Chapter 27:
On the Trail
There was nothing in this world that had made Selene as happy as she was now. It was the first time she ever had something she cared so much about. She knew she was helping Jace, and that was all that mattered to her. So what if someone was missing an arm? "There's cybernetics..." Selene rationalized as she looked at the loose limb in her hand.
The man they confronted terrified out of their mind. Kiera knelt before him, a cruel smile on her face. "She's efficient..." Selene tossed the arm away, feeling dirty just touching it. The mere thought of anyone but Jace was filthy. Unfortunately, there was nowhere to clean herself at the moment.
"We told you," Kiera's words were laced with ice, "You shouldn't have run...now look at them."
Kiera motioned to the many bodies littered around the warehouse. Selene looked upon them with uncaring eyes. It was a stark contrast to being a nurse, someone who saved lives. The irony wasn't lost on her. She wanted to save people, but she was not opposed to killing them either.
"The tech you sold Black Suit," Selene towered over the man, "It has a tracking number, doesn't it?"
"I-I don't..." The man quivered, his strength diminishing, "We take...the tracking off..."
"Now, you and I both know that's not true," Kiera pressed her hand to the man's stump, her hand glowed red like a hot coal as the man screamed in pain.
The smell of burning flesh entered Selene's nostrils. A truly abhorrent scent.
"I thought we knew each other, Trev," Kiera was almost sympathetic, "To think our business dealings end like this..."
The man was in his mid to late thirties. Bald with tanned skin. Slightly muscular with tattoos up the right side of his neck and face. A Renegade who ran an illicit operation out of a warehouse in Westview. Smuggling and selling of stolen tech.
"I know that you track all your merchandise," Kiera turned up the heat on his flesh causing an agonizing scream, "I've found a few on my own. You remember? You came to try and collect them. That didn't work out, did it?"
"N-No..." Trev responded through gritted teeth, "I thought...we had...a deal..."
"Oh, we did, Trev," Kiera mocked him, pretending to be sad and hurt, "Until your men decided to put their irons in my face. Now...why would they do that?"
"I don't-" Trev grunted, interrupted by Kiera gripping his stump with great force.
"You do," Kiera insisted, trying to jog his memory, "Remember what you said? I don't know that bitch. Get rid of them."
Kiera's voice pretended to be him, growing deeper and mocking.
"All I did was ask to see you," Kiera sighed, shaking her head, "I told you if you didn't come out, you'd know what would happen."
"F-Fuck you!" Trev spat in her direction, only for it to fall uselessly against her barrier and then to the ground.
"That's not very nice..." Kiera looked to the floor solemnly, "I was going to let you live for all you've done for me, but now...Now I just want the information and your life."
Trev's eyes grew terrified as Kiera got really close to him.
"Consider yourself lucky," She glanced back at Selene who watched with a cool gaze, "My friend there isn't as nice as I am. Now, why did you say that to me?"
"Y-You're bad...for business," He breathed heavily, "You buy, but we don't get back. Boss's orders...Ah, fuck it. I work with you, I'm dead. I don't...I'm dead..."
Trev began to laugh as he lost his mind, the hope in his eyes going out. Motioning with his head up to the second level.
"Computer holds transactions..." Trev shook his head, "Pass is BIGdick69."
Kiera and Selene exchanged a look then, both feeling the disgust and cringe from such a password. Their expressions telling of how they felt about that.
"Oh, don't look at me like that..." He sighed, adjusting himself against the wall he was leaned up against, "Just...make it quick."
"For what it's worth, Trev," Kiera stood up as she patted his cheek, "It was nice working with you."
"Oh, screw you," Trev spat once more, completely defeated.
Kiera's eyes flashed pink as power surged. Trev's head exploded in a cascade of crimson. Brain, tech, and bone flew everywhere, colliding with their barriers before falling to the ground.
"Was that necessary?" Selene asked as they made their way up stairs, "Though I admit, I would have killed him myself."
"Perhaps not," Kiera shrugged, glancing over at her, "But he wasn't very nice, and they did threaten us."
"I agree," Selene was completely calm as Kiera continued to watch her out of the corner of her eye.
"Then why did you ask?" Kiera seemed curious, "On top of that...you don't seem too bothered by death. Even though you killed that woman, it wasn't the first time you killed someone, is it?"
Selene simply remained silent, though gave her a look that told her everything. Selene had indeed killed before. It wasn't pleasant, at least not at the time. Selene had been just a child when her father put her life in danger. It was either her life or the assailants. Of course, she chose her life.
It was a lesson her father wanted to teach her. She had to be cold and ruthless, or others would take advantage of her. Her life would be in danger as the heir to the St.Claire Family. She had to be willing to kill not only to defend herself, but to show others who wish to crush the St.Claire Family just what they are capable of.
"Well, regardless," Kiera dismissed it, "It was necessary. On one hand, they weren't a great person. Extorted people who desperately need the product they sell only to take it back from them later in a theft to resell to the next. Sometimes...it's life-threatening."
"So, you're doing the city a favor?" Selene was doubtful of her intentions.
"You could say that," Kiera remained neutral, "I'm not exactly heartless, you know. Just because of my feelings for Liana doesn't mean I don't feel anything elsewhere."
"...I suppose you're right," Selene thought on her own life and the people within it.

She ran away from her parents to live a life all her own. To explore the world and see what there was. In it, she found Jace. Someone who was quickly made his way inside of her heart as if he always belonged there. "And he'll always remain..." Selene told herself, looking down at the bodies below.
She didn't exactly care for others, but she didn't want to see them hurt either. At least those who didn't deserve it. She disliked stepping on those who didn't deserve it. Anyone who got in her way, or that of Jace, however, definitely deserved it.
"In a way," Selene mentioned to Kiera, "It keeps them safe, doesn't it?"
Kiera's hand clapped her firmly on the shoulder.
"Exactly!" Kiera laughed lightly, motioning towards the door, "That's how it is. Now, how about we check that manifest?"
Selene smirked, nodding her head. The two of them making their way inside to the computers within. The place was indeed an office, lit with soft lighting and the low hum of fans buzzing in the machines to keep them cool.
Wires hung from the ceiling, connecting to who knows what. On the far wall was a desk with several monitors all stacked on top of and next to each other via arms connecting them on the back. On the screen of one of them was a login.
>PLEASE ENTER PASSWORD
Making her way over, Kiera activated the keyboard as it sprung to life. A projected, textile greenish hologram with various keys resembling that of a keyboard, plus extra buttons added in the more modern years. Sighing to herself she hesitated before entering the password.
"Honestly, what a vulgar password..." She muttered as Selene looked around the place.
Something felt off, but she wasn't quite sure what. Closing her eyes, she took several deep breaths. She felt the power inside of herself as her senses expanded. Like a radar, she felt the surrounding area. No life besides Kiera in the building, but as she expanded her senses outside her eyes quickly opened.
"You might want to find it fast," Selene made her way to the window of the office which was currently covered by blinds.
"Something up?" Kiera asked as she glanced up.
Peeking ever so slightly outside, Selene's eyes glossed over as she concentrated energy inside of them. Her vision turning thermographic as several heat signatures began to light up just outside of the warehouse walls. "Five of them to the north...seven to the east," Selene shut the blinds and turned back towards Kiera.
"We're being surrounded," Selene told her, breathing deeply as she sent out her consciousness.
Clairvoyance. Magic that allows one to see outside of themselves for a brief moment. For most Ascended, they could never get to the skill level required. However, she wasn't most Ascended. Her vision shifted as it hovered above the warehouse. She could see them now in the distance. Police vehicles. No sirens, no lights. "It's a raid..."
"Shit," Selene's vision snapped back to her as she quickly made her way to Kiera, "Police are nearing. It's a raid. We have to hurry."
Kiera nodded, moving over as another keyboard popped into existence. The two of them began working in unison. Searching the archives and manifests for the tech sold to Black Suit. Time was running out, but both worked quickly and without panic.
There were hundreds of items sold, but they were only looking for one. The entries were obscure and difficult to track, but they had a pattern. Soon Selene picked up the pattern, increasing the speed at which she searched. Finally, they came across it.
>LS Valkyrie
>Sold: Black Suit
>Price: 200,000C
"Life support?" Selene was curious what Black Suit was doing buying a Life Support system, especially a Valkyrie. One of the most expensive and high-end systems on the market. Then, he sold it to a Spider.
"What does a Spider need with it?" Kiera was of the same mindset as her, "It's life support...quick, download the tracker."
Nodding, Selene grabbed a nearby shard and inserted it into the computer. The download began. Just as the download started, she sensed the signatures getting closer.
>55%....67%...84%....100%. COMPLETED
With deft hands the shard was removed. Exchanging a look, they nodded to each other. Making their way out of the door, they knew they couldn't leave through the ground floor. They had to go up. With expert movement they leapt, pushing themselves off the railing and up into the rafters.
Their bodies light from the application of magic on their bodies. As they watched, several doors were blown open as heavy boots marched into the entire warehouse. Heavy, dark armor adorned their bodies with the badge of the Neo City PD emblazoned on the front. Flashlights lit the ground floor as they scanned the room.
"NCPD! EVERYONE ON THE GROU...What the shit?" A gruff voice called out in authority only to suddenly turn to confusion.
"Uhm, Chief, think we're too late," A male officer spoke up as they knelt down by a corpse.
"Jesus Christ..." A female officer looked around as the others scanned the room, "What happened here?"
"I've no idea..." The Chief took off his helmet to reveal a grizzled old face, "Spread out. See if we can't salvage something from this."
Walking over to the corpse of Trev, the chief looked down at him as he simply shook his head.
"Damn...poor bastard," He muttered, "Probably deserved it, but fuck...Diaz! Take Team 2 and check upstairs!"
"On it, sir!" The man acknowledged as he stood and began leading a team off.
That's when Kiera and Selene took their leave. As if like ghosts, they slipped through the open window in the roof of the warehouse. Silent as the very night, leaving without a single trace.
