Side Story 6: His Master From Another World (III)

Anakin put her in the carriage and knelt down. Looking up at his master from this position, he could see a dark shade under her eyelashes.

“If you want, I’ll make one more oath now. Even if the day comes when I hate you…… I will follow you without letting you go.”

If this promise could be any comfort to her.

A smile slowly spread on his master’s face. So even Anakin smiled.

“You’re out of your mind, aren’t you?”

“Are you disappointed?”

“No… It’s very…… I really like it.”

On his way back, Anakin reflected on the eyes of the two men who were wary of him. Familiar faces soaked in betrayal, as if they had lost their possession.

It was funny. Similar to the grumpiness of a child when someone asked for a doll he wasn’t interested in, but he suddenly hugged it in his arms as if it were invaluable, it was just that kind of feeling..

He could clearly see what dirty delusions they would have about his master and him. It didn’t really matter to them. What relationship there was between him and his master. Because they just needed a name to blame.

From time to time, romance novels between a knight and his lady seemed to be popular, but they could only be enjoyed because they were novels. In reality, it was clear that they would have been offended or ridiculed for not knowing their place, even if the two really loved each other.

People would say that Lady Miserian couldn’t help it, or they would laugh at her recklessly, saying that she was deceived because she was stupid.

He didn’t want his master to suffer such a disgrace because of his lowly self. Even if he couldn’t be a lamp that lights up the road, he didn’t want to hold onto her ankle.

It was the day when his master was ill. He went to the kitchen at his master’s order, got some medicine, and knocked on the door. When he turned the doorknob, there was only a rattling sound, but it didn’t open.

He thought she didn’t want to be disturbed, but he still asked the chef for the key because she had to take medicine and sleep.

When Anakin opened the door and entered, his master opened her mouth slightly in surprise. Her eyes were out of focus, so he left what he had brought on the table next to the bed and waved. He could see her focus slowly returning.

“Master, are you up? I brought medicine.”

“How did you open the door?”

“I was worried…… I asked the chef for the key. Can you sit?”

Supporting his master who raised her body, Anakin put the medicine bottle he had placed next to her mouth. It was only after taking all the medicine and water as directed and drinking it that her pale complexion turned red. When he wiped off her cold sweat with a cold towel, his master asked.

“Do you like me?”

He liked her. He liked her as his master, as just a person. He tried to answer right away, but his master was faster.

“Don’t say it.”

“…But.”

“I told you not to!”

His master’s palm touched his lips. Why?  What made her so anxious? It would be nice if it could be cut down as simple as a door.

Anakin pulled his owner’s hand and moved it to his cheek. It was an unspoken expression that he wouldn’t say anything even if he didn’t stop her.

Their eyes met. Her lips were chapped. Her fingertips moved a few more times, as if petting a dog, before the order fell. Anakin’s master came out of his arms and covered herself with the blanket..

Looking at her back, he had a certain intuition. He felt like he shouldn’t leave her alone, just as he insisted on taking her to Kynthia’s house that day.

He moved his feet to clean up the dishes and come back, but his master turned around in a hurry. She was going to open her eyes to check if her fever was rising..

“Are you in so much pain…… that you can’t sleep?”

“Yes.”

When he was in the orphanage, he was sick and sad. That was because no one was by his side since he was quarantined in case he transferred the disease. So he was bothered when someone looked sick or was struggling.

“Do you want me to stay with you?”

“…Yes.”

Even if it didn’t help anything, he hoped she would feel a little relieved. Even if she, his master, was in unbearable pain, she could always call a doctor, and he could hold her hand so she didn’t have to endure it alone…… It worked.

Anakin grabbed his master’s fingertips and suddenly began to doubt. Was it true that this devotion stemmed from pure goodwill?

He was afraid that his loyalty seemed to be mixed with other colours. Even though he despised men who treated their masters carelessly more than anyone else, he feared that maybe he would become a person like that too.

Ah, Anakin didn’t want to betray his master no matter what happened.

While looking down at his master who barely fell asleep, he covered his face with empty hands. He didn’t want to take his hand out. So it was more of a problem.

On the day he had to attend the debutante ball as her partner, Anakin was also called out early in the morning and had to dress up.

After washing thoroughly, he was dragged out by the maids as soon as he wore a uniform. The maids gave Anakin a powder coat, patted his hair, and sighed deeply.

“It’s not that the knight is ugly……. Compared to His Highness the Crown Prince, his impression is blurry.”

“Would it be better if I put on heavy makeup like I did for the young lady?”

“Ahh. That suits her because she’s a girl, but he’ll look like a clown.”

Anyway, the maids did their best.

Because his master praised him for being wonderful. They arranged his hair and let about half of it flow down, which they said was a trend.

Actually, it was his first time attending a party. It would have been more appropriate for the escort to wait nearby than to “attend” the party.

Unlike usual, Anakin was very nervous because he had to stand side by side with his master.

Disappointingly, compared with her other partners, there was no exceptionally handsome side of him..

Wasn’t his existence insulting his master? Anakin quietly bit the flesh in his mouth.

Everywhere he turned his eyes, it was dazzling differently. Under the colourful lights, Anakin recalled himself as a child looking out of the window in the orphanage.

In the back alley where he was born and raised, he only vaguely thought that the so-called ‘noblemen’ would eat well and live well, but never imagined that it would be this much.

It was a sad thing. People in the back alley also had limitations in thinking. Had it not been for his master, Anakin would not even have had the chance to stand in such a place in his life.

On the other side of Anakin’s heart, still lived a shadowed boy. The boy crouched awkwardly, asking if it was really okay to stay there, he asked Anakin over and over again. And Anakin didn’t dare answer that question.

When the music began, people gathered in pairs one by one. Anakin carefully touched his master’s body. He sighed as if the practice was worthwhile and he felt like he was dancing like the other people around him.

Dancing to the beat, Anakin suddenly felt like being in a dream at this moment.

So he was scared. When he woke up from this sweet dream, he feared that he would return to being a boy with no name. At that time, he would meet his master and be chosen…  There was no way that miracle would ever happen again.

Then Anakin suddenly realised. He wasn’t afraid of being stuck in the mud again. He was afraid of the possibility of not being able to serve this person in front of him.

His owner was not good because she chose him. At the appointment ceremony, it would have been meaningless to be chosen by anyone if it was not her.

Anakin raised his head upright.

He couldn’t be intimidated. Because he couldn’t doubt his master’s choice.

She had chosen him, she was the one he served, and there was only one person to evaluate him. Others were just strangers, so it didn’t matter what they called Anakin.

Then his master called Anakin. She raised her head slightly and whispered to him.

“Allow me to kiss you.”

It was clearly different from the situation in the train, in which they had to pretend to kiss to avoid being chased.

Rather, he could be in trouble.

In the meantime, his master had been criticised by countless people because of the scandal with him. Kissing was an act of nailing the scandal. There was no way his master didn’t know that.

So……avoiding contact with him now as a means of getting out of trouble, wasn’t what she wanted..

Anakin looked down at his master. On the day she set the boat on the lake, she affirmed that she would not love him.

Therefore, he should not mistake his master’s request. He had to think that there must be another meaning he didn’t notice.

But she gave Anakin a choice and he tactfully chose not to read all the truth.

He had rarely chosen anything.

This was because he had never had enough to choose something.

One day, this choice could have brought a day of regret. Furthermore, it was the first impulsive and emotional choice he made in his life, so he might blame himself for not doing so belatedly.

Anakin closed his eyes to all the possibilities. Her breath became as close as it once was. What was different from then was that it was his heart, not the train, that rattled.

Her slightly cold hands wrapped around both his cheeks, and he could feel the touch of her rough lips, perhaps because she often bit them. Beyond the sweet breathing, a little hot and soft thing penetrated his mouth.

Anakin’s tightly clenched fist turned white. His palms were suddenly damp due to tension and excitement.

Even if this kiss didn’t mean anything to her, it was a lot to him.

It was his first kiss
