Amegakure, the Village Hidden by Rain, mourned the death of one of its leaders. The whole country was in shock since the civil war suddenly ended in a massacre. The leader, Hanzo of the Salamander, the one who single-handedly held the three legendary Sannins in check and gave them their title, had been assassinated. He, his family, his friends, all his relatives, everything down to his name had been permanently erased, and anyone who had a problem with it suffered the same fate.

“A God has appeared. I made your dream come true, Yahiko.”

From the tallest tower in the village, his messy red hair blowing in the wind and his spiraling eyes gazing up at the sky, the self-proclaimed god seemed lost in a universe of his own.

"What are you going to do now, Pain?" A blue-haired young woman, Konan, asked.

Two individuals suddenly materialized to Pain’s right.

“Ah, Madara,” Pain said, staring at the masked man. “Who is with you?” He added without even turning around.

“A man named Orochimaru.”

“Orochimaru, one of Konoha's legendary Sannin... I see.”

Pain closed his eyes; his expression remained impassive.

"Do you want me to kill him?" He asked, in a neutral tone as if he were asking for the weather forecast for the next day, which by the way, was relatively predictable in these regions.

Orochimaru sneered.

“Kill me? You seem very sure of yourself.”

Pain finally turned toward them.

Orochimaru was speechless, unable to utter a single word.

"That pupil...those concentric circles...there's no doubt..."

"Well, let's stop this bickering," Tobi, the masked man, interjected. “Pain, Orochimaru can be useful to us. He seems to possess some resources and obviously has no qualms about methods to achieve his goals.”

Tobi's Sharingan then stared at Orochimaru with a fiery gaze.

"Although I don't like some of his goals," he added.

Orochimaru licked his lips.

“So what?” Konan blurted. “We don't need this guy. Pain is enough on his own. Let's kill him; he already knows too much about us.”

“His knowledge can be useful to us. He knows a lot about Konoha.”

“As a founder, you should know Konoha better than I do, Madara…or should I say Tobi.”

Another individual appeared through the nearby wall; it was Zetsu.

"Who is he kidding?” White Zetsu sneered.

"How arrogant... " Black Zetsu added.

Pain sat down and stared at Orochimaru for a moment.

Now that the Sannin had recovered from the shock of seeing that particular pupil, the stranger, as well as the woman, seemed familiar to him.

"It's fine," Pain said. “Orochimaru, from this day on, you will serve the Akatsuki.”

Orochimaru laughed.

“What if I refuse?”

"Then you die by my hands."

Orochimaru stopped laughing but kept a mocking smile.

“Very well; we can now focus on our real objective…” Tobi concluded.

In the Konoha hospital, Kushina had just woken up alongside Minato.

“Minato, I am sorry! I'm so weak; I have a great power in me, but I won’t be able to protect Naruto with it. And without it, I'm worth nothing…”

“That’s not true, you're very strong.”

“Not as strong as you…”

“You taught me everything. You made me the man I am today.”

“He could have won…”

“Kushina, you fought Orochimaru, a Sannin!”

“So what?!” Kushina suddenly got angry, tears in her eyes. “You would have taken care of him in a heartbeat.”

Minato remained silent and hugged his wife.

“I'm sorry Minato; I'm only a jinchuriki.”

“Please don’t say that,” Minato replied, grabbing her by the shoulders and looking her in the eyes. “You are much more than that. You are Kushina Uzumaki! My wife! Naruto’s mother!”

Kushina looked him in the eyes, hypnotized by his loving gaze. She stood up without a word.

"Kushina, you shouldn't…”

But she didn't seem to be listening to him, too stubborn to follow the doctors' orders. After a few painful movements, she was on her feet. Kushina took Minato's hands in hers and rested her head on his chest before beginning to perform a few dance steps. Minato tried somehow to follow, not questioning her behavior.

“We’ve never danced together before,” Kushina whispered. “That was the reason why I wanted to go to the party so much... So we could dance a little, ya know.”

Her voice was soft, like a melody punctuating the dance steps of the two young lovers.
Minato was not very comfortable. His steps were clumsy. One could tell he hadn’t done this before.

“You're the greatest Hokage of all time, and you can’t even dance properly.”

Minato smiled embarrassedly.

“So you’re making fun of me…”

The Hokage’s smile changed.

“I'm going to show you a dance you'll never forget, Kushina.”

And, without warning, they vanished. They reappeared in the middle of a large square in Konoha, near a huge tree. Minato twirled Kushina, whose long red hair waved in a brisk rhythm. The passers-by all jumped, frightened. But the couple had already disappeared.

They reappeared on the statue of the Yondaime Hokage, on top of a peak representing a lock of Minato's hair. The latter dragged Kushina into a rapid fall that made her scream. But they vanished in midair.

They reappeared in the forest, dancing to the rhythm of the birds. Then near a river, from which they heard the water flowing. Then in a large canyon. Then in the depths of a cave. Then up a mountain…

In the space of a few seconds, they saw a multitude of landscapes. Kushina was amazed. However, Minato was already leading her back to Konoha where he whirled her into a shop, the same one Kakashi had bought his flowers from. The Yondaime took a red rose while sending a coin to the owner. They disappeared again before reappearing in a place that Kushina took some time to recognize.

“Aaah! I’m getting dizzy, ya know.”

She heard a baby crying and knew she was home. She then distinctly saw Minato put one knee on the ground and handed her the rose. Kushina smiled before fainting. Minato rushed forward and caught her body before it hit the floor.

“Not bad, you are indeed my disciple,” An individual said.

Minato smiled as he recognized the man.

“Thank you for coming back to take care of Naruto, Jiraiya-sensei.”

“Oh, you know, I was originally following an old friend…” Jiraiya blurted out, scratching his head.

“But since I lost him, I couldn't help going to see my godson! He’s got quite a character if you ask me…”

Minato regained his seriousness.

“Don't you have an idea of Orochimaru's location?” He asked.

“Not the slightest... It's as if he had vanished.”

“That's exactly what the Hyugas told me while searching the surroundings.”

“Besides, why didn't you go to your wife directly? The Sandaime told me that you were running with the others. Didn't you put a seal on Kushina?”

“I thought it was a trap. According to Hiashi, large amounts of chakra surrounded the scene. I guess I was being overly cautious.”

“Hmm...I see,” Jiraiya replied, frowning. “The old man also told me about Fugaku. It seems that he had a role to play. But he wasn’t very talkative. What happened?”

Minato lowered his head.

“He was the only one there when everybody arrived. Moreover, he admitted to having killed Hizashi.”

Minato looked at Jiraiya with sadness.

“He's going to be judged.”

Jiraiya sighed.

“How is Mikoto? And Hiashi?”

“Mikoto is still unconscious but not in danger. As for Hiashi, he hasn’t come out of his house since…”

“I see. I'll go talk to him.” The Sannin said.

Orochimaru was currently in the Akatsuki lair, facing a gigantic statue.

"So that’s the Gedo Mazo," Orochimaru muttered, licking his lips.

Tobi stared at him intently.

“Your knowledge has no limit. I need you to solve a problem for me.”

Tobi sat down in front of the statue.

“When I tried to extract Kyubi from Kushina, a mysterious force blocked it. I want to know what it is. I don't want this to happen again in the future.”

“Perhaps you should start by learning a little about these things,” Orochimaru said ironically. “The force that blocked you may just be your own weakness.”

“I had a good teacher. I knew what I was doing.”

“Apparently not… Otherwise, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.” Orochimaru intervened, a mocking smile on his lips.

Tobi ignored him.

"I want to know what it is," he repeated. “If you help me, I will give you countless Uchiha bodies.

Orochimaru was delighted by the offer.

“One last thing… Quit making that face. It’s disgusting.” White Zetsu, who had appeared beside Tobi, added.
