Chapter 49: V3C17 – Chances

Sato POV:

Since the day I was summoned to [Orvinus], I knew that I didn't have combat potential. I was a scaredy-cat, and not good with my body or magic. So, what did I do so that my friends wouldn't abandon me like those novels because I'm useless?

Well, actually in those, the MC then usually goes on to become super OP and get revenge but I don't have hopes that those tropes would work here.

Anyways, so that they would find a use for me, I educated myself on the world. I took the initiative to learn things like alchemy, blacksmithing, magic theory, etc. Luckily, I succeeded and was still acknowledged as a world-saving hero alongside them after helping on the journey.

But still, every time a battle starts, my powerlessness comes into view. It rings and rings, my futility. I hate it, isn't that natural? So just once, let me aid you. Just once, grant me the power to. No...I'll make the opportunity myself...my weakness is my weapon! The fuel for my fire!

I rummage through my [Item Box] and pull out a chalky substance. After drawing out a memorized magic formula on the ground, I offer the stored mana [Cores] in my possession. [Curse] killing expeditions on Earth weren't meaningless...

After finishing the preparations, I readied myself for fulfilling my goals. I don't have conventional strength, and I might look unfit when next to these talents I call friends. But, I can step up when the time is right. And with this unfaceable enemy, the [Cursed One], my existence is still significant! For them to focus on him, I'll support, my best trait. The [Curses] climbing up to our position will definitely hinder this initiative. So, I'll make it so they can't enter! I'm pretty sure Satomi has a similar spell, but she's focused on buffing the team...I can't rely on it. I'll do my part, I'll push my goals,

"[Holy Barrier]!"

[Holy Barrier], the barrier that brings a holy wall of light in between two sides. It's particularly good at countering evil beings, or dark mana and magics. In exchange, other elements pass through with ease. It's effective on monsters, not much for other intelligent beings besides demons.

"Sato...this barrier!"

"Thank you!"

I give a thumbs-up gesture back. This is my existence as Sato Shiraishi.

Aki POV:

Hours have passed since Sato set up the barrier, and it did a good job, allowing us to focus on the [Cursed One]. And through that, we learned, 

"We can't beat him."

Every attack is received and regenerated, he then responds back with overwhelming physical might. All of us have wounds...open ones, and bone fractures. Hayase-san is being overworked, and the barrier is about to snap. All of our mana capacities are at the limit, which is expected from the heroes and Ai. But, I have way more mana so I shouldn't be lacking...though I have been fighting intensively nonstop for the past two days.

My muscles are screaming in agony, while my mana has drained to its near end. I can't even summon a decent [Realizer], I can only maintain my super strength. Well, for now, I'm getting by with [Neutralizer]. But, our side of the clash is completely on the defensive.

To make matters worse, since my [Hexad Barriers] are overheated, they will likely become nonfunctional if I push them more. Alien tech has its own limits. And Sino used up her mana in the fight against the army outside, currently in sleep mode...

I'm nearly out of [Core Grenades] too, there are only so many in my pockets! My fellow hero friends are also out of tricks, their power just can't reach the [Cursed One]. [Void Point] and [Heavenly Armament] can break through his thick defenses put up with force momentarily...until it just regenerates back. While assessing the situation and making plans in my head, I can only find one way to beat him now...

I need to somehow absorb his mana with [Mana Drain]. But, that'll take a considerable amount of time, and I also need to physically touch his body. These two feats together make for a nasty condition...how can I win this? I need to find an answer, everything depends on it. [Second Contact] will not happen, [Orvinus] will be saved, the screams...the blood...the bodies will be forgotten. My resolve was firm from the beginning, think back to the wills you've taken on. The demons, heroes, [Focals]...

My eyes narrow as strength gathers in my broken body. Blood gushes and structures creak, the pain is tolerable. I don't have any healing abilities, and I'm not used to this condition. But even so, I face forward with fire. I'll overcome you and fix everything...

"[Cursed One]!"

With [Neutralizer: Knife], I rushed forward skillfully for a wounded person, towards his idiotic expression. From his body, a glob of black sludge spits out, and I avoid it while taking a better position. From there, leaping at him, I aim for the head...

"Foolish human...!"

My lower chest is suddenly pierced by a black sprouted tail with broad and sturdy features. This guy's body is really outrageous. My mass is then flung to the floor away from him with a loud crash, my body tumbles as it tore into the stone. I churn out blood reflexively.

"Akito!!!"

I know you're frantic Ayame, but keep my identity secret, please! Not like there's anyone here to hear it...actually that Rinku is there. Well, it doesn't matter right now. More importantly, I'm in pain all over and fatally wounded...my consciousness is fading. I can't die yet though, I haven't done...

My sight turns dark and silence ensues. How ruthless.

My vision is restored in a familiar space, the [Divine Realm]. No body, just energy, and infinite white. Before I could speak,

"I know."

A deep voice rang through my mind. I recognize it, the God of Destruction. 

"Know what?"

"If I say I was told by Eurevos would you understand?"

"Helping us defeat the [Curses] huh..."

My imagined brow furrows.

"Last time...oh my other self from a different time. Well, I know you stole my blessing, but considering the circumstances, I think you should have at least something from me. [Ervia]'s are incompatible with you after all."

"So, what spells?"

"Since you use so much mana in attacks due to your inhuman amount, a lot of the spells we gods make don't apply well for you. I could grant you projectile magics or sword abilities but those wouldn't really turn the tide of battle would it?"

"True, the [Cursed One]'s regeneration is cheating..."

"So, I have a single ray, a single spell of hope for you."

"?"

"A unique spell I worked on called, [Senzai Kaihou] ([Latent Release])."

I got a bit excited.

"So, what are the effects? Mana usage?"

"It does what it says, releasing the power within yourself. The stored energy of your cells into physical strength, the pent up will of mana, your inner resolve. The mana usage is quite low, for you."

"Huh...how is it my hope?" 

"This spell allows you to release what's within you and break your limits. Even I don't know what lays beyond such limits, and as such, it may turn the tide of battle."

"Vague...but it's another card I have against the [Cursed One]."

"This formation, I bestow it to you, [Demon Lord Aki]."

He taps my mind...I feel a warm tingle.

"I'll send you back now, bring victory."

"You don't have to tell me. And..."

"Hm?"

"Thank you."

"...you're welcome."

My determination shines brightly.
