I looked up at where the voice came from. What I thought was a large bird was some kind of harpy. She was a short girl, maybe about four feet tall. In place of arms she had black feathers wings, matching her long black hair and black feathered bird legs. The legs ended in giant talons, which were covered in blood. I assume from the dogs.
She was wearing what looked like some kind of potato sack with a belt around her waist keeping it secure, and she also had a satchel going across her chest.
“Uhm… I’m going…. Back to town” I said. I’m not going to travel alone, or at least unarmed, again. This was a bad idea. I didn’t think this through. This whole situation was absolutely absurd.
“What town?” She asked. She had a soft voice and a curious expression, though she also gave off an air of general unintelligence that I couldn’t really explain.
I didn’t know the name of the town I had just came from, so I just pointed in the direction I thought it was in. In all honesty, I’d kind of gotten turned around in all of the excitement. She turned to look where I was pointing.
“Oh, okay” she said before beginning to flap her wings. I was very confused as to what she was doing until she wrapped her talons around my arms. She then lifted me into the air, although not very high. She then silently flew me for a little while. I had a lot of questions and honestly wasn’t sure if I was dreaming or not. But I was too tired to care.
After a little bit we landed. We didn’t make it too far but we made a lot more distance than I would have on my own, so I was thankful.
I sat down on the ground, content to just sleep on the hard ground. I didn’t even care that there was a strange bird girl standing motionless staring at me.
“They’re coming” was spoken in a creepy singsong voice, which woke me up from my dreamless sleep. I’m not sure how long I was out, but it was going to have to be long enough. I felt groggy but a little more energized, at least for the moment.
The bird girl was staring off into the distance. I followed her gaze and saw two dogs slowly creeping towards us. If the harpy would carry me a distance again we could definitely outrun them. But before I could even run the plan by her, she took off into the air and lunged at one of them. The other one charged at me. I grabbed my lighter and lit the makeshift torch again just in time to swing it at the dog, burning it’s face. It backed up, before trying to circle behind me.
I spun around to keep my eyes on it and it lunged again. I smacked it with the torch so hard that the torch itself broke. It got knocked back and I started to run. I saw a car in the distance. Finally, legitimate hope. If I could just last a little longer.
I was tackled to the ground. The dog was on top of me, pinning me down. It took every ounce of strength that I had to hold its jaws off back from me. If I survived this, I was going to feel it in the morning.
Suddenly I felt a huge blast of heat and the dog screamed in pain. It jumped off of me and ran a short distance away. It regrouped with the other dog and they both ran off into the wilderness. What had just happened?
I looked up and saw Clara, next to her pickup truck. Her hands were on fire.
