Side Story 16: Dear Friend (II)

Eris Misérian and Helena Antebellum had a subtle relationship. Externally, she was her childhood friend, but Eris treated Helena as a competitor and kept her in check.

When Eris pointed out Helena’s tone, attire and behaviour one by one, everyone was busy consoling Helena, instead of caring about her.

“Don’t expect me to move on as easily as others do, Helena Antebellum.”

Helena realised when Eris scolded her that she shouldn’t make a sound while eating.

Even though she grew up with the crown prince, since she was old enough to help out, it was natural for her to leave her mother’s arms and sleep and eat with the servants her age.

Had it not been for the extremely unusual circumstances of her drinking tea or sharing a meal with the prince, Helena wouldn’t have cared that she ate with sound all her life.

However, those around her, except for Eris, had never tried to teach her, even if they might have understood her ignorance. It had always been like that.

So Helena was rather grateful to Eris for pointing it out openly. This was because she thought Eris was like a teacher who taught her what to do and what not to do.

In order to gain her trust, above all, one must not do anything that the other person hated. Especially for those who sought perfection like Eris, one mistake would be more fatal than a hundred favours.

In order to not make a mistake, Helena decided to observe Eris’ every move first. And she learned a few facts.

First, Eris Misérian hated Helena Antebellum.

She knew that Eris hated her, but she thought it was regarded as an area of likes and dislikes. It was ‘dislike’ because she didn’t want to be close to her since her personality and tastes did not suit her.

So Helena dared to think that if she tried, maybe they could be friends.

Soon after, Helena realised that that idea was an innocent and arrogant judgement.

Not as much as the esteemed lords, but noble girls would sometimes gather and enjoy hunting. Hunting did not mean catching big beasts.

Unless she was a lady from a mountainous region, there was little hunting in the townhouse, so catching rabbits and birds was only one thing, and it was practically a walk on horseback.

Anyway, hunting was hunting, so the servants had to accompany them, and of course, only women were recruited because it was an event for the ladies.

Usually, the servants of these events were selected with very good physical strength, so everyone doubted their ears when Helena’s name was called from the list of servants to follow.

This was because it was clear that Helena’s thin arms would only be a burden, not a help.

The servants who were friendly with Helena whispered that Lady Misérian would try to bully her.

While holding onto Eris’ horse reins and walking a little bit, everyone around them glanced at Helena.

They all whispered something in each other’s ears with a sign of ridicule. Even the positive Helena shrank at the subtle silence.

However, Helena did not even suspect that Eris hated her and deliberately made her a servant even while she walked around until her feet blistered to pick up the arrows Eris shot. She was just guessing in her mind that she must have been chosen because it was easier to use the first servant she saw.

And an incident happened. As she was digging through the bushes to pick up the arrows, one of the lady’s arrows was fired at Helena’s back.

Helena screamed and collapsed in burning pain. Was it intentional?

However, the lady, who actually shot the arrow, was pale as if she was the one who was hit by the arrow. She looked around with a confused expression as if she didn’t know she would really get hit by the arrow.

“I…. I am just trying to threaten you.”

The lady, who realised what she had said, covered her mouth with both hands. In a view blurred by pain, Helena unconsciously followed Eris.

Eris looked surprised. So Helena could see that Eris was not deliberately trying to hit her.

However, at the same time, she seemed to be happy that Helena was hit by an arrow, so Helena realised that Eris hated her more than she thought.

Because her beautiful green eyes did not even contain any sympathy.

Secondly, the reason was not only because Alecto loved Helena.

Many people said that the reason Eris hated Helena so much was because she lost all interest from her fiancé— Alecto.

Well, Helena’s idea was a little different. Envy, jealousy…… There was nothing like that, but that was a secondary issue.

Like dogs and cats, they had different language systems. From her birth to the environment in which she was raised, it was only natural that nothing was the same.

“How dare you pity me?”

“That’s not what I meant…….”

“How impertinent! Do you think it’s reasonable to be treated equally with me as the subject of a traitor’s family?”

She also set a sharp blade in the hand she reached out in favour. No, it seemed unforgivable that Helena offered a favour to her. Eris regarded Helena’s favour as deception.

“I’m saying the obvious thing, but when I stand in front of you, I become a bad person. Do you even know how humiliating and miserable it is?”

She remembered her trembling voice and her eyes.

It was like that. If it were someone other than Helena, if Helena had not been the main character, this world would have naturally ruled in favour of Eris.

The traitor’s daughter, the commoner…… Not only was it absurd to get close to the crown prince, but she would have never dared to be on the same line with the crown prince’s fiancée.

Eris wouldn’t have been treated as a villain either. It was natural to punish people who were presumptuous.

It was only after she realised that she was the main character and became a witch that she began to see things that were invisible to her.

Eris was designed as her opponent.

It would have been better if she had rather come to love her like everyone else, but Eris Misérian was destined to meet disastrous consequences after hating and cursing Helena Antebellum.

But if God gave Eris Misérian such an ending, why should she lose everything to Helena? Helena thought it was unfair.

At first, she decided to make Eris the main character for herself, but as time went by, she thought it made sense for Eris to become the main character.

Thirdly, it was more difficult than expected to go against causality.

She went through several trials and errors. She desperately defended Eris and tried to help Eris, but the world was not so easy.

People praised Helena when she defended Eris. If she helped Eris and tried to make her shine, Helena drew more attention. No matter how hard she pushed them away, people approached Helena.

Alecto, in particular, did. The world wanted Helena to fall in love with Alecto.

Under the name of coincidence, she encountered Alecto a few more times, and it sometimes occurred that she, in crisis, was saved by Alecto at the “appropriate time.”

Around this time, Helena also refused to yield.

At the risk of being burned at the stake, she confessed to Alecto that she was a witch.

Then a strange thing happened. Alecto forgot he even heard that. It wasn’t just Alecto. Everyone around her did not remember Helena’s declaration.

Perhaps it was against the law of causality for her to turn out to be a witch. Hubris, the only person who recognised that she was a witch, remained silent.

Because he fell in love with her.

In the end, Helena confessed everything honestly to Eris with the feeling of grabbing a straw. She was the only person in this world who didn’t love Helena, so just in case. And Helena’s guess was correct.

Helena lit a fire over her hands in front of Eris’ eyes, leading Eris to believe that Helena was a witch.

Although no one believed in Eris, Eris was more relaxed just by the fact that she was holding Helena’s weakness.

“I don’t want to marry Alec. I, who turned into a witch in the first place, should not be next to him. So… I want Lady Misérian to help me.”

Eris was a person who would not refuse a given card, and Helena did not hesitate to be used.

Helena was also willing to comply with Eris’ request, which seemed a little too much. Now that she had the power to listen to it.

She didn’t know because she had never had it, but it was surprisingly free and pleasant to have strength.

This was especially true when using that power for someone other than herself.

Finally, the two got close. When they peeled off the prejudice and stubbornness that had been overlaid on each other, they could at least gain trust, even if they could not be friends.

The two talked more than before and taught each other.

The world still hated Eris, but Helena believed that one day the world would love Eris, just as she was now so close to Eris.

It was an overly innocent idea. Hope was sometimes poisonous.
