted blanket and helped me calm myself. She seemed to be oblivious to everything, having already fallen asleep.

“Are you okay?” Clara looked at me, sounding a bit annoyed.

“Y-yeah. Just a little….. buried…. Here” I said, trying to lighten the mood. She got out of the car just to make sure we were alright. After confirming that we were, Clara decided to take the opportunity to go back to the truck bed and lay down. I tried to recline the seat but it didn’t go back very far. When I lived at home with moms dog, she’d often try to sleep on my stomach while I was laying down. While I enjoyed the show of affection and trust, I didn’t want to sleep like that, much like I don’t right now. But what can I really say about it? Then again…. I don’t really have any obligation to her, much like I didn’t have any to the dog. I lifted her up. She’s surprisingly lightweight, which was a relief. I placed her next to Clara in the truck bed and laid next to them both. Another pleasant day has come and gone.
