Chapter 28: V2C13 – A Hero Aki

Akito Harada:

It's been a week since I was attacked by that crazy Nodoka, but now I'm a bit calmer and have internalized everything. My sister, Airi Harada is also the genius detective Emma Enderich and a vampire. One who survived that accident years ago involved with the government. Now that I know, I'm not going to rush into the facility and take back Airi or contact her. She makes her own choices. I'll see how things play out for now, but really, I don't know what to do and don't know how to feel about it all. With similarly minded youths, I will continue to attend school...

In the tranquil classroom, 8 students shuffle out inconspicuously. The heroes and Ai Nakano, skipping class together?

"Yoru?"

"I sense something intense on the school roof."

"Hmm...that's why. I guess Ai knows about how they're heroes then. So, what is it exactly on the roof?"

"I don't know, but it's a bit worse than a [Curse]."

"Is that so...well they'll be fine since they're strong."

"I see."

"...Well, I am a bit curious. Maybe it's that Vetheris guy they're chasing. I don't see a reason for Ai to help in that case though...no she's really stubborn and nice so maybe..."

"Akito, their magical presences have disappeared."

"Huh? That's...weird. Let's check it out!"

"So this is how it goes...let's go Akito. I'll hide you."

"Thanks."

Yoru and I raced out the door not so inconspicuously and hurried up the continuous flights of stairs. Eventually, we reached the entryway to the roof.

Telepathy is convenient. Anyways,

"What is this Yoru?"

"I don't know, but it looks like a film of formatted mana...a barrier of some kind."

"Judging from the fact we can't sense mana from the outside, maybe it's a barrier to hide...no what would be the purpose."

"Look, the heroes are on death's door."

"Eh!?"

The 7 heroes including Ai were strewn bloodied on the floor while a misty black humanoid danced in the air and a familiar snake creepily wiggled.

"We have to help them..."

"Wait, I can't know the barrier's effects without analyzing the actual magic formation. it must be hidden somewhere."

"But, they're about to die! To that little girl over there..."

Presumably Vetheris.

"...just wait."

"Sorry partner!"

I can't bear to see Ayame's desperate form any longer.

"Don't worry I'll properly cover myself with darkness."

I slipped Sino's ring on and went to [Transform].

"Wait!"

I entered the mana sealing barrier and my dark cover instantly dispersed...f*ck.

"Well, this is awkward..."

The presences inside the barrier turned to me. 

"The barrier is magic, right Yoru? [Mana Drain]."

"..."

"..."

"It seems that this mana isn't good to absorb. I have already determined that this is a mana sealing barrier. The formatted mana is for all purposes an 'anti-mana' created by the formation so absorbing that kind of intent will just make you weaker."

"That's not good at all..."

"Indeed. What will we do?"

"We're going to help them obviously, but my identity might be busted. It is pretty weird for Aki to be wearing a high school boy's uniform..."

"Hmm, how troublesome."

"I can't reach Sino either, doesn't look like she can manifest or help this time. Even after all that practice..."

"What are you whispering to yourself about over their [Magical Girl Aki]?"

Not the voice I was expecting the [Demon Lord] to have, it isn't distorted and deep like last time. She has floppy brown hair and lustrous blue eyes...with the features of a middle schooler.

"I don't know everything about who you are and what you want to do...but I can tell that you're the bad guy here."

"So we meet again. Come to aid the heroes...or to join me after seeing this display?"

I looked around to the vomit-worthy landscape covered in blood, I guess demons from other worlds have values I will never understand. Heroes and the [Demon Lord], truly a fantasy. 

It seems I can't use my physical enhancement or weapon manifestation. The movement of mana is being constricted...but...

[Neutralizer: Knife]

I begin to take strides towards Vetheris anyway. 

"Interesting, let's see what you can do [Ethereal Princess of Darkness]!"

I hold the sleek knife in my right, it's honestly quite long but the weight is not a bother.

"Hya!"

I slash at the incoming [Asogus]'s missed head and tear out its left eye while avoiding the splattered blood. I use that momentum to jump off of it and take a step closer to the girl while utilizing my barriers.

"[Soviath]."

The black misty person twirled into view and I switched to handgun mode since I don't think it's cuttable. I stopped for a second and pressed down on the trigger causing a flash of searing energy to pour out ferociously in a single wavelength. The so-called [Soviath] was pierced in the side, not the best hit since my mana eyes were neglected, but it immediately reformed itself.

"Is that some kind of ghost spirit, it feels like Sino..."

I meant the body, the behavior couldn't be compared at all. Anyways, since I can't hurt it, let's just pass on through...

"Uuuuuufuuuu...."

Looks like I can't ignore it. The haze approached me fast and before I could react, its hand was on my face. The next second, my vision went dark.

"How can it use magic inside the barrier!?"

I heard Yoru's calm voice beside me, how reliable.

"Remember what Sino talked about. The mana of a realized spirit is its very body itself. So, if these magic-based 'summoned familiars' can somehow exist in this sealing space, utilizing their own mana as body parts with a will can make an effect is possible. This would be only possible by spirits though. The moment you approached, this supposed [Soviath] disconnected a part of its body onto you to create the illusion of pure black."

"Is that so...to think that a spirit would go along with such a reckless strategy...no I feel like this isn't just any normal spirit. At any rate, Yoru, help me through this one."

"Yes."

I closed my eyes and fastened the handgun to my belt. Even without vision, I have another set of eyes.

"Let's go."

I ran straight forward. Before, I was in front of Vetheris so I should eventually reach her through the darkness...

"Keep going."

Yoru began giving out instructions. Luckily, I'm not fighting blind and alone.

"Attack coming from behind you, that snake. Use your [Hexad Barriers]."

"Done."

A few of them broke but they'll regenerate shortly. A gush of wind could be felt on my back.

"The spirit thing is at your side...wait why are you running backward?"

"This must be that [Soviath]'s doing..."

I begin actually running backward.

"Am I going forward?"

"Yes..."

This is trippy. Darkness magic is the one attribute that most affects the mind and so I guess my sense of direction was temporarily tangled. I kept on going like that for a few more moments before [Soviath] realized my counter.

"The mist is right in front of you!"

"Chance da!"

I lunge and grasp whatever's in front of me and activate [Mana Drain]. A spirit, whose body is composed of mana can't resist this power...hopefully I don't absorb too much of this newly termed 'anti-mana' though."

"You've completely stolen its body, now continue straight forward...Vetheris hasn't moved a step."

He's a cocky one, isn't he? Anyways, I felt that the sinister spirit's mana was completely absorbed by me. [Mana Drain] is one hell of a power.

"Wait, its effects are gone."

My sense of direction and vision were back to normal, I guess defeating the main body dispersed what branched off of it.

I pull [Neutralizer] from my belt, it'll be effective on all the players of this field now. Now, 

"Let's defeat ourselves a [Demon Lord]."

I ran briskly and closed some distance to the sneering girl who was silently questioning how I could sense in the dark. I'm not confident in my aim with this handgun from here without mana so I guess I have to get even closer. But, 

"Yoru."

I aim the gun behind my back without looking. I'm about to skewer an approaching giant snake with power.

"Angle the shot down a bit...a bit more up...okay now fire."

Trusting Yoru's words I shot off over my shoulder, which was surprisingly exhilarating...I wonder how cool I look...maybe I just look weird. But anyway, [Asogus] was just showing too big of an opening when thinking I wasn't focused on it. Yoru confirmed the clean headshot like last time. Is this really [Demon Lord] difficulty? Well, I guess mana is being denied...

I readjust the gun to my front and prepare to aim at a now in-range Vetheris.

"W...ait..."

I hear the low and slightly audible groans of pain further away...that is...Ryosuke Hikaru. He doesn't look too beat up, but he's sweating like crazy and his bloodshot eyes are creeping me out.

"Th..at's my sis...ter. Sa...ve he--"

Before he could finish he grasped his head with both hands tightly. A migraine? Bad timing for a hero. Well anyway, if that's his sister I definitely don't want to hurt her. I had thought of the possibility of Vetheris possessing the girl since it could talk through [Asogus] before. Perhaps those were different kinds of magic though...

"Got it."

I affirmed Ryosuke and dashed to his sister, now Vetheris. My intimidating beating figure was on full display (with an out-of-place male uniform). Even the [Demon Lord] stepped back at the imposing presence. An ethereal princess of darkness twirling through space and defeating all obstacles with no loss in speed.

"You low...lowly HUMAN! It makes no difference if my pets are slain...I still have power in this space!"

I had a really bad feeling about what was about to happen...I set up the remaining [Hexad Barriers] in my front to protect me.

"Suffer the pain of my wrath, [Soul Breaking Phantasm]."

"..."

"..."

"Hm? What did she do Yoru?"

"I didn't detect anything happen."

"Why...why you...WHY ARE YOU ALRIGHT!? Impossible, natural resistance to mental attacks...no...I haven't observed your true form? But, illusion magic is impossible...how...how....HOW!?"

It was idiotic for me to wait! I glide in like a hurricane and grab Vetheris's arm with a sturdy grip to the forearm. If she tries anything, I'll sweep her off her feet with a throw.

"What are you doi--!?"

[Mana Drain]

I doubt that Vetheris had always been Ryosuke's sister. So, if she was possessed through some type of 'spell,' I just need to remove the fuel or formation itself don't I? Sometimes I think of [Mana Drain]'s true absurdity.

"Impossible, my connection is fading...this can't be happening!"

"Leave this body, Vetheris!"

"You bastard...AKI! To think that you would be a student of the same school..."

"Hmph."

I felt every shred of mana collect into myself as I released my grip. Tears flowed down Hinami's eyes as I felt the flow of mana draining stop completely. She fell to the floor, clearly exhausted after a second of dazedness. With this, I had claimed victory against [Orvinus]'s [Demon Lord] Vetheris.
