My name is Clara Terassa. I’m a 20-year-old truck unloader for Mountainside Produce. I grew up in Mountainside, and just waved goodbye to my only excuse to ever leave.

I think at some point in everyone’s life they have the urge to just hop into their truck and drive off into the distance. To not stop until they discover the adventure they’ve always longed for. That’s how I’ve felt my whole life.

That’s what I was thinking when I looked down at the telecommunications device Nathaniel had given me. It was full of pictures of the adventures he had gone on. He had left his hometown, something I’d always dreamed of as I listened to the radio.

I stopped by the pub. I… I didn’t want to be alone right now. An opportunity had literally magically appeared before me, but I was too scared to take it. Why? Why didn’t I just go?

I slammed back a pint of ale. While the workers around me were making merry like they did every night, I was kicking myself over and over. I ordered another one. And another. Eventually, Brock had to carry me home. Hey, it was the first time in a few months that’s happened.

“I’ll tell Bruno that I’ll have to cover your shift tomorrow” he chuckled “‘Could use the overtime anyways. Got them kids to worry ‘bout an’ all.” He said as he placed me on my couch. He was a true gentleman. Never once went into my room, even though he’s carried me to my house countless times.

“Mmmmmmthankshh” I blurted out.

“Not a problem.” He said, before starting to walk out the door. “It’s been awhile since you’ve gotten this drunk. Is it about that time again?” He asked. Shit. I hadn’t even thought about that. I nodded.

“Yesh. It’s…. Three yearsh now?”

He bowed his head solemnly and left. I laid my head down on the couch. It was wild to think there was someone else in this couch not too long ago.

My dream was a barrage of memories. I was young, watching my dad go to work. He let me come with him sometimes. He was a bit older, but damn was he a good worker and a strong man. You’d never be able to tell his age. I remembered him unloading boxes from some automobile that manifested right before my eyes. It was such a magical experience for me. He winked at me while he did it. He made it look so fun.

“I wanna do that too daddy!” I jumped up and down and he picked me up. He laughed and carried me home.

While we walked that now familiar path home, we passed by smiling faces at all sides. I was too young to go to the pub so dad would leave me in the shopping district while he went inside drinking. The lovely ladies there took care of me during those times.

Everyone in the community took care of me at some point or another. Dad looked at me. “You’ll always have a place in this town. It’s where you belong”

I woke up in a cold sweat. It’s been a long time since I’ve had that dream, and it’s never been so vivid before. This is where I belong, but it’s not where I want to be. Maybe…. Maybe it wasn’t too late.

I grabbed a bag. I packed some clothes, some… personal items…. And maybe a gift for Nathaniel for abandoning him to the wilderness.

“Ah shit” I said aloud. “I didn’t even think about the animals.”

I grabbed some food, threw on a fresh shirt, and ran down to my truck. I left a note saying “this is where I belong but not where I want to be” and raced off down the road. Who knows how far he’s made it by now?

Well it turns out he didn’t make it very far. I couldn’t tell what I was seeing at first, but when I got closer I could see it. He was being attacked by two chupacabras. A harpy was handling one of them but the other had him pinned.

Anger welled up inside me. Anger, and fear. I hit the one attacking the harpy with my truck, knocking it back. Then I turned to Nathaniel, and for the first time in years, my magic activated. My hands burst into flames, and I shoved the chupacabra attacking Nathaniel, catching it on fire briefly. It howled in pain and ran back, the two of them running away.

Nathaniel looked up at me. He looked really worse for wear. This was my fault. I sent him out into the wilderness alone. I’ll never forgive myself for this.

The harpy was the first to speak up. “Where are you going?”
