Side Story 2: His Name (II)

— Can’t you just live with me like now? There’s nowhere to go anyway. If that b*stard comes back, I’ll really die then. Huh?

The voice that pretended to be relaxed gradually grew faster and eventually, changed to a desperately clinging tone. In order to win the boy’s sympathy, Kynthia revealed with his mouth the secret he had been hiding. Kynthia’s complexion turned pale when the boy didn’t say anything.

The boy turned off the fire and quietly handed Kynthia a cup of hot water. And he led the trembling child to the bed.

— First, breathe and sleep. Let’s get up tomorrow and talk again.

Only then did Kynthia begin to sniffle as if relieved at the boy’s voice. Only after confirming that he had finished drinking the water did he come out of the boy’s room.

The day was getting bright. He held his breath quietly. The boy did not let go of the tension, even though he could hear the sound of Kynthia breathing from over the room. That was because the man could have returned just like the child had worried.

Since then, it had been up to the boy to protect Kynthia’s night.  The days had become a full year.

Finally, when Kynthia recognized the boy as family and began to call him older brother, something changed. The boy learned to sense other people’s footsteps better than anyone else.

* * *

In the meantime, trivial things occurred.

When he said he didn’t know how to write because the training rules were written, the knight training the trainees threw him a book with a look of annoyance.

Since he couldn’t even read the text in the book, the boy had to go back with the book and find someone to tell him the text.

Meanwhile, a person who was in the same orphanage whom he only knew by face, smiled awkwardly and said he would let the boy know the writing.

This was because he needed a foundation to do business, so he desperately needed even the little money that the boy said he would give him. The boy stuttered, but he learned enough to read anyway.

One day, Kynthia came back from identifying the body of his father. According to the bar owner, drunk people quarreled and died while wielding bottles of alcohol. That much was not surprising in this alley.

Kynthia, who checked the corpse that had begun to decompose due to the hot weather, said that he was sure that ‘it’ was his biological father, but that he had lied to the owner, saying that it didn’t seem like it.

— If that was the case, I would have had to bring in the rotting pig and even hold a funeral.

The boy just stroked Kynthia’s head, who stuck out his tongue as if he disliked the thought, but said nothing.

Those days were worth living. The boy found out why the knight commander willingly accepted him without even asking his name or status. There was a need for at least one person who was like a sandbag— to receive the anger of the trainees.

He was bullied by the trainees, and wounds grew on his body, but this was not much different from when he lived in the orphanage. He didn’t even feel mentally distressed because he didn’t get any affection in the first place.

Compared to the people around him who were anxious from day to day because they were not appointed as knights, he was rather mentally relaxed. This was because the boy only held a sword since he had no other choice, and he did not have the mindset that he should be a knight.

Even though the boy knew better than anyone else, he sometimes felt like he was lying in a swamp. Was that really okay?

Dust on the wooden sword, which has not been wielded since the appearance of the real sword, had piled up, and the boy still had no name.

Kynthia said he would give him a name if he wanted, but he thought it would be better not to create it from the beginning if it was a name that would not be called. Yes, like a boy.

The world worked fine without him, and the boy still didn’t know why to live. It was clear that even if his heart stopped right away, there would be no regrets.

Why was the world moving so slowly? The boy hoped he could tie a knot in time. If he bound the void that came suddenly, he wondered if all this would be over at once.

The only thing that had grown for the boy was his body, he hadn’t grown a single inch on the inside.

His vision turned white. In a perfect world, the boy wasn’t even a foreign body. He wished he hadn’t been born. Today, he was drifting without even holding back any regrets.

Change started as a very small thing. Kynthia, for instance, brought someone into the house.

Since it was Kynthia’s house in the first place, he wouldn’t normally have paid much attention to anyone, but today was different. This was because those who appeared to be knights of noble families ran around the alley in a commotion.

There was not a single good thing about being involved with aristocrats.

For them, poor commoners were just convenient tools to use and were treated as less than livestock.  They were not the only ones who were blinded by the short-lived glory of wealth and fame, and then disappeared without a sound after taking on the work they were asked to do.

When he entered the house, he could see a few footprints that were not the size of Kynthia’s in the dust left on the floor.

“Who is it?”

“Yes?”

“Who did you bring home?”

“What do you mean bring someone~. Oh my, in this dusty corner of the house…”

Kynthia’s was better at lying than anyone else, but the boy was a bad match-up. The boy’s sharp senses indicated that there was a person in the closet.

After sighing, he opened the closet without hesitation. As expected, a woman with black hair was looking up at the boy with a surprised face.

“Come out.”

“Brother!”

He had already been going through a terribly tiring day.  He didn’t want to fight to get the woman out. He didn’t know if she knew the boy’s heart, but the woman didn’t hold out anymore and came out kicking her tongue.

There was nothing good the longer it took. The boy reached out his palm to return something Cynthia would have received.

When the child put the earring in his palm with a loud mouth, the boy returned it to the woman. Kynthia was grumbling, but this time he couldn’t let it slide.

(PR/N: ‘loud mouth’ as in ‘complaining’.)

The woman, who was staring at the earring that returned to her hand, threw it by his face silently. When he instinctively grabbed her earrings, the woman said calmly.

“It’s going to be hard not to get it. Those earrings include a price for silence.”

……That was the way aristocrats were. Even though she saw the boy’s face distorted by embarrassment and irritation, the woman continued to talk.

It was a one-sided request to be recommended as a reliable information guild. Holding Kynthia’s hand, the boy sighed.

“Sigh, lady…….”

“If you hear my family’s name, you’ll have no choice but to listen to my request.”

That was right. The more he knew about the woman’s personal information, the more dangerous it was. Whatever it was, it was clear that if discovered, it would become something troublesome.

“Then let’s just call you ‘lady’. Lady, I apologize for being bothered by a child who doesn’t know anything, but we can’t afford to bring you anything no matter what the lady wants. Please pity us who are poor and incompetent and leave this house.”

The boy bowed his head deeply, but the woman brazenly sat on Kynthia’s bed and crossed her legs. Then she spoke in a gentle voice.

“If I go out now, my family will think you kidnapped me. Then, even those little children will be taken away and punished. Do you really want that?”

“…….”

“If you guys meet my request instead, I can create the opposite situation. I almost got into a rough time, but you guys saved me. What would you do?”

It was absurd to hear that she was showing mercy with all the exits blocked. As if she had prepared beforehand, the woman who had been recounting the requirements tilted her head slightly as if she felt the boy’s gaze.

“You look dissatisfied.”

“Did you come here on purpose?”

“No way. Do I look like I don’t have enough to see that I had to find you who I don’t even know? I was really being chased.”

“The nobles do not give orders to the person they met for the first time today to search for people through the intelligence guild. They might disclose it to others.”

At the boy’s words, the woman got up and leaned closer to him. Because I can kill you in half a day if I wanted to. The woman whispered in a sad voice.

At that moment, the woman gently stroked Kynthia’s head, who was beginning to tremble as if he had judged the situation, and smiled.

He was angry, but there was no other way. The woman in front of him was different from Kynthia’s father, who knew how to punch ignorantly.

In order to protect Kynthia from that woman, he had to listen to whatever she asked for.

Knowing that she had won, the woman made a shameless request to take her home.

The boy was forced to take off his shoes. That was because the woman was barefoot, where did she leave her shoes? As he said, these were all the shoes the boy had.

However it was clear that wherever she lived, it was far from this house, but as he had a little more calluses on his feet, he thought it was more reasonable for him to walk barefoot.

As he expected, the woman’s house was quite a long way. Strangely enough, however, the woman never complained of any common pain in her legs or feet, like a person familiar with walking a long distance. No, rather, she sighed when a well-lit mansion appeared, as if she wanted this road to never end.

It was strange, and the boy appeared to have looked around the mansion once before returning home. He didn’t think they would be able to meet again.
