If a person's life could be summed up to one purpose, Raphael's purpose would be to kill all the vampires.

From a very young age, he had a knack for picking out vampires disguised as humans. All vampires exude a scent of rotting meat boiling in fetid water. He recalled dry heaving from the strong smell and puking the first few times until only bile would come up.

Orphaned at the age of 11, he was scouted by the secret sect of the church that specialized in disposing of vampires.

He trained. And trained. And trained.

Raphael would never forget the image of the vampire consuming his family. The scene burned his eyes, and the feeling of helplessness carved a deep scar in his heart.

Never. Never. Never again.

He chanted.

Over. And over. And over again.

And somewhere along the way, the trauma turned into a twisted joy as he revelled in the feeling of driving the stake through the vampire's heart.

Retribution.

Ahh... so this was what retribution felt like.

He was hooked on this feeling.

As he faced the vampire now, Raphael's heart pumped blood into his head. The beating of his heart thrummed in his ears.

He propelled forward, the wooden stake poised to strike its heart.

"Kekekeke." The vampire continued to giggle. "I do enjoy playing with my food, though master would be angry if I take too long."

Raphael swung his short sword, and the vampire deflected the attack with its claws. "Is that all you got, boy?"

The vampire grabbed the front of Raphael's collar. "Too slow, boy."

Raphael smirked. He dropped the short sword and grabbed the vampire's wrist.

"Huh?" The vampire's face wilted as it tried to free itself from Raphael's grasp.

"My Lord. Hear my plea. Deliver this sinner from evil." Raphael said in a murmur. His body was enveloped in golden light.

Growling, the vampire brought its other hand to crush Raphael's head.

"Obfula," Raphael whispered.

"AHHHHHHHHHHH!" The vampire screamed.

Black blood spewed from its body, coating Raphael's white uniform in stripes.

"WHAT DID YOU DO?" The vampire bellowed as its severed arms laid on the ground. "SHIT! SHIT!"

"Divine retribution." Raphael grinned and drove the wooden stake into the vampire's eye.

"GAHHHHH!"

Raphael kicked the vampire's chest. Its ribs gave away from the force of his kick.

"If I wasn't in a rush to kill your Queen–" Raphael pressed his full weight on the vampire's chest and the vampire spat out blood, dotting the hem of Raphael's white pants. "–I would've made you suffer for every innocent person you've callously slaughtered."

"Th-The Q-Queen?" The vampire spluttered out before it coughed out a cackle. "Y-you fool–"

Raphael stabbed the vampire's heart.

With one last cough, the vampire's red eyes dulled.

He scanned the room; five vampires were fighting his men. Raphael hoped they weren't stragglers and the Queen of the Vampires was still here.

Cursing inwardly, he was about to go ahead and search the castle but stopped when he heard the anguish scream of another of his man.

'Boy, you're too soft,' the Bishop whispered in Raphael's mind.

Raphael had no response to that.

Clicking his tongue, he pulled out the wooden stake from the dead vampire and joined the fray.

He did not wish to bury any more bodies today.

"Sir, I don't sense any more Vampires in here." The vice-captain, Paul, said. He combed through his rustic brown hair and cringed from the hardened blood gelling his hair together.

"You and Sam divide into groups and search every corner of this damn castle," Raphael ordered.

"And you, sir?" Paul asked.

Raphael raised a brow. "I'll be fine on my own."

Paul gave a dead-panned expression.

Smirking, Raphel's knuckles tapped Paul's shoulder. "Come on, you know I'll be fine. The faster we end this, the better."

Paul furrowed his brows. After a few seconds, his shoulders dropped, and he let out a long-suffering sigh. "You better not die, Raph."

All pretense of rank and order vanished between them.

"You know I'll only drop dead after killing all of these bastards." Raphael beamed a bright smile before turning on his heel. "I'll check the west wing."

"You better not take on the Queen by yourself!" Paul called out.

Raphael waved his hand dismissively. "Yes, yes. I'll make sure to scream for help."

"God help me..." Paul mumbled.

Raphael quietly snickered as he jogged up the grand staircase and turned left. There were rows of rooms, some with doors and some with barely a door intact. He poked his head in each room. They were all empty.

'Come on, show yourself.' He glared at another empty room.

Each time he checked the empty rooms, his heart sank lower. He knew that the Queen escaped during the fray. The vampires were probably buying time for their Queen.

"DAMN IT!" Raphael slammed his fist against the wall, and the wall concaved from the force.

'Too weak, boy, too weak...' the Bishop's voice taunted in his head.

"I can't give up now." Grounding his teeth, he continued to search for the elusive Queen.

The Secret Sect of Vampire Hunters had been waiting for this moment for over a century. This was the first time they received even a breath of the Vampire Queen's whereabouts.

Raphael knew he was getting desperate when he dropped to his knees to check under the bed. He paused, then rested his forehead against the floor. "What the hell am I doing. As if the Queen of Vampires is hiding under the bed."

He rubbed the bridge of his nose. There was one more room before he checked the west wing thoroughly. He prayed to the Lord that the Vampire Queen would be sitting pretty while waiting to be stabbed in the chest.

One could dream, right?

He kicked down the door, and it was an abandoned nursery. The crib lost one of its legs, and a wooden toy horse splintered in half. The large window was covered in grime and cobwebs. Sunlight fettered through it.

Raphael sighed.

Before the disappointment settled, he took in a deep breath of musty air. He coughed. He shouldn't have taken a deep breath.

Regardless, he couldn't give up now. Perhaps one of his men had already found the Queen and held her captive.

With a renewed vigour, he marched out of the lifeless room.
