Chapter 18
Bang bang bang…
Bang bang bang…
Bang bang-
"North!" I shout, as I jolt upright in bed.
-bang
I have to swim north. Wait, what? No, where am I? Where's Lina?
I look over to the other side of the large four poster bed to see Lina's spot empty. Bright light shines through the open windows of the fancy high end Tunis hotel room that Nadia insisted we rent.
Bang bang bang
I rub my eyes, and regretfully tumble out of the silky soft sheets with a grown. I slip on a robe and sleepily drag myself over to the bedroom door.
Bang bang bang
"What?!" I shout, in frustration as I throw open the door. To my disappointment, I'm face to face with Nadia's beaming smile.
Uggh.
"Good morning sleeping beauty! Well, it's actually afternoon, but I hope you slept well!" Nadia grins at me. She wears a short white sundress with little blue flowers embroidered on it. Her hair freshly curled into delicate beachy waves. She wears a light face of makeup with bright pink blush and light blue eyeshadow.
"Why do you have to knock so loud?" I grumble.
"To wake you up, of course! You just came out of a magically induced coma, there's going to be some lingering effects. Dihya said I'd need some dancing dwarves to get you out of bed. I thought she was joking, but one or two more knocks and I might have tried a dance or two myself!" Nadia giggles.
I scowl down at the small woman standing before me. "Where's Lina?"
"She woke up early and went out to get some shopping done." Nadia leans in close to whisper to me. "Probably out buying you jewelry. You're welcome for that!" Nadia winks.
Nadia grabs my hand and drags me out into the fancy dining room of the suite. "C'mon, I brought you breakfast!" She shouts.
Nadia drags me along, grumbling and complaining the whole way, until she finally forces me down into a large wooden chair at an elegantly carved wooden dining table. A crystal chandelier hangs overhead, glistening in a small stream of sunlight from a nearby window.
Nadia sits down across from me and pulls two clay bowls out of a brown paper bag, sliding one over to me. I remove the lid on mine to see it filled with a brown paste, with nuts, figs, and dates on top.
"What is this?" I ask, suspiciously.
"Bsissa!" Nadia replies enthusiastically. "It's like ground up cereals mixed with olive oil to form a paste, then spiced. I like to add honey to mine!" Nadia giggles as she squeezes a glob of honey from a plastic tube onto her bowl.
I hesitantly take a bite. "Wow, this is delicious!"
At least she isn't trying to poison me…
"Of course it is! Don't act so surprised, sheesh! I wouldn't feed my new friend anything bad!" Nadia fake scowls at me.
Yea, friend. Right…
"Thanks…" I mumble.
"So, are you ready for your first lesson?"

I nearly choke on my brown paste. "Excuse me? Lesson for what?"
"Magic lessons, of course!" Nadia giggles, her mouth full of Bsissa. She grins at me, globs of the thick brown paste clinging to her front teeth.
"I already know how to use magic." I scowl at my new 'friend'.
"I know, but Lina was telling me how you wanted to go to a magic school before the federation shut them all down. She thought maybe I can teach you some more advanced techniques!" Nadia happily smiles across the table at me.
"My magic is plenty advanced already, thank you!" I return to my food, hoping the small air channeller will drop the subject.
Nadia disappointments me. "Yea, I'm sure the Lua sized dent in the Mediterranean seabed is very impressive. Only a super talented, mega advanced water channeler could get the velocity to create such an impressive, advanced impact." Nadia laughs, spaying Bsissa across the table.
I dodge a chunk of the brown paste flying my way. "That was just an accident! Look, I appreciate the offer, but we're basically the same age. I'm sure I know everything you know!" I fold my arms, and glare at Nadia.
Nadia on the other hand still hasn't stopped laughing. She takes a moment to get it all out of her system. "Right." She says with a sigh. "I'm sure you do. So why don't we just talk about it then? You share some of your published research, and I'll share some of mine! We can compare notes. Maybe even co-author a stud-" Nadia breaks down into a fit of uncontrolled laughter. She nearly falls out of her chair as she holds her sides, her chest heaving. "I'm sorry, I can't-"
It's at that exact moment that Lina walks in.
"Hello!" She joyfully declares her presence, setting a handful of shopping bags onto the table.
"Lina!" I shout, jumping up to run over to my vampire. I push myself close into her arms, and glare at Nadia as Lina wraps me in a tight hug.
Lina pulls away from me. "Sounds like you two are getting along well!"
Nadia is still holding her sides, laughing. "Yea, great!" She struggles to say, giving Lina a shaky thumbs up.
"So, how's the magic lessons going?" Lina smiles down at me, holding my waist.
"They're not happening!" I involuntarily stamp my foot. "I don't need magic lessons from her!" I declare, tilting my chin up at my vampire.
Lina's eyes narrow at me. I can tell she's reading my emotions. She looks at me, then to Nadia. "Seriously?"
Nadia shrugs and tosses her hands up in the air.
Lina looks into my eyes, but I only pout up at her before looking away to stare at a wall.
"Could you, uh, give us a sec Nadia?"
Nadia nods.
"Come with me." Lina says, taking my hand. She leads me into the master bedroom, and drops my hand as she closes the door. I expect anger, but feel none of it.
Lina calmly walks over to the bed, and sits on the edge of it. "Come here." She says in a firm, commanding tone.
I instinctually obey, and timidly shuffle over to her. I go to sit next to her, but she stops me.
"No. Here." She commands, patting her lap.
My breath catches in my chest. I hesitate.
"Sit." She orders.
