Chapter 17: V2C2 – Rising Tensions

Ai Nakano:

Arriving at the school where the press stands outside for her every day, as usual, she goes inside through the large gates. The students are off the initial shock of her debut and don't crowd around her so much anymore, but her presence is still very much stimulating for them. Especially in her Class 2-A, there are many people who come to talk to her. Things like 'want to eat lunch today' or 'want to hang out after school.' These kinds of things were not hated by Ai, in fact, she liked being invited to do 'normal' things with high schoolers.

But, there were 7 people that were closest to her that shut out others unintentionally. This was the hero party, introduced to her by her acquaintance, Yui Saegusa, who was one of the reasons why she came to high school. They were a lively bunch, thought Ai. She doesn't yet know that they're returnees but she has hung out with them quite a few times.

Anyways, there is one person that she's specifically looking at after 2 weeks of being at school. That was, the lonely boy sitting next to her, Akito Harada. In her eyes, Akito is a completely normal, bland, and free schoolboy. The epitome of what she yearned for, an existence with so much free time and privilege that it's troubling. Recently, she's been reaching out to Akito in the form of small greetings and comments which he receives and responds to indifferently. Even more recently, she began to tease him a little.

"Let's give him a surprise today..."

She liked watching Akito's completely reasonable reactions. You could say that she was an odd character...

As she gently walked towards the Akito eating alone in the schoolyard, she reached out her hand to give a slight scare. He was slightly dozing off since last night's homework was a long one. Yoru could've filled it out for him but how does that help him learn? A mischievous smile came onto her face as she approached...

Yoru didn't respond to it as it wasn't a threat, but Akito was shaken greatly. 

"Hyaa!"

Akito grabbed the arm that was about to startle him fiercely. But, he let go once he realized what he had done to Ai Nakano.

"Ah, sorry Ai---I mean Nakano-san."

"I-It's fine..."

Ai shrunk back slightly at the sudden release of intimidation. Was Akito always this sharp? Ai thought, those instincts and battle-worn pressure...are not something belonging to a normal high schooler. She doesn't remember him doing any martial arts either. Her image of Akito up until that point shattered. As his body loosened, Ai talked again,

"Well, I'll be going then."

Ai took her leave while Akito looked at her back sorrowfully behind. In her mind, Ai vowed,

"Pretending to be normal...fufufu...I'll reveal your secret, Akito Harada!"

Akito held his head for what he just did in shame.

Akito Harada:

I've checked the whole school, but it seems that only those 7 people in Class 2-A have that uniqueness of mana. So, what are they? For these two weeks, I've been quietly walking past them during their private conversations...even if they talk in whispers, Yoru can pick it up. What I've learned from their chats is that they're looking for a [Demon Lord] Vetheris who is weakened and has been defeated by them before. I've also learned that they got their powers from a place called [Orvinus], though I don't know where that place is located. They couldn't have gone far out of Japan either right?

Anyways, the most important piece of information that's the most useful right now, is that they're going to hunt [Curses] on the weekend. It seems that they want to continue testing their power and wipe out some [Curses] which I'm all for. But, this is how I can get all the answers I seek. If I find them as [Magical Girl Aki] while they're killing [Curses], then my presence won't but strange correct? With this, I can ask them,' who are you?' Hopefully, they'll tell me, a fellow supernatural power user. I might even be able to help with their [Demon Lord] situation. I'd want to help Ayame's friends if I could, right?

With this plan in mind, I continued on with my mundane 2nd-year start. It isn't exactly mundane though since a certain idol Ai Nakano is messing with me. Really, why me? I don't know...

Hero Party:

"Should we tell Ai that we're heroes from another world?"

"You think she'd believe us? Also, she's affiliated with the government so she might be obligated to report to them..."

"So, who's that guy she's always talking to, the one who sits next to her. Harata or something~he's your friend right Ayame?"

"O-Oh, yeah, maybe they're acquainted somehow. I don't think that she would find interest in a boring guy like him."

"Hou~ well whatever. Anyways, I wonder how strong Ai is as a [Magical Girl]. I haven't seen her fight, but Rino said her mana is above average..."

"We can't really ask her to show us can we?"

"Maybe if I show her my power she'll fall for me!"

"In your dreams Tatsumi."

That weekend, on the day of the hero party's agreed [Curse] subjugation, they met up at the same park at the same time. However, they had their weapons and partial armor this time around. Well, if anyone saw 7 high schoolers in fantasy cosplay, they'd assume something suspicious is going on but with Rino's help, they could identify [Curses] and avoid routes with people in them so that their identities wouldn't get found. Just in case, they bought cheap masks from the department store that covered the lower half of the face since anything more would hinder vision. 

"Alright, [Curse] subjugation start!"

The hero party began roaming around Tokyo, looking for [Curses]. With the magic formulas for [Physical Enhancement] engraved directly into their minds, travel was fast. This is what is known as a spell in [Orvinus]. The Goddess [Ervia]'s blessings are magical formations engraved into one's mind that can be called upon through will or chant. This method is much easier than engraving into the body like [Focals] did for [Magical Girls]. With this connection and the fact that the magic formations of [Orvinus] were more advanced, the possibilities of mana usage were greater.

This includes spells of many kinds like directly shooting formatted mana or specific searching that would be hard to do without the proper formation. Of course, it can be done with pure mana and will but an absurd amount is needed in that case which is not plausible. Anyways, in [Orvinus], there is a system (must be in the world to be a part of) for receiving the Goddess's blessing in order to use these special magic-related abilities and have the engraved formula in your mind. It's given when your abilities reach a certain threshold or are lucky and you visit a Church.

The heroes were favored by [Ervia], so being blessed with powers constantly was no surprise. The twisting mana that Akito can see in them is the power of spells granted by the Goddess in [Orvinus], but he and Yoru don't know that.

Finally, the group found a [Curse] and prepared to fight it, but they didn't know that the [Magical Girl Aki] was heading straight for them with Yoru's help.

??? POV:

"Arrghhh...get out of my head!!!"

The voice was clear and persuasive, like a demon beckoning to the dark.

"Fufufu--you're going to be my vessel...so that I can return to my old power. Nothing will stop me, and I'll end the heroes blessed by [Ervia] this time for sure..."

"I-I don't know what you're going on about or what you are but...get OUT!!!"

A searing headache assaulted her mind.

"We can't have that now~ sleep my vessel. Rejoice that your body is going to be used by this great personage."
