A month and a half later.

Eldan is the capital of the United Free Cities and the headquarters of the Alliance of the Seven Shields, or, as it is called, the Order of the Seven Sisters, for the number of members. The largest and richest human city in Eostia, the heart and pride of the state, the embodiment of its strength and power.

So it's no surprise that this city is simply teeming with life. The streets are always full of people, the inns and taverns - visitors, and markets and stores - customers who always have something to choose from a huge variety of all kinds of goods.

But the last few days have been special, because even in such a busy place there hasn't been such a rush for years. Celestine Lucculus, High Priestess of the Goddess of Larentia, had called an extraordinary gathering, and for weeks now the noblest and richest people from all over the country had been flocking to the capital with their retinue and guards. The whole flower of society has been concentrated in one place, further invigorating the trade and bringing profit to the capital's businessmen. The honest and not so honest. After all, for those who know where to look, there are goods and entertainment of a slightly different kind...

Drugs, illegal betting, elite and not so elite brothels with exotic slaves and underground gladiatorial arenas. The owners of these wonderful establishments had already begun to collect fabulous profits and only planned to increase their income at the expense of generous customers who were not stingy with spending gold.

The shady side of Eldan was flourishing. But no one guessed yet that these were its last bread days.

The Throne Room. The Royal Palace.

The huge, high-ceilinged room, richly decorated with works of art and well lit by the sunlight through the wide windows, held a record number of visitors in the last few years. More than a hundred people, united by wealth and lineage, gathered before the throne. Noble lords, barons, dukes, and other aristocrats with their retinue, representatives of the church, including the archbishop, and simply the wealthiest merchants who had made their fortunes through wit and cunning.

The reason they were all here was extremely serious: war. Not that war would surprise anyone, since the sluggish conflict with the monsters of the wasteland had been going on for centuries, and everyone, young and old, knew about it, but something happened now that was out of the ordinary.

The famous Black Dog mercenary unit, hired by Celestine to end the confrontation with the monsters, and led by their dark sorceress Olga Discordia, queen of the dark elves and ruler of the Dark Citadel, defected to the enemy and attacked the border town of Feo along with an army of monsters. The attack was repelled, but the price was very high. The balance of power had shifted and something urgent had to be done.

The guests continued to stay, gathering in interest groups and having leisurely conversations, enjoying refreshments and food. There wasn't much food - it wasn't a banquet, after all - but enough to keep the visitors occupied until the main event began.

The gathering was watched over by an elite band of knights, led by Grave Levantine, himself chief of the royal guard, with the soft murmur of their voices. The warriors stood unwaveringly along the walls, near the doors, and beside the throne, vigilantly surveying the throne room for any unpleasant surprises or troublemakers. Fortunately, all was quiet. None of the guests made any noise, and no intruders sought to illegally enter.

Finally, after another few dozen minutes of waiting, when everyone was assembled, it was time for the protagonists to appear. The central door opened wide, and a herald entered, announcing loudly and clearly.

"Welcome, High Priestess of the Goddess Larentia, Deity in the Flesh, Commander in Chief of the Alliance of the Seven Shields, Regent of Her Royal Highness Alicia Arcturus, Celestine Lucculus!"

As soon as these words were spoken, the room exploded with applause, cheers, and bows. Some did so sincerely, but they were in the minority. The vast majority just pretended to cheer and bow for show, hiding hatred and contempt behind smiles. Accompanied by this false civility, a beautiful pale elven woman, guarded by four knights, entered the throne room. Her face was, as always, kind and maternally affectionate, her gait smooth and soft, and her snow-white robe still snow-white. But, as many observed, it was more revealing than usual.

Cutting through the crowd like a boat through water, she strode to the podium in front of the throne, which was now empty because the Crown Princess had not yet taken her seat. She, the princess, was there, too, like the other five members of the Order, waiting for her leader near the seat from which she would make her speech.

As soon as the high priestess took the podium and gestured for silence, all the sounds in the room fell silent, allowing her to speak freely.

"Greetings to you all, and thank you for taking your precious time to come," - the woman's soft, melodious voice flowed through the room. - "As you know, a terrible thing happened a month and a half ago. No, in fact, it happened even earlier. I put my people in danger by trusting the wrong people. The mercenaries I hired to keep our people from dying in war turned against us and attacked our city. They entered into a vile and unnatural alliance with the creatures of the wasteland, betraying their own people for power and short-term gain. For that I ask your forgiveness," - the priestess continued, bowing as high as the podium would allow, - "for you and all the people of the Free Cities, who will be forced to suffer in this war. But at the same time I beg you! Help me, stand with me in defense of our native land, to fight the treacherous enemy and traitors shoulder to shoulder! For only together will we be able to stand and win!"

"Of course, my Goddess!"

"You can count on me!"

"And me!"

"On us too!"

A chorus of voices broke the silence for a moment. Everyone rushed to express words of support, promising to do anything to help.

But Celestine did not believe them. Not anymore.
