Chapter 16: V2C1 – High School 2nd-Year Start!

*whisper*

*whisper*

"No way! That Ai Nakano is coming to our school!? What are the odds!!!"

"She's on hiatus for idol work for this, I wonder what's going through her mind? Does she really just want to finish high school? And why our high school out of all of them?"

"Maybe there's a boy she likes here..."

"Stop dreaming. It's the famous Ai Nakano you know? Known worldwide as a prodigy, she's way different from us normal people."

"I hope I can become her friend..."

I kept last year's school supplies including my uniform safe and sound in my room, so I had no problem scrounging around and finding it again. I slipped everything on and into my bag nostalgically. The first day of high school 2nd-year starts today, and I'm about to head off for the entrance ceremony. I'd say I'm a completely different person than who I was in my 1st-year, I did become a [Magical Girl] after all. 

"Then, I'm off."

I said it to no one in particular since Yoru was coming with me. Yoru has the ability to hide the presence of things (ability not magic related) so sticking by me without being noticed should be all good. Yoru will also be able to cover the presence of mana left by the [Core Grenades] I'm carrying on me in Akito form just in case. The mana filling the [Cores] is abnormal since they were made by pushing just the right of mana into them so that they would be easy to break. My own mana is barely noticeable in that form in contrast to Aki so I should be fine in that regard. 

I walked out the door refreshingly and made my way to school on the same old normal and lonely route.

When I arrived at the school gate, a crowd of people was squished together. I wonder what the fuss is about...? I shift my body past some people so I could get into the school and saw her. The girl I ran into recently, idol and [Magical Girl], Ai Nakano. She lightly waved and smiled to the people around her professionally while a path was created in the sea of flesh. I heard that she went on hiatus from work to go to high school, but our high school? Why? Well, not that I care too much. I'm the type of person who isn't crazy about idols and just recognizes their talent, like Ayame. Merging with the air, I shuffle into the school, and into the entrance ceremony hall. Breathing a big sigh of relief,

"This is a pain. Everybody's going crazy because an idol came to our school. It probably won't die down either, there might even be reporters who come to observe...what a pain!"

It's not like Ai Nakano's existence itself is a pain...actually in my supposedly normal high school life right now, it's a big upset! I just hope I don't get involved with her in any way at school...

The yawn-worthy entrance ceremony finished uneventfully and I went up to my assigned classroom of 2-A. Upon entering the room, most people were already in. But...there seems to be a ball of bodies surrounding one seat...don't tell me. In the middle of that moshpit was a girl with black swept bangs and short hair wearing a school uniform that accentuated her charm perfectly, Ai Nakano happily chatting away. She's in my class? Most boys would scream out, 'lucky!' but I'm indifferent. Ignoring the noise, I went up to the front board and checked my assigned seat...let's see close to the middle row to the side. I head to my specific seat, but...

"Are you serious? Next to her?"

My seat is next to Ai Nakano. I'm pretty sure I used a lifetime of luck on something that I didn't need. Can I refund? Well, let's just go with a greeting...never mind there's someone sitting on my seat. I tiredly move towards that person,

"U-um...that's my seat..."

"Haa!?"

The person with sharp looks, a loose uniform, and blue-dyed hair turned to me irritated. Did I do something to make you that angry?

"Tatsumi, get out of his seat, it's rude you know?"

"I know I know."

Now I remember, this person is Tatsumi Yamamoto, the impulsive guy who I made a mental note to always stay away from in 1st-year. Tatsumi got up from my chair reluctantly and got into another position close to Ai's seat.

"This is a pretty interesting situation isn't it?"

Yoru whispered into my air mechanically.

"What about it is interesting?"

"Use your mana-eyes. You should be able to pull it off as Akito for a split second right?"

"Hmm?"

Now that I think about it, something was weird with Ayame recently. I wonder...

My eyes enhanced to the point of being able to see the flow of mana for a moment. What I saw next surprised me, 7 of the people (including Ayame) around Ai Nakano were shrouded in complex twisting mana and a lot of it. Just like that day...

Who are these people? With Ai Nakano as a reference for a [Magical Girl], these guys are way different. Some of them are even boys so where did they get such power? The people I could see overflowing were people of who I know the full names. 

Ryosuke Hikaru is the object of envy for all high school boys, surrounded by beauty and capable in many regards. Sports, smarts, and looks...he has it all. 

Tatsumi Yamamoto. A wild and frivolous man who hung around Ryosuke often though I don't know the reason. I'm not good with these kinds of people.

Yui Saegusa. The person talking at the closest distance to Ai right now. A cold beauty known for being leagues above the rest. She boasts magnificent grades and talents that would make you question if her abilities were fit for this high school. 

Ayame Suzuki. My childhood friend whose been suspicious as of late. I need to somehow crank an answer out of her but I feel like I might step on a huge landmine.

Rino Fujiwara. She's short, energetic, and naturally loved by the class. She isn't loved yet by this class but she will definitely be soon with her bubbliness.

Sato Shiraishi. A guy I never really talked to since he was associated with Tatsumi and faded into the background like me. Yet he's happily talking away unreserved with the group...

Satomi Hayase. A kind and caring girl who follows Ryosuke around, even an outsider like me can tell she's drowning in love. The dense Ryosuke doesn't even notice...poor her. 

Anyways, these 7 people are covered head to toe in pure presence. This isn't the level of your average high schooler. What's going on? I think to myself deeply as I ignore the fuss around Ai Nakano to my right. It should die down when classes start hopefully...

Rino Fujiwara was chatting away happily with her friends and the newly acquainted Ai Nakano introduced by Yui. 

"She really is a normal girl..."

She muttered so that no one could hear. But, there was something that bothered her, something that was not normal. She thought hard,

"Did that boy over there just use magic? I wasn't paying attention so it might be my imagination but...something's off. I guess I'll keep tabs on him for now."

Rino caught the quick moment of Akito's mana manipulation. The seeds of doubt were planted in her mind.

The tiring day of classes completed, and the 7 suspicious people scrambled out of the room together. This is my chance! After a bit, I went up to follow them. They would notice me if I stayed right where they were talking to eavesdrop, and since they probably have supernatural abilities, they might be able to detect me. So, let's just casually walk past them...

...made it. I successfully passed by them without notice. But, what is the point of that you ask? How is that going to help me determine the source of their power?

"Yoru, give it to me."

"Yes~"

Yoru began to replay the conversation of the group that I walked past. Yoru has enhanced hearing with 'super-advanced alien microphones' and recorded the voices so I could eavesdrop without notice in a short time.

"--find a way to [Demon Lord] Vetheris."

"Yeah, I don't even have a clue where to start."

"He's largely weakened so it'll be hard..."

The short bit I got from walking past them came to a close. What? [Demon Lord] Vetheris? Weakened? It's like a fantasy...

Wait, what are they even talking about? As expected, they're hiding something big...in the first place, I've never heard of a monster called the [Demon Lord]. I confirmed it with Yoru, it doesn't know either. More mysteries float to my head as I walk home with heavy footsteps.

"Where could Vetheris be?"

Ryosuke turned his head over and over in his room.

"Onii-chan~ dinnertime."

He lightly spoke back,

"Okay, coming."

Ryosuke stood up to face his middle school-aged sister with long brown hair coming down her sides. Her big round blue eyes were similar yet softer than Ryosuke's. While pushing the thoughts of the [Demon Lord] aside, he went with his sister downstairs to the dining room.
