"There you are!" Melodious exclaimed when she saw me enter the room. "I was beginning to wonder if you had gotten lost."
"No, I just needed a minute to get used to everything," I said truthfully. It was all still so surreal to me.
Melodious nodded understandingly. "I know it's a lot to take in," she said. "But you'll get used to it eventually."
She led me over to the table and gestured for me to sit down. Then she sat down across from me and began piling food onto my plate.
"You need to eat more if you're going to train properly," she told me as she added yet another piece of meat onto my plate.
Fiona brought us both glasses of juice and then retreated back into the shadows again.
I didn't know what it was, but there was something about Fiona that made her seem almost otherworldly herself. Maybe it was her mannerisms or the way she always seemed to be lurking around in the background, but whatever it was, it made her stand out in my mind.
"So tell me about this castle," I said after swallowing a bite of food. "Is it really your home?"
Melodious nodded proudly. "Yes, it is," she said. "It has been passed down through my family for generations."
"And what exactly is your family?" I asked curiously, not sure what kind of creatures Melodious belonged to. She definitely wasn't human like Fiona appeared to be, but beyond that I couldn't say for sure what she was.
Melodious grinned at me mischievously before taking a sip of her drink. "That's for me to know and for you to find out," she teased before setting down her glass and leaning forward on the table towards me conspiratorially. "But I will give you a hint..."
I leaned in eagerly, hanging on her every word as she continued speaking in a low voice meant only for my ears alone.. "We are holders of special seals that we contract to those that we chose."
I frowned in confusion, not sure what she meant by that. Seals? What did that have to do with anything? I was about to ask her to explain further when Fiona reappeared at the table with a fresh pot of coffee.
"Excuse me, Milady," she said as she began to pour Melodious a cup. "But there is someone here to see you."
Melodious sighed and sat back in her chair with an irritated expression on her face. "Who is it this time?" she asked.
Fiona hesitated for a moment before answering, and I could sense that she was reluctant to give up the information. "It is Lord Lachlan," she said finally after shooting me a warning look not to say anything.
Lord Lachlan? Who was that? And why did Fiona seem so nervous about him coming here? These were just some of the questions swirling around in my head as I watched Melodious stand up from the table and walk towards the door leading out into the hallway beyond without even looking back at me or saying a word.
My heart sank as I watched her leave, wondering if I had done something wrong or if maybe she was regretting taking me on as her trainee already. But before I could dwell on it for too long, Fiona reappeared at my side and gestured for me to follow her out of the room..
"Come with me," she instructed firmly while giving me another one of those looks that told me not to argue with her..
Not knowing what else to do, I stood up from my seat and followed Fiona out into the hallway where we turned and headed in the opposite direction from where Melodious had gone.
We walked quietly through the castle until we came to a stop outside of a large set of double doors made entirely out of some kind of dark wood that looked almost black in color.

Fiona motioned for me to step inside ahead of her which I did hesitantly, half expecting something bad to happen once I was through them. But nothing did. In fact, everything looked perfectly normal inside just like any other room in the castle except for one thing; there were no windows anywhere.
"What is this place?" I asked Fiona in confusion, turning to look at her for answers.
"This is the dungeon," she replied matter-of-factly while gesturing for me to take a seat on one of the chairs that had been placed around a small table in the middle of the room..
I frowned at her, not liking the sound of that. Did she really expect me to just sit here and wait like some kind of prisoner? And what exactly was I waiting for anyway?
Before I could ask any more questions, Fiona turned and walked back towards the door leading out into the hallway. "Someone will be down shortly," she said before disappearing through the doorway and pulling the doors closed behind her, leaving me alone in the darkness.
I sat there in silence for what felt like hours, though it was probably only minutes. I considered calling out to Fiona or trying to find my way back out on my own, but something told me that it would be best if I just waited here patiently like she had instructed me too. After all, Melodious had seemed pretty upset when Fiona had mentioned Lord Lachlan's name earlier. Maybe he was someone important that she didn't want to be disturbed by while she was training me..
I was so lost in thought that I jumped when I heard a key turning in the lock of the door leading into the room followed by the sound of footsteps approaching from across the room.
I tensed up instinctively, preparing myself for whatever was coming, but relaxed slightly when Fiona reappeared out of the darkness with another figure following close behind her.
"Fiona, I told you to wait for me before bringing him down here," the figure scolded Fiona in a males voice.
"I'm sorry, Master," Fiona replied contritely. "But he was getting antsy and I didn't want him to cause any trouble."
The figure sighed heavily in response before coming to a stop next to the table where I was sitting. “stand up," he instructed firmly.
I did as he said, rising to my feet so that I could get a better look at him. He was a tall man with broad shoulders and long, dark hair that fell down around his face in waves.. He had piercing blue eyes that seemed to pierce right through me and an air of authority about him that made it very clear that he was used to being in charge.
He was also wearing a long black cloak with the hood pulled up over his head, obscuring part of his face in shadows. But even with only part of his face visible, I could tell that he was handsome in a rugged sort of way..
"What's your name?" he asked abruptly, breaking into my thoughts.
"Um.. Azriel," I replied hesitantly, not sure why it felt so important for me to give him a name. Something about this man just put me on edge and made me not want to trust him..
"And how old are you?" he asked next without giving me any time to respond to his first question..
"Twenty five," I lied without hesitation. There was no way I was going to tell this stranger my real age if I could help it. That sounded like a much more appropriate age for someone who was training to be some kind of warrior than eighteen did..
Thankfully, Lord Lachlan seemed satisfied with my answer because he nodded his head slightly before moving away from the table and towards one of the walls lined with all sorts of weapons mounted on racks..
He ran his fingers lightly over the hilts of several knives before finally settling on one near the back and pulling it off of its rack before turning back around and tossing it towards me underhanded across the room.
I managed to catch it by reflex alone right before it would have hit me in the stomach, barely even having time to register what was happening until after it had already happened..
I looked down at the knife in confusion for a moment before slowly raising my gaze back up towards Lord Lachlan who was now leaning against the wall with his arms crossed lazily over his chest while watching me intently with an unreadable expression on his face.
