Side Story 15: Dear Friend (I)
After Medea left, Helena’s palpitations did not stop. She was convinced that her curiosity, which had always been in the corner of her heart, would soon be resolved.
Helena sneaked out during the night when everyone was asleep and waited nervously for Medea under the moonlight. The only thing she could do was wait because she didn’t set an exact appointment time.
It was vague, but it was okay. Waiting patiently was one of the things Helena was good at. After digging through the dirt with the nose of her shoe, Medea finally arrived.
“Did you wait for a long time?”
“I just came out.”
“You don’t have to lie to be considerate of me. Should we walk a little bit?”
Medea and Helena walked on the grass for a while without much conversation. In fact, Helena was very nervous, so she didn’t even know where she was going, but she unconsciously followed Medea’s direction of walking.
When Helena suddenly felt strange and looked up, she noticed that they had already left the Imperial Palace.
A huge round table, which she had never seen before, was located in the middle of the forest. If this was the Imperial Palace, there was no way that she, who was born and raised there, would not have seen such a large round table.
As if sensing the movements of someone approaching, the conversation between the people sitting at the round table was stopped and they looked back at Helena and Medea. It was unrealistic and dreamy to see women with completely different appearances sitting in one place, waiting for them.
Medea and Helena sat down, and the women finally opened their mouths again.
“Can you guess why you became a witch?”
“W-Well..….”
“She doesn’t even know what a witch is exactly. There’s no way she can know how she became a witch.”
When Medea shrugged, a woman with dark green hair and heavy makeup began to explain while touching her hair, as if bringing up an old story.
“A witch evolves when she feels desperate…… That’s what people say. It’s usually grudges that make us change. It has to be strong enough to shatter all conventional wisdom we’ve ever believed in.”
“It wasn’t a grudge, Circe?”
Medea was surprised and looked back at the woman, and the woman snorted and pointed to Helena with her chin.
“No. Can’t you tell when you see her face? There’s no resentment on that face.”
At Circe’s words, everyone looked back at Helena, and Helena was somehow shy and shrank. It was true. She had never hated anyone in particular.
Regardless of whether Helena did or didn’t, Circe moistened her throat with the tea in front of her for a while and continued her speech.
“Whether a grudge that was strong enough to break the existing mindset came first or breaking the old mindset came first… It was subtle, but it was definitely a different condition.”
Everyone’s expression became strange at Circe’s words. Helena listened to Circe and looked back on what she had recently done, but there was nothing special.
While doing chores in the Imperial Palace…… Drinking tea with Alecto…….
Seeing Helena engrossed, the dark-haired woman pointed out.
“Did you hear the bell ring thirteen times? What did you do right before the bell rang?”
“Ah.”
Only then could Helena get a sense of what they were saying. The reason why she became a witch. It was related to a question that she couldn’t speak out due to the fear of being laughed at by others.
“The whole world…… I thought it was moving for me.”
Her words made the witches’ breath stop. They looked at Helena with a different gaze than before, and reached out to Helena as if possessed.
Helena readily accepted dozens of hands, not only the face, but also the neck and shoulders. Finally, they admitted quietly.
“For that reason….”
“But you’re right. This world exists for you. You are the protagonist of this story. You became a witch like us because you realized that you are the protagonist. Oh my, I’m getting angry.”
A sharp contempt and hostility appeared on the faces of some witches. At that reaction, Helena was terrified and shrugged her body.
Medea reached out and covered Helena’s eyes with her palm. Then she whispered.
“Please understand us. We turned into witches because we gave up even the bare minimum of humanity. We just learned for the first time that one could be a witch without any pain like you. But… How is that possible?”
“Is something wrong? I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“A witch is a being that transcends human beings. They are more like monsters, similar to dragons and orcs. To be more precise, we are nothing more than mutated foreign objects in this world. God didn’t create us, so we exist when we shouldn’t exist.”

Medea, who was chewing her nails, said,
“This world was created for you. Don’t you know what this means? You said you would make a carrot cake, but you created a contradiction by omitting carrots when actually making the cake.”
(QC/N: think of a witch as the ‘carrot cake’ and the grudge as the ‘carrot’.)
“What? Then… What happens?”
“I don’t know. This kind of thing…… I’ve never experienced it or never actually thought about it.”
“But… if you can make a cake without carrots. Can’t we just make another cake?”
“It’s an analogy. Would this be as easy as baking a cake?”
At Helena’s innocent question, Circe burst into laughter. The eyes of the gray-haired witch, who had been watching Helena, shone yellow. She said,
“Maybe she’s not a witch, this child.”
“What are you talking about, Scardy?”
“Unlike you people, I can see the thread of this child. God’s intentions still remain in this child. If she were a witch like us, it would have been cut off earlier.”
“Causality has a plan, so it left this child like this. If this was an incident which was really against causality, the world would have fixed it somehow.”
When the dark-skinned witch spoke, everyone nodded in agreement. Only Helena, who couldn’t imagine how the world would have changed it, tilted her head and asked again.
“How does it fix it?”
“By making it a thing that never happened. Or replacing it with another incident. In your case… the sound of the bell might have been an auditory hallucination, or someone in the royal family suddenly died and it might have changed it to hear the ‘real’ bell.”
Medea shrugged her shoulders and asked her.
“I wonder if there is any need to disguise yourself as a witch… But, if you want, you can live a life other than ‘cake’.”
Everyone envied Helena, who was loved because she could live comfortably in the world without having to do anything difficult. Even though Helena had never wished for such a life.
If you said this out loud, some people might have pointed fingers at you for being satisfied and content.
But Helena didn’t want to receive cuteness. If she wandered around, rather than having someone take her to where she wanted to go, she wanted to learn to read the map and arrive on her own.
Everyone except her lived like that. A life in which one was scolded if they were clumsy, they tried not to repeat the same mistakes, overcame the difficulties of their life and were rewarded for their calluses in the end. Why was she not even given the chance of a humble life?
Helena was neither for ornamental purposes nor a pet.
She wanted to live like a human, just like everyone else.
And now, when she finally became a non-human being, she began to see hope that she could live like a human.
“Of course, before that, you’ll have to bake another ‘cake’ instead of yourself and then leave.”
The person who would be the main character on behalf of herself.
Helena knew the right person for that question. Eris Misérian, who was gorgeous, smart and always confident.
She was the only one in the world who didn’t fret to be liked by Helena. No, she was actually the only one who hated her.
What should I do to make Eris the main character of this world? That was too vague a question for Helena, who had yet to even realize that she had become a witch.
She tried to ask the witches, but they didn’t know either. They knew of the existence of the ‘main character’, but that was all, they said that they had never lived as the main character.
“We don’t even know how to become the protagonist, so how could we know how to escape from the fate of the protagonist?”
“But.”
“You’re still acting like the main character, baby. Life doesn’t always go your way. If you try everything you can and you fail, then we’ll help you.”
The witches only shook their heads saying that. They were right. She couldn’t get an answer for free without even trying. Helena decided to do what she could first.
After reading a few books in the Imperial Library, Helena could barely get even a clue.
Usually, the ‘main characters’ in stories were the beings whose wishes came true. And those who made those wishes come true were usually called ‘helpers’.
If she made Eris’ wish come true, wouldn’t she be able to change from a protagonist to a helper?
She wasn’t sure. However, Helena decided to focus on that for now because nothing else came to mind.
The helpers in the story were in a friendly relationship with the main character or were at least trusted by the main character. The trust of ‘Lady Misérian’, not anyone else’s.
She had already lost her confidence.
