"Do you know how to use that?" Lord Lachlan asked casually, gesturing towards the knife still clutched in my hand.

I shook my head silently, feeling a little embarrassed that I had caught the knife in the first place if I didn't even know how to use it.

Lord Lachlan straightened away from the wall and began walking towards me slowly with a predatory grace that made him look more like a jungle cat than a human being.

"Let me show you," he said softly as he came to a stop directly in front of me, so close that I could feel the heat emanating from his body and see the flecks of gold in his blue eyes up close.

He reached out and placed one hand on top of mine that was still holding onto the knife before gently prying my fingers open one by one until he was able to take possession of it himself.

I tried not to shiver at his touch but failed miserably as a chill ran up my spine. There was something about Lord Lachlan that made me feel both excited and scared at the same time like he was some kind of wild animal that I wasn't sure whether I wanted to tame or run away from.

"Follow me. I told the Queen that I would test you today to see what kind of skills you have and how much training you might need before she can officially make you her Hunter."

Lord Lachlan led me out of the room and down a long hallway lined with doors on either side. I could hear voices coming from some of the rooms as we walked past, but Lord Lachlan never hesitated or slowed his pace, making it clear that he expected me to follow him without question.

Eventually, we came to a stop in front of a door at the very end of the hallway, and Lord Lachlan finally turned to face me.

"This is going to be a test of your reflexes, speed, and stamina," he explained shortly before reaching out and grabbing hold of my arm with one hand while he used his other hand to push open the door.

He all but dragged me into the room beyond before releasing me abruptly and taking several steps back away from me.

I looked around warily, trying to figure out what exactly was going on here. The room was empty except for a few pieces of furniture along the walls and a large window that took up almost an entire wall.

The only thing that looked even remotely out of place was a small black object sitting in the very center of the room on top of a small table.

I had no idea what it was or what it could be used for, but Lord Lachlan's next words told me everything I needed to know.

"That's a bomb," he said calmly, gesturing towards the object in question as if it were nothing more than an everyday household item. "Your goal is simple: disarm it before it goes off."

I stared at him in disbelief for a moment before quickly shaking my head. "I can't. I don't know how.."

Lord Lachlan's lips quirked up into a small smirk. "That's the whole point of this exercise, Azriel. You're not supposed to know how. This is to see if you can think on your feet and come up with a solution under pressure."

I swallowed hard, my heart pounding in my chest as I realized just how serious this situation was. If I didn't figure out how to disarm the bomb, it would go off and kill us both.

Lord Lachlan must have seen the fear in my eyes because his smirk softened into a small reassuring smile. "Don't worry, Azriel. I'll be right here with you the whole time."

Some of the tension left my body at his words, and I nodded my head mutely before taking a step closer to the table where the bomb was sitting.

I could see a digital timer counting down from sixty seconds on one side of it, and my mind immediately began racing as I tried to think of anything that could possibly stop it from going off.

"Hurry up," Lord Lachlan prompted after only a few seconds had passed, his voice laced with impatience. "You don't have much time."

I ignored him, knowing that if I let myself get distracted, then there was no way I would be able to figure this out in time. It was already hard enough trying to concentrate, with Lord Lachlan standing there watching me so intently.

Suddenly, an idea came to me, and without even thinking about it, I reached out and grabbed hold of the bomb before quickly turning around and sprinting toward the window on the other side of the room.

"What are you doing?" Lord Lachlan shouted after me in disbelief, but I didn't answer him.

Instead, I focused all of my energy on reaching the window before it was too late. My heart was pounding in my chest so loudly that it felt like it might burst out at any moment as adrenaline coursed through my veins.

I was only a few feet away from the window when I heard Lord Lachlan's footsteps pounding after me, but I didn't dare turn around to see how close he was.

The moment I reached the window, I flung it open, looking at the timer that said five seconds left before I threw the bomb out as hard as I could.

It sailed through the air for a moment before disappearing from sight, and I quickly slammed the window shut, leaning my forehead against it as I tried to catch my breath.

I heard the sound of shattering glass a split second before something hit me in the back and knocked me to the ground. The air was knocked out of my lungs as I hit the ground hard, but Lord Lachlan's body cushioned mine somewhat so that I didn't get hurt too badly.

"What were you thinking?" He demanded angrily, his face inches from mine as he stared down at me with a look of disbelief. "You could have gotten yourself killed!"

"But I didn't," I shot back at him breathlessly, trying to ignore how close he was to me and focus on what was important here. "I stopped the bomb."

Lord Lachlan's face softened slightly at my words, and he let out a sigh before rolling off of me and sitting up on his knees. He held out one hand to help me up, but I ignored it and pushed myself into a sitting position on my own before slowly getting to my feet.

"That was very foolish of you," Lord Lachlan said after a moment, his voice much calmer than it had been just seconds ago. "But also very brave."

He paused for a moment, his blue eyes studying me intently as if he were trying to figure something out about me. "I think you might just have what it takes to be a Hunter after all."

"Because I have a good throwing arm?" I asked sarcastically, gesturing towards the window where the bomb had gone out.

Lord Lachlan's lips quirked up into a small smirk. "That certainly helps, but it's not the only thing."

He stood up abruptly and held out one hand to me again. "Come on, I'll take you back to Queen Melodious now so that you can get some rest before your training begins tomorrow."

I hesitated for a moment before finally placing my hand in his and letting him help me to my feet. His hand was warm and strong around mine, making my heart beat a little faster as he led me back out of the room and down the hallway toward Queen Melodious's chambers.
