Side Story 3: His Name (III)
Bullying had always been around, but it had been severe for the past few days. It was only after hearing the warnings regarding the ceremony at the group meeting that the boy remembered that the ceremony was about to take place. All of the trainee knights were extremely sensitive at this period.
Regardless of the trainee’s ability or effort, whether they would become a knight or not was decided purely by the choice of aristocrats.
This was because the trainee who was not chosen would vaguely wait for the next appointment ceremony, and he would be deprived even of the trainee position later when he was old.
Poor nobles used to become mercenaries or be sold as son-in-laws to commoner rich families if they were not appointed as knights.
The boy was honestly speechless whenever he heard anyone use the expression ‘falling in the mud’ to describe the life that everyone in the back alleys would have hoped for, but as if captivated by the guiro, he said that it couldn’t be helped because the starting point of birth was different.
(QC/N: ‘귀로’ guiro – a musical instrument with a serrated surface which gives a rasping sound when scraped with a stick, originally made from a gourd and used in Latin American music.)
However, the nobility without money had hearts as thin as their wallets, so it seemed that they could not stand the anxiety unless they beat others.
Beating the boy did not reduce the number of competitors. Among the many trainees, the boy couldn’t even become a competitor from the beginning. Therefore… Their violence was just an excuse for anger.
It would have been better if they gave up like the boy, but maybe everyone hung up on the slightest possibility. He stroked Kynthia’s head, who was jumping up and down, asking why he allowed himself to be beaten like a fool, gaining multiple wounds, and laid down his bruised body on the bed.
From the day he was able to feel the flow well, he was able to put it on the sword, albeit clumsily. It didn’t last very long, but anyway, it was proof that he was close to Sword Master, so if he showed it, his chances of being appointed as a knight might increase.
But he didn’t want to do that.
Even if someone would laugh at him if they heard it, the boy wanted to be recognized as a knight, not as ‘one who showed the qualities of a sword master’, but for the swordsmanship he had been striving for.
Of course, it couldn’t be denied that his enlightened ability was also part of his swordsmanship.….
Because he was afraid that he would be disappointed If he couldn’t become a Master. The boy thought he better not even be chosen if he was going to be abandoned in the middle.
So when he was caught being beaten up in a bag, he was not angry or upset even though the woman pretended not to know him. It was not something to be solved now by stopping violence for a while. Rather, even more retaliation might return out of jealousy.
When the bell rang to announce that the brief break was over, the men spit and disappeared.
The boy shook his body familiarly and got up with a limp. Whoever was selected for the appointment ceremony had nothing to do with the boy. Because he wasn’t always confident in being chosen.
The boy stood in the corner and shady place that no one wanted. Since there were only a few opportunities left to be appointed, the knights around him were praying to be selected with a desperate gaze.
Watching the people being called one by one, he looked at the person in front of him without hesitation. The boy’s eyelids fluttered.
To emphasise, every change starts with the smallest thing. From what was trivial and desperate like the flapping of a butterfly’s wings that passed away unintentionally.
“I will appoint that knight.”
On the distant podium. The one who pointed at him was closer to the sky, and the boy was in a place where it was hard to see who it was.Everyone around him was startled with their mouths open and turned to look at him.
On the frozen ground, the woman who had passed him before was waiting under the shade with a sword in her hand. The boy, facing her majestic green eyes, fell on his knees as if possessed.
“Will you swear loyalty and obedience to Lady Eris Misérian in front of God?”
“Even if the road is a series of hardships and adversity, I will gladly follow it. No temptation will be able to subdue me.”
The cold sword landed on his head and shoulders. So the boy…..He had never imagined that something like this would happen to him. So he didn’t even know what kind of expression to make or what to say at that time.
Because even the boy’s parents did not choose him.
“What is the sir’s name?”
“I’m ashamed, but I don’t have a name.”
“I was called ‘brother’ or ‘older brother’* because none of the children in the alley were older than me.”
(QC/N: * originally ‘hyung’ and ‘oppa’.)
— Do you want someone to get you out of here someday? Such miracles don’t happen to ordinary people like us.
The echo of that day resonated in his ear. He didn’t even expect it because he didn’t want to be disappointed.
But every time he hid his presence, he actually wanted someone to find him. It was closer to a miracle for a boy to hear ‘You were here, I found you after a long time.’
A cool, soft hand rested on the boy’s head. A soft voice spoke of miracles casually.
“Then I’ll call you Anakin, Anakin.”
The boy’s eyes turned white. Then he realised. The world sometimes turned white even if it was not sad. Under the scattered sunlight, the boy became Anakin from that day on.
There was no one to greet, so Anakin headed in front of the carriage of the Misérian family after a simple procedure.

The knight standing next to him chatted, saying, ‘It is an honour to serve a beautiful person like Lady Misérian.’
“Since you have been chosen by the benevolent Lady Misérian, it shows that you are qualified so you should be careful not to disgrace her.”
There was no sympathy in the eyes that chose him to say that she had shown mercy to him. However, if it was not sympathy, what was the reason to choose him? Anakin needed confidence.
When only the two, him and the owner, were left in the carriage, Anakin hesitated and spoke up. He was prepared to be scolded for a presumptuous question, but surprisingly, she casually told him why she chose him.
“To die for me.”
When the owner calmly demanded his death, Anakin was rather relieved. That she was saving someone who would die in her stead was much easier to understand than an absurd reason. At least he thought he wouldn’t go back to a life of doing nothing.
Some might think Anakin’s way of thinking was bizarre, but it didn’t matter what others thought from the beginning. What Anakin served was not an unspecified majority, because she was the only person who discovered and chose him.
When the master whispered his name, he instinctively jumped out and opened the door. It was only after he opened the door and saw the surprised owner’s face that he realised that he made a mistake.
He forgot that ordinary people couldn’t hear the whisper.
He asked for permission because he thought it would be better to go in and talk. After reassuring him that she won’t reveal anything, the master asked.
“You… were you a Sword Master?”
He wished he could say he was a Sword Master confidently, but unfortunately, he was not a sword master.
Anakin had no talent for lying, and it would be absurd to lie to his master. So he just spoke frankly.
“I can feel the presence, but the expression of the sword is incomplete. That’s not… It’s not a Sword Master.”
Anakin was afraid that his master would be disappointed, but she calmly wrapped up his half-master achievement.
So Anakin also gained a little courage. Pretend you didn’t hear anything. Pretend you didn’t know…… Courage to ask her to help with his work.
“Are you not from this place?”
“Yes. To be exact, this is not ‘Eris’, but ‘I’ am not from here.”
“Do you want to go back to where you lived?”
“…Yes.”
“Should I help you with that?”
When he answered calmly, his master now began to doubt him. It was understandable. Not long ago, their relationship was so awkward that threats came and went.
She chose a boy who was born and had never been chosen by anyone and gave him a name that she did not need to call him. She didn’t know what it meant to Anakin. In fact, there was no need to know in the future.
“It doesn’t really matter to me who the master is. Because my job doesn’t change.”
“What’s your job?”
“You order, I obey.”
This was because his master had no reason or responsibility for his pathetic and heavy life.
Anakin just had to do what his master wanted and die instead of her as she said.
If he repaid the grace for choosing him, that was all. It was a presumptuous idea to go beyond that.
Anakin quietly left the room. He no longer drifted vaguely. He had something to do too.
It seemed that he laughed a little because he was happy.
There were little things. Days when he faithfully carried out the work his master ordered.
Anakin was doing much better than he had worried.
Since his master chose him, he had not rested for a moment. While travelling to and from the Imperial Palace, he would go to the library whenever he had time to read and study something.
And sometimes Anakin was always clearly told what to do for her. He didn’t have to worry or guess, as long as he didn’t disclose his master’s orders or make a mistake.
It was something else that actually made him a fool. His master seemed to be trying not to show it, but she often suffered and cried sometimes.
Anakin was very emotionally clumsy, so he didn’t know what to do whenever she struggled. When she was having a hard time, all he did was hide himself in the shadows and catch his breath.
He wanted to do something else rather than comfort. He tried to attract her attention when she was in pain and to give her joy when she was sad.
At best, breaking down doors, telling stories, revealing constellations….. Even if it was only very trivial things. He just wanted her to get away from her pain, at least a little bit.
