Ch11 - Promise

To reach the capital, one had to travel all the way north from the settlement of Cangshan.

Su Yu hired a carriage, and the two of them leisurely entertained themselves along the route. They arrived after more than a month.

Fusang was visiting the capital for the first time. He perceived the capital to be several times larger than their previous small town, with many more people, and the scenery to be lively, rich, and attractive.

When they arrived in the capital, it was already dusk. Su Yu stayed at an inn with Fusang rather than going directly to the prime minister’s official residence.

The inns in the capital were considerably more elegant than those in small towns, and when you opened the window, you could view the bustling nightlife.

Fusang leaned against the window frame, his gaze drawn to the lively street halfway illuminated by large red lanterns.

He was lost in thought when a pair of warm palms wrapped around his waist, and Su Yu’s warm voice sounded in his ears, “SangSang, do you want to stroll the capital at night?”

Fusang hesitated for a moment before asking, “Will there be a large number of people coming out to play at night?”

“Of course, there will be a lot of people at night, and many snacks are famous in the capital.” Su Yu said, smiling.

When food was mentioned, a certain someone who was exhausted from travel instantly became bright-eyed and asked, “What’s there to eat?”

Su Yu laughed. “I’m not sure about it. Let’s go have a look, shall we?”

“Mn!” Fusang repeatedly nodded.

The capital was more vibrant in the evening than during the day, with bright red lanterns hanging high on both sides of the street, vendors hawking their wares in an endless stream beside the road, and pedestrians overflowing the entire street.

Fusang could only grip Su Yu’s hand tightly for fear of being pushed away.

“Are there really so many people here every day?” Fusang inquired.

“Well, this is Shengjing. There are always a lot of people if there is no curfew at night.” Su Yu kept his hand on his waist, avoiding the pedestrians close to Fusang.

“There are many trinkets here. What do you like?” he asked, pointing to various roadside stalls.

The vendors’ booth had a stunning array of items for sale, but Fusang was uninterested.

Fusang ate the cakes mindlessly.

The throng was so dense and raucous that they couldn’t see the end at all. It was extremely busy and crowded.

Fusang suddenly missed the shabby and secluded little thatched cottage in Cangshan.

If they still lived there, he’d be nestled in Su Yu’s arms, accompanying him to watch the stars or leaning on his shoulder, listening to him read.

Although it was not as active as the capital, it would make him feel more at ease and content.

There was some movement in front of him just as he was sighing.

A young girl in a pink dress blushed and spoke to Su Yu, who was standing next to him.

The young girl was lovely, staring at Su Yu with huge eyes as she passed him the finely made embroidered brocade pouch in her hand.

Even though Fusang didn’t know much, he could figure out what she intended to do.

Fusang was already irritated, so when he witnessed this scene, he erupted. Regardless of whether Su Yu declined or accepted, his expression darkened but remained calm as he turned around and walked away, feeling wronged.

Su Yu anxiously chased him down, but he didn’t listen to his explanation.

In fact, there were several occasions where girls had approached Su Yu with romantic aspirations when they went to Cangshan town, but he didn’t take it seriously at the time. He didn’t know what was wrong this time; he’d been feeling uneasy from head to toe since entering the capital.

As if he’d always been stepping on lofty clouds and fluttering around, unable to find a safe landing spot.

That’s why he was anxious and distressed, and an insignificant issue had caused him to explode.

Fusang lay still on the table in the inn’s guest room, and no matter how hard Su Yu knocked, he did not respond.

He wasn’t furious at Su Yu; he was angry with himself.

This breath that seemed stuck in his chest was exerting too much pressure on him, making him feel suffocated and uncomfortable, yet he couldn’t unblock it no matter what he tried.

Fusang felt pained and couldn’t help but bury his head in the crook of his arms.

… … …

When Su Yu hurriedly got the innkeeper to unlock the door, he witnessed the following scene: a single lamp blazing in the room, a thin young man crying silently on the small square table, and his slender frame trembling slightly due to his spasmodic sobbing.

Su Yu, who had never seen him like this before, felt a dull ache in his heart.

He promptly snatched the lonely and frail figure into his arms.

“It’s all my fault. Don’t be angry, SangSang…” he carefully coaxed.

“I’m not angry.” Fusang looked up with red eyes and said, “I’m just…still not used to it.”

And I’m not sure if I’ll ever get used to it.

Su Yu sighed as he closed his eyes and tilted his head to kiss Fusang’s forehead. “I’m sorry. I was careless and did not consider your feelings.”

He stroked the back of the person in his arms and softly calmed him till Fusang fell asleep.

The person in his arms had his eyes closed, his small eyebrows were tightly wrinkled, tears clung to his eyelashes, and his eyes were puffy.

Su Yu was very distressed to see him in this state.

He covered his sleeping lover with a quilt and stood up.

He took a long, deep look at the person on the bed, then turned around and walked out. He appeared to have reached a decision.

It was already the next day when Fusang awoke.

It was Su Yu’s day to return home.

Fusang was so preoccupied with this issue that he sat on the bed, staring blankly.

“Are you awake, SangSang?” Su Yu opened the door and entered the room with a basin of hot water.

Fusang was brought back to his senses by his soft call and jumped out of bed after getting dressed.

“Come over and wash up.” Su Yu smiled and waved at him.

“Are we heading to the prime minister’s house once we freshen up?” Fusang wiped his face and inquired quietly.

However, Su Yu merely chuckled and shook his head, “No.”

Su Yu paused when he saw Fusang’s astonished expression and added, “I already went there last night.”

“I made the decision not to return to the prime minister’s family. We’re leaving the capital today.”

Fusang’s eyes widened in disbelief after hearing what he stated. His lips quivered as he asked, “Why…do you suddenly not want to go…”

“Don’t you want to live with your family very much?”

“SangSang, you are the most important family member to me in this world,” Su Yu said, shaking his head and looking at him with firm and gentle eyes.

“I don’t want to make you miserable; I want you to be…happy forever.”

The little fox stood in the same spot, at a loss. His eyes were teary as if moved.

Su Yu cradled him in his arms, affectionately rubbed the top of his hair, and whispered: “We won’t be able to return to Cangshan, SangSang. However, we can live in other places, including the mountains. There will be no one else, just the two of us. Does that sound good?”

Fusang buried his head in his arms and continued to nod.

“Su Yu, I will always be with you,” he mumbled after a long time.

The little fox made a solemn pledge.

There was a chuckling sound from above his head before Su Yu leaned down and kissed his brow.
