Chapter 26:

Some Advice

Selene watched Jace from a distance. Unsure how to approach him again after their first date. She had never felt so anxious before. It was a new feeling she didn't exactly hate. Holding her hand to her chest, she felt the beating of her heart. "I want to see him again..."

It was this thought that brought her to Westview. Ever since her heart began to experience these feelings, she's done things she never thought she would. Some would consider it stalking, but for her it was necessary. A way to calm these emotions rising inside of her.

A while ago he had just walked into a large apartment complex and had yet to come out. She knew this place, for it was where she went to talk with Liana and Kiera. They were two very interesting people. Liana was deeply in love with Jace, and Kiera...she cared for him and had burgeoning feelings. Kind of like Selene.

Though there was a key difference. Liana was everything to Kiera, and Jace was something new. For Selene, Jace was becoming everything, and quickly. His touch, his smell, his smile and laugh. She wanted to hear it again. "That laugh..." She found herself smiling, knowing he laughed because of her.

Sitting across the street at a coffee shop, she waited patiently for him to leave. From there, she'd follow him and see what else he did. Every moment she had with him etched into her heart and mind. "Is this what it's like to love?" Selene wasn't so naive as to think this was normal, but it was the first time she ever felt genuine love for someone.

It burned hot like coals nesting in her chest. Growing hotter the closer she got to him. Burning her with an intensity that brought about an ecstasy unlike any other. When she saw him smile, she felt her entire world brighten. When he laughed, it was the most pure form of sound to her ears.

"This seat taken?" A familiar voice caught her attention as Selene turned to see Kiera.

"...No," Selene stated simply, watching her carefully.

Right now, Selene was under a glamour. Short, mousy brown curly hair and freckles. Grey eyes hidden behind fake glasses. Human in appearance. She watched as Kiera sat down, a knowing smile on her face as she looked out of the window.

They sat there awkwardly for a moment as Selene wondered why Kiera was here. It didn't take long for her to understand. She knew, but was being polite about it. Sighing, Selene took a sip of her drink as she pretended not to notice.

"...You know," Kiera spoke softly, barely above a whisper, "I knew you were strong, but that glamour...damn."

Kiera's eyes passed over her, shimmering with a pink hue. "Curious..." Selene raised an eyebrow as she felt the subtle shift in power upon Kiera's eyes. "She's strong..." Selene smiled, intrigued. Selene had dismissed it before, but this woman before her was near on par with her.

"I suppose...You saw the true me," Selene looked out of the window at the apartment across the street, "Those with good eyes can often see the true form."

"...Hmm, just a bit," Kiera responded humbly, "I saw you follow him. So I followed you."

Selene took to drinking again, organizing her thoughts. She had indeed saw Kiera go into his apartment building, and then leave. Yes, she knew where he lived. She wasn't ashamed about it. Though she was worried how he'd think about her if he knew.

However, it was curious that Kiera had been there. She was torn between following her, or following him. She had entered with a bag, but left without it. She chose to stay, wait. Shortly after, Jace came out carrying that same bag.

"...What were you two doing?" Selene asked, a near deadly tone to it, "I don't dislike you, but-"

"Relax," Kiera said in amusement, leaning forward as she rested her head in her hands, "We had lunch, courtesy of Liana."

"...Apologies," Selene brought back her tone a bit, realizing she was becoming a bit too protective, "You care for him as well."

"I do," Kiera hesitantly nodded, "Tell me, is this your first time?"

They both met each other's gazes as Selene nodded. Kiera already knew, so it was strange that she even asked. "Perhaps she's just confirming..." Selene watched her closely.

"Let me give you some advice, as the senior here," Kiera's expression grew deadly serious, "You're good, really good. Yet, your technique...You have the way into his life. Use it."

"What's wrong with my technique?" Selene was curious at what she meant, "He doesn't know, and can't sense me, so-"

"Let me rephrase," Kiera laughed lightly, "I kept my distance a long time from Liana. Afraid. After all, she had Jace. I knew for the longest time, but that fool...I couldn't hold back my own feelings after a while. He was oblivious to hers. Still is, though he's getting closer."

"Your point?"

"My point, dear," Kiera watched her, tilting her head slightly, "Is that you don't have to wait. You don't have to sneak around like this. Well...maybe a little, but I'll give you some help with that."

"...Why?" Selene was suspicious of her intentions, unsure what to do with them, "What do you get out of this?"

"Ah..." Kiera looked out of the window over at the apartment, fondness in her eyes, "I get to see Liana's smile. Hear her laugh...and I get to see Jace finally find some peace."

Kiera's eyes shifted towards Selene in that instance. It was a look that gave even Selene pause. A respect given to Kiera from Selene. It was a look that showed her conviction.

"Be that peace for him," Kiera told her, a weight to her words, "Liana is but one part of it. She will act when the time is right. You don't want to be left behind, do you?"

"...No," Selene stated simply, as if it was fact, "And I won't."

"Good," Kiera stretched back in her chair, letting out a satisfied sigh, "I have some work to do for him, if you're interested...you can help."

Selene's ears perked up at the chance to be of help to him. Kiera's smile as she looked towards her was very knowing. "Damn...she got me." Selene was quite impressed, as Kiera knew just how to get her moving.

"First things first," Kiera told her, "Message him. See him. Don't keep your distance. After all...that pain will build the longer you're away from him. Trust me...I know."

Kiera held her hand to her own heart, smiling tenderly. Liana was important to her, and she was giving advice to Selene. She knew what Kiera meant. The few days she's been away from Jace was agonizing. Her emotions stronger, to the point of even killing Helen. Though, that would have been done in time regardless. She was an annoyance.

"Ha! You did something!" Kiera suddenly leaned in, surprising Selene at her closeness, "I can see it in your face. Oh, we'll get along just fine."

It was uncanny how Kiera simply knew she had killed someone. "I guess we are similar..." Selene watched her, feeling a certain bond begin to form. Kiera stood from the table in excitement, near prancing over to her side.

"Shall we go then?" Kiera offered her arm to her, "I want to hear all about it."

Looking towards her, Selene felt a sense of kinship and understanding she never felt before. "Perhaps...this isn't so bad after all." Selene smiled slightly, standing as she took her arm. She preferred Jace's touch, but didn't mind either Liana or Kiera.

They were the closest people to him besides his mother and Balek. As long as they cared for him, she was happy. Arm in arm, they made their way out into Westview. On the way, as per the deal struck with Kiera, Selene sent a message.

>To <3Jace<3: Palm Hills Emporium. I'll message you with a day and time.

>From <3Jace<3: Is it...a date?

>To <3Jace<3: Yes, is that a problem?

He didn't answer right away, and though that wasn't an issue, after a few minutes she began to worry. Did he not enjoy their date? Her thoughts began to spiral before finally a reply came through.

>From <3Jace<3: No...Let me know when. Can't wait. ;)

With relief, Selene let out the breath she had been holding. Her heart soaring at the thought of seeing him again.

Liana watched Jace carefully over the cup of tea she held in her hands. He had been talking about nothing in particular when his attention shifted, going to something in his vision. Most likely a message. A light blush entered his face as he glanced towards her. "How cute..." It was as if he was asking permission even before he spoke.

"S-Sorry about that," Jace apologized for stopping mid-sentence, "Selene messaged me...Asked me out on another date."

Liana looked into her tea, taking a hearty sip of the sweet liquid. Closing her eyes, she felt the warmth enter her as she contemplated her emotions. She was happy for him, but also longed for a date with him herself. Still, she wouldn't hold him back. His happiness and wellbeing were important to her.

"You're going, right?" She asked him, opening her eyes as she smiled gently, "You should go. The previous date went well?"

His eyes held a hesitation. Not quite pain, but rather...concern. "Silly boy..." Setting her cup down, her smiled became warmer.

"Jace? It did go well, didn't it?" Liana, of course, knew very well it had, but as he didn't know that, she wanted to hear it from him.

"It...Yeah," Jace looked away rather sheepishly as his face softened, "She was amazing..."

Liana's heart soared as she saw that look upon his face. He genuinely enjoyed himself. "Good...My instincts were right," Liana nodded, leaning back into her chair.

"Then, go," Liana laughed lightly, "Do you need my permission or something?"

It was a jab at him. Teasingly poking fun at his hesitation. She knew why he hesitated. It was his feelings for her, but she didn't want that to hold him back from happiness. Their feelings for each other would come in time.

"I...don't know," Jace whispered, "I guess not. I just-"

"Jace," Liana interrupted sternly, her eyes hardening, "It's not like you to be this indecisive."

"...Before my choices hurt others when I just acted," Jace's words stung her heart, as she heard the pain in his voice, "I don't want to hurt those I care about."

"Oh, Jace..." Liana gazed with compassion towards him. He was hurting so much and still thought of others. He tried so hard, which made any fall hit even harder.

"Who would you be hurting?" Liana asked, a rather unfair question, as she knew very well who he felt like he was hurting, but she couldn't just say she was fine, or he'd know she knew, "As I said, you should go. What is your heart telling you?"

"...Too much," Jace laughed dryly, leaning his head against the chair, "Alright, Liana. I'll go. Thank you."

"Anytime, Jace," Liana told him, "You know that."

"Yeah, I do," Jace smiled such a genuine smile it nearly brought her to blushing, "Alright...I sent my reply. I'm going."

"Good, now...let's catch up a bit, yeah?" Liana smiled deviously, "Tell me all about her."

Leaning forward, Liana knew who she was, but wanted to hear from his own perspective. The blush entering his face as he tried to find the words to respond was quite adorable. Liana felt at peace for the first time in a while. This was how Jace should be. Able to focus on the lighter side of life. She would do everything she could to help him.
