Side Story 13: The World After ‘The End’ (II)

An old maniac was roaming the streets. Contrary to his white hair, the dark, wrinkled-skinned man constantly muttered something of his own.

Perhaps it was because of the man’s shabby behaviour that people avoided him as if they were seeing something filthy. And a young person ran from afar and came to support the man.

“Priest! When did you leave again? I’ve told you several times that you need to rest well now.….”

“You have to go, you have to find a way…. It’s dangerous, so let’s go back to the temple.”

(QC/N: the first sentence is likely the priest’s words, the young man is just repeating it.)

When the young person pulled the man, the man put strength into his body to not go.

When the man was stubborn and did not move easily, the young person screamed as if he was annoyed.

“It’s impossible to cross worlds. Don’t you know better than anyone else?”

At the young person’s words, Hubris looked blankly into his eyes and shook his head. Something was wrong… There was a way, but he just didn’t know….….

The young person scrunched his face with regret at the stuttering words of Hubris.

The man in front of him was the youngest high priest. Not long ago, he even took the place of the ill high priest at the coronation ceremony of the new emperor.

The beautiful high priest who was praised by everyone lost his power in an instant and became an old man.

As soon as Hubris barely opened his eyes, he ran down the street screaming for Lady Misérian and rummaged through the archive like a madman.

He didn’t know what kind of relationship the high priest had with Lady Misérian, who he was looking for, but knowing the character of Hubris, the young man felt more sorry than reluctant to see him.

“Calm down, priest. Lady Misérian is not a stranger and is already dead.”

At the young man’s words, Hubris’ mouth twitched a few times, then he shut it tight. As if his whole body had lost strength, he leaned over and surrendered to the young man. Even while he was blankly returning to the temple, Hubris muttered the name of ‘Eris Misérian’ over and over again.

Even now, Hubris couldn’t believe the stranger’s death. It was as if she was alive somewhere. She was alive, but she was the only thing he couldn’t find.

Perhaps because of the great shock, he had lost his memories of the night he went to save the stranger.  Her knight was burning her body and her witch appeared. And…

Oh, yes. The witch. Hubris had never seen such a scary thing in his life.

If it had been black, he wouldn’t have been so afraid. But the witch’s soul was the abyss itself. As she came closer, he seemed to be deprived of all light and colour.

She had a bored face as she played with the two struggling men with one single gesture.  Finally she clapped twice.

He first lost his sight, then the sense of smell, and finally his hearing and touch. He didn’t know how much time had passed in that state. However, Hubris and Jason seemed to go crazy, so they licked the floor and bit their hands, swallowing their own blood, trying to catch the only taste they could feel.

When he came to his senses, Hubris realised that his hands were terribly wrinkled. It was the result of a sudden consumption of too much divine power. He broke his vessel, but his lifespan remained the same, however he had to spend the rest of his life without his youth.

He could no longer be a priest because of his lack of divinity, but the temple allowed him to spend the rest of his life in the temple, considering his contributions so far.

It was their own mercy, but it was more considerate than nothing for Hubris.

Entering that room, he remembered the room he had been living in since he was born. It wasn’t just reminiscent. In his darkened room, his mother’s corpse greeted him vividly.

When he couldn’t stand the scene and ran out into the street, the people in the temple grabbed him and pushed him back into the room.

When he closed his eyes to avoid his mother, he remembered the green eyes glistening in the morning sun. Even if he poured his whole life into it, he wouldn’t be able to look into her eyes again.

Hubris, who could not save anything or even himself, was slowly buried in darkness.

And there was actually a man who failed to hang himself. Jason struggled for an hour with his throat strangled, but eventually couldn’t die and cut off the rope with a dagger in his arms.

It wasn’t just strangulation. Even if he cut off his wrist or stabbed himself in the stomach, he did not die. No, actually, he couldn’t even hurt himself. His skin wasn’t even made of steel.

He went to the temple, but those who were not high priests did not even know exactly what kind of curse it was.

Jason was terrified. Because the last one he had to meet was none other than the witch.

On the day he went to save Lady Misérian, Jason had to endure a humiliation that he had never suffered from even the supreme being, the dragon.

It must have been that the witch had cast some venomous curse at that time. To break the curse, Jason had to find that witch.

The only clue he had was that the witch introduced herself as ‘the last witch left in the empire’.

He was a swordmaster who could read signs, so it might take some time, but if he searched through the Empire, he was more likely to find it.

However, despite Jason’s determination, the witch appeared in a quite unexpected place. Unfortunately, the witch was running a store in the middle of the capital because it was said that the beacon did not shine on its own base.

Jason knocked on the door of the store where the lights were turned off. Obviously, the witch was pretending not to hear it even though he could feel a presence inside.

Finally, when Jason pulled out the sword to break the door, the witch opened the door and came out.

“Anyway, everyone is ignorantly trying to use their strength first. Why did I come here?”

“Let’s go in and talk.”

“Why do you want to come in? Just talk here. I don’t think it’s going to be an important story anyway.”

He thought the witch was shameless, but Jason held back. This was because he knew that it was a loss to argue.

After taking a deep breath, he calmly demanded from the witch.

“…That’s okay. Release the curse you put on me.”

“…Oh, ahaha, ahahaha!”

When the witch bent her back and laughed, Jason opened his mouth in embarrassment. The witch, who had been smiling for a long time, said, wiping away tears.

“I really don’t know what humans think. Are you making the mistake of thinking that there is something to gain if I curse you? I’ve only seen you twice, counting today.”

“Don’t lie to me. I’ve been feeling weird since I met you!”

“I’m telling you because you made me laugh……. That’s not my curse. It’s the curse of the dragons.”

Jason’s face turned pale at the witch’s words. Dragon? Did this witch say dragon? The witch spoke to Jason with a mocking look.

“The dragons are..…. They are not creatures that are born and die so easily, so they care about each other terribly. They don’t even think about the person’s will, they just want to survive.”

The witch, who shook her head as if she were disgusted, made a sympathetic smile.

“And when someone kills their own kind, they hold them accountable in the cruellest way they know.”

One day, he didn’t get sick.

Not only did he not get hurt, but he was also fine overnight. It wasn’t just because he became strong.

Finally, the witch sentenced him to death in a clear voice.

“Is there another punishment in the world than to endure a dragon’s life with a human’s body?”

Ah. Jason covered his mouth and screamed silently. When he faltered back, the witch spoke coldly.

“If you understand, then go away.”

Before he knew it, she let a woman inside by Jason’s side and closed the store.

The eerie truth penetrated Jason, who was left alone.

Jason devoted almost his entire life to killing the dragon. Therefore, he found it more impossible than anyone else.

Please help me.

The meaningless timeline that no one needed extended without knowing the end.

Please remember me.

Jason would be forever erased. Even his legend would wear over time, turning into the story of an unknown man.

He would no longer love anything.

Because he would have to lose everything.

The last person to see Jason was none other than Alecto. He asked Alecto. Are you happy? When Alecto didn’t answer, Jason raised his lips with a distorted face and said,

“You don’t know what you’ve lost. How dazzling it was.”

Alecto knew that. He just didn’t want to confirm it by saying it out loud.

At Alecto’s silence, Jason paused for a moment. Then soon he shook his head and left.

No one knew what happened to the warrior after that. This was because everyone forgot Jason so easily. Just as no one looked for an object that was no longer needed.
