'What a strange man,' Gardenia thought.

Gingerly, she rubbed her throat and felt her vocal cords damaged.

"A-Ah..." she tested her voice before returning to a coughing fit. It hurts.

Once her coughing had settled, she leaned back on the hard, cold stone wall.

That man was strong enough to be at least tier A. She wondered if that was why her clan fled? But, no, that couldn't be it.

Master was able to defeat tier S hunters. There must be another reason why they had left. Perhaps she would never know since she would die soon.

Tears welled up in her eyes again. It had been over two weeks since she met the hunter, and he had still not returned.

She recalled the memory of whenthe hunter screamed in pain after he left her room. She scrambled to stand up and tried to help him, but the chains stopped her short.

She didn't mean to eavesdrop on the hunter's conversation with his companion.

Gardenia closed her eyes; she burned with envy to have a companion she could speak with ease.

Memories of the villagers treating her lovingly flooded her mind.

What should have been good memories were tainted by her master's hand.

No matter how hard she cried, Tilly would never return. Apologies couldn't turn back the time either.

Gardenia drew in her legs and hugged them.

If only vampires never existed.

She bit into her lower lip.

The hunter had suffered that night. He had fainted and was drenched in cold sweat.

The whimpers he had tried to hold back escaped with every breath he took.

At times like this, she was almost thankful her body did not require sleep. She was sure that her dreams would only be filled with nightmares.

She raised her hand and touched her tender throat. The hunter had wanted her to die. He had broken into tears as he desperately grabbed hold of her neck.

When he looked at her, the hunter's eyes wavered between sympathy and hatred. But the hatred in his eyes was familiar. She saw it so many times that she had lost count. She was sure that a vampire killed someone he had loved.

Her stomach twisted in pain. Hunger. It was the one state she couldn't bear to be in.

Gardenia bit her arm and extracted blood.

It tasted disgusting, but she was so hungry.

Hunger was worse than any beatings she had to endure. She wished she could die from starvation. It would be better than having her sanity slowly withering away.

Pressing her forehead against her knees, she counted backwards from one thousand. She had to endure it. The hunter would come again asking for answers, and if he saw her in a ravaged state, he would kill her without sending her off with a prayer.

"Ugh..." Her throat burned. She was parched.

Her mouth salivated as she thought about the pig wasting away in the dining hall.

'No, no, no... think about the villagers...their bodies are there too.'

It did not curb her appetite in the slightest. She hadn't been fed for two months as punishment from her master.

She had never gone longer than a month without feeding.

Coughing, blood mingled with her excessive saliva and dribbled down her chin.

'Hungry...Hungry...Hunter... please... come... soon.' Her thoughts shattered like a kaleidoscope.

She gnawed on her arm; more blood spilled over.

Gardenia's mind screamed at her body to stop. The more she lost blood, the hungrier she would get.

She sobbed before going back into a coughing fit. Her throat was raw from the injury, but her empty stomach was all she could focus on.

Gardenia fell to the floor, writhing from the inexplicable torment her body was undergoing from the lack of food.

Her wrist started to ache. She raised her arm, and the manacle slid past her wrist and exposed the golden mark before it faded away. She dropped her arm back to her side.

As long as she had this mark, she would remain weak. As a result, injuries would heal slower, and her power was significantly reduced. But this mark also decreased the frequency of her needing to feed, and the sunlight didn't drain her powers like the other vampires.

She could've freed herself to find food if she didn't have this mark. But wishing away her mark wasn't going to solve her current predicament. She pressed her lips against her wrist and closed her eyes.

Though she was sad the mark failed her, she would never regret her choice for trying to become human.

Someone entered her room. They were light-footed.

"Shit. So, this wasn't a fever dream."

Gardenia flinched at the man's voice.

"Hey. Get up, you monster."

She could hear his pulse.

She was hungry.

No, she was beyond hungry. She was famished.

"Hey!"

The man's hand shook her shoulder, and her head lolled back.

He looked taken aback.

Her eyes quickly found the side of his neck; she could see his pulse beneath his thin skin.

"What's with you?" He asked.

She was hungry.

So, so, hungry.

She was so hungry that she wanted to cry.

With all her strength, she pushed the man.

The man fell over, and she quickly climbed over him and placed her lips against the side of his neck.

Before she could open her mouth, her back hit the wall, and she heard a distinct crack from her head.

But the pain didn't matter. Gardenia was hungry. She was so hungry and weak. She had used her remaining energy to push the man, and now she couldn't move.

"H-hungry..." Her voice croaked. "P-please...h-hungry..."

Her mind was only on one track.

She needed to feed.

She needed to eat.

She needed blood.

The man sighed and walked toward her. "Figured you're like the rest of them."

Blood dripped on the floor, and Gardenia's nose twitched. The familiar cloying scent filled her small space. She was hungry and nauseous.

The man supported her neck, and with the other hand, he held his fist over her mouth. Blood dripped down, and a drop landed on her lips.

She shuddered in disgust. No, no, this wasn't what she wanted. She turned her face away.

Her stomach heaved. She needed to get away from this scent, or else she was going to–

She rolled away from the man's hold and promptly threw up.
