Ch5 - Jealousy

Fusang escaped to the fox cave and foolishly sat there for an entire day.

He had no idea what was wrong with him. He just felt like his heart was in shambles. He remembered Su Yu’s face one moment and his incomprehensible gaze the next.

Fusang was troubled with anxiety and huddled in the cave, yearning to go back but feeling a bit terrified.

He fell asleep on the ground in a stupor.

He appeared to have had a dream in which Su Yu was calling him, his voice growing louder and louder till it rang in his ears.

He recognized it wasn’t a dream when he opened his eyes and awoke. Su Yu was calling him, and the voice came from outside the fox cave.

“SangSang! Are you here, SangSang?”

He shouted for what seemed like an eternity, and his voice was scratchy and slightly agitated.

Fusang was distressed when he heard it. He jumped up from the ground and dashed outside.

Outside, it was already dark, and a half-round lonely moon hung in the deep night sky. The hazy moonlight was everywhere on the mountain’s summit. Su Yu held a lantern in his hand, and the red light of the lantern reflected his attractive face. When he saw Fusang rush out of the cave, his eyes flashed with bright light, and even his worn face was filled with joy.

The lantern in his hand was tossed aside at random, rolling away for two rounds. Su Yu couldn’t care less about anything else and rushed forward to hold the person he had been missing for a day and had finally found, in his arms.

“SangSang…” He hugged the guy in his arms hard, his voice sorrowful and fearful. “I assumed you… left without informing me again.”

Fusang could feel Su Yu’s body quivering lightly, and his heart ached slightly. He brushed his hands on his back comfortingly, leaning his head on his shoulders.

“I’m sorry, SangSang. Today is my fault; I’m too impatient… I believed you were aware of my feelings…” Su Yu’s anxieties persisted given the fact that he had spent the day searching along the mountain.

“I should not have been rude to you. Please don’t be mad at me.”

Su Yu’s voice was clear and warm, yet it weighed heavily on Fusang’s heart.

He bit his lower lip, unsure what to do, and took two steps back. “Actually, actually I…”

Actually, I’m not a human, I’m a fox.

He couldn’t say what he wanted to confess when he glanced up at those gentle smiling eyes.

Su Yu would be scared away if he spoke up about himself, and he might never want to see him again.

He’d always been reluctant to part with such a beautiful person…

Fusang swallowed bitterness in his heart, but when he opened his mouth to confess, it changed into, “Actually, I… I’m not angry.”

When the little fox heard about food, his eyes brightened up for a second.

“SangSang, let’s go home,” Su Yu smiled helplessly, turning to pick up the lantern on the ground and stretching out the other hand palm up for Fusang to clasp.

A certain someone finally handed over his hand awkwardly.

The mountain road was rugged, and the mountain forest was windy and damp on an autumn night. Su Yu was worried Fusang might catch a cold, so he wrapped his arms over him, shielding him from the wind.

Su Yu’s breathing became a little heavy after a few steps of walking with his sweetheart in his arms and his body so soft and warm.

Unfortunately, this idiotic fox stared at him with those misty and hazy fox eyes and rubbed unceremoniously into his arms, raising the temperature of his entire body.

Su Yu became increasingly convinced that the little fox should return his affection, but perhaps because he was still young and had limited experience with others, he did not comprehend love in the human world.

Su Yu was lost in his thoughts when he suddenly remembered an invitation he received a few days before.

An idea came to him in the twinkling of an eye.

“Sangsang.” He called softly.

“What?”

Su Yu stated, “The day after tomorrow, I’ll be in town for a banquet. Do you want to accompany me?”

“What is a banquet?” curiously inquired the little fox.

Su Yu laughed involuntarily, “A friend of mine is getting married and has invited us to join in the fun.”

The little fox frowned in confusion, “What does getting married mean? Why should we join in the fun?”

Su Yu touched his head and smiled mysteriously: “You’ll know when you see it.”

The day after tomorrow was bright and sunny. Fusang woke up early in the morning, pestering Su Yu and claiming he wanted to attend the banquet in town.

Fusang had no idea what a banquet was, but since he could eat, it had to be something wonderful.

They arrived just in time for the wedding procession to receive the bridal sedan chair at the bridegroom’s home, and they were laughing and enjoying the entire time. The groom, who rode the date red horse in front, was dressed in bright red wedding garb and had a pleased expression on his face.

Fusang pushed his way through the crowd, watching the groom in red riding a large horse walk to the sedan chair and kick the sedan door to loud cheers.

Immediately after that, a fair, soft, and smooth hand stretched out from the pearl curtain of the sedan chair, the fingers as brilliant as scallions, and it was especially noticeable in the sunlight.

The groom took that hand and led the bride, who was wearing a red veil, out of the sedan chair.

The sound of firecrackers lasted a long time, and the party got increasingly loud and joyous.

Then there was the ceremony in which heaven and earth were worshiped.

Fusang was seeing a marriage ceremony for the first time, and he was captivated by the bride and groom bowing to each other.

“Su Yu, is this what you called getting married? It’s so much fun!” Fusang was wholly engrossed, his face full of excitement.

A square-headed uncle next to him looked at Fusang with interest and joked: “Did this little brother come to the banquet with your elder brother? What? Do you feel envious when you see someone getting married and taking a bride?”

“I’m not,” Fusang refuted, pouting.

Uncle SquareHead laughed: “Hahaha, it is really too early for you, but I believe your elder brother has reached the marriageable age, and he is rather handsome! When he marries, he will undoubtedly find you a lovely and charming sister-in-law.”

“Marries…” Fusang whispered quietly, turning his head to face Su Yu next to him.

Su Yu simply gave a small smile.

Su Yu will marry in the future? He’ll lead the bride in a red veil and worship heaven and earth alongside her, just like that groom.

Fusang’s heart unexpectedly gave rise to a slightly stuffy feeling that was difficult to bear when he thought this way.

Getting married is not at all fun! He snorted softly and shifted his gaze away from the newlyweds in the main hall.

Fusang’s depression persisted until the end of the wedding feast, and even the dazzling array of delectable fine food at the banquet failed to lift his spirits.

He followed Su Yu home with a sullen expression, without saying anything.

But that person looked to be clueless, as he continued to draw him into banter.

Fusang was even more depressed.

When he got to the house’s entrance, he remained there pouting angrily, dawdling, and refusing to enter.

Su Yu examined his awkward appearance, and his gentle eyes, which were hidden under long eyelashes, blazed with darkness without a trace.

“SangSang, what’s wrong? Are you not feeling well?” Su Yu asked in a warm voice.

Fusang left two small tooth marks on his captivating red lips as he asked in a low voice, “You… will you also get married in the future?”

The moonlight poured down in torrents like water, enveloping the mountain woodland, while the night breeze blew the sleeve of the man in front of him. He was obviously very close to him, but somehow he felt so far away.

Fusang seemed nervous as he peered at Su Yu with teary eyes.

Su Yu was silent for a time before softly laughing, “Of course.”

His magnanimous admission was like a sharp arrow, accurately and neatly piercing Fusang’s heart.

Fusang didn’t know what was wrong with him, but after hearing this response, he felt unbearable pain in his heart, and his eyes began to sting. The emotions called feeling wronged and panic attached to his chest and continued to swell and fill up, almost instantly bursting out.

He was exceedingly uncomfortable as long as he imagined Su Yu would be with someone else.

Su Yu felt both thrilled and distressed in his heart as he gazed at the aggrieved little fox, whose eyes had turned red in an instant. He was about to approach him to comfort him when he was abruptly pushed away.

A certain someone who was pouting angrily didn’t want to talk to him anymore.

Su Yu gave a helpless smile. He couldn’t tolerate seeing Fusang’s beautiful fox eyes full of tears that were going to fall down the corner of his eyes. He hurriedly hugged him closely and inquired happily, “Is SangSang upset that I’ll marry?”

Fusang couldn’t push him, but he was aggrieved and annoyed, saying: “When you get married, someone else will accompany you; I will leave at once!”

“No!” Su Yu’s voice sounded deep and hoarse, his grip on Fusang’s waist tightening even more. “I won’t let you go!”

He said this sentence very seriously, with unparalleled harshness and tyranny, in stark contrast to the previous mild tone.

Fusang was even more aggrieved, his voice breaking with sobs: “I’ll go! Humph… I’ll go!”

Su Yu was afraid that if he persisted, he would leave in rage, so he did not dare to tease him any more. He promptly coaxed him, softly saying, “Good SangSang, don’t be angry. I was just teasing you. I’m not getting married, okay?”

When the man in his arms heard this, he cried even more sadly.

Su Yuzheng felt helpless due to his tears, but he didn’t expect the person in his arms to break free when he loosened his grip and turned to run into the mountains.

Fortunately, he hugged him right away.

“SangSang, let me explain!” Su Yu was so anxious about Fusang running away from home again that he couldn’t care about anything else, and the words that had been hidden in his heart came flooding out.

“SangSang, I’m not lying when I say I want to marry! But I don’t want to marry another woman; I want to marry you!”
