Chapter 6: V1C6 – The Perfect Catalyst

It's been a week since I became a [Magical Girl] from Yoru. We've established a pretty good routine too. I don't have school or tedious work so my entirety can be focused on striving to become a powerful [Magical Girl]. Though a boy with that dream is a bit weird, I'm also a girl now so I guess I'm clear?

Anyways, we've been going around the city, not too far from my apartment to defeat [Curses] and steal their mana. I hope that I'm at least saving some lives by taking out these things, it doesn't feel real to me yet though. After killing [Curses] relentlessly for a week, my mana pool, or the total amount of mana residing in my body, has risen to a pretty amazing level. I can allocate a lot more mana to my [Realizer] and body, strengthening them beyond what is normally possible. My movements can become sharper and my blade can become sturdier. My battle sense is growing too.

I've also been training in mana manipulation or moving mana with my will as well. This allows me to shift that amount to different parts if I so need, like if I wanted to focus on enhancing my upper body instead of my lower body. The self-taught way I train for this is pretty simple, I'll describe the process now,

First, you focus on your body's mana flow. It may be easier to close your eyes for this. When I internalized the flow of mana, I can see it twisting naturally around my body, that must be the effect of Yoru's engraved formations...

Other than that, I can feel a more raw power coming from deeper inside, this must be where most of the allocatable mana is. By reaching out with my mind, I can practice manipulating the mana within me and disperse and extend without worries. This only applies to inside my body though, I don't think I can shoot out fireballs or ice beams yet. Maybe with practice, I can...

Anyways, by recognizing my internal mana flow and shifting it to various places, I can improve my own manipulation of will. This is important since it is the focus of my fighting and it needs to be polished to the utmost limit! That is why I asked Yoru about mana manipulation tips today...

"I can't use mana."

"Hm? Really?"

"Yes, I simply don't have the capacity for it. Humans are perfect for it though, being prone to emotions and having strong desires."

"I see, but you at least should know some tips right? After all, you were able to put magic formations into me."

"That process was largely unrelated to my abilities. But, yes let's see, I have a few things I could tell you. The manipulation for 'mana' is not widely known by [Magical Girls] but seeing as you already know, it can't hurt if you know more. Firstly, your training of mana is on a good track. However, you're injecting willpower and directing pure mana, magic with no attribute at all."

"Attribute? Like in fantasy games?"

"Yes, you can bestow upon mana an attribute by your will. Things like fire, water, darkness, light, etc to make them stronger and produce more prominent effects. However, different attributes require the user to have affinities with that particular substance your attributing. These affinities are decided at birth by your subconsciousness so they are pretty unchangeable."

"So, I bestow an attribute to my mana by willing it to be and having a specific affinity...it sounds easy when you put it like that."

"It is quite simple, it's one of the foundations of utilizing mana."

"I see..."

"Do you want to try it? I think that testing it on your body might mess with it a bit so maybe try it through strengthening your cutlass?"

"Alright..."

I manifest [Realizer] in front of me and grasp at the hold. 

"Now, strengthen it normally with mana, but think of that mana as a torrent of the desired attribute. It should convert the mana by your will and produce an effect if you have an affinity. Well, even without affinity it's possible but it becomes more difficult to work with."

I concentrated some mana into the blade, making it sharper and more durable like the times I've done over and over before when fighting [Curses]. Then, I think of what attribute to bestow it...if it's magic, it has to be fire! I imagine the mana spreading over the sleek edge as a raging fire, I feel the presence of something heating up while closing my eyes. As I opened them, [Realizer] was wrapped in a thin layer of fire that looked like an extended candle flame. Is this...?

"Hmm, an immediate response. It seems you have an affinity with fire attribute magic."

In my mind I made a guts pose. If I can use fire as a weapon, I can become even stronger! As my thoughts lingered, the fiery blade extinguished, leaving the simmering blade in my hand. By the way, since [Realizer] is a weapon manifested from magic, it can also regenerate when my mana does (which naturally regenerates), so even if it breaks, there is no harm to me. 

"I guess I have another thing I have to practice now huh..."

"Strive to become a master at manipulating magic Aki."

"I will, Yoru!"

It's been two weeks since becoming a [Magical Girl]. My [Curse] killing abilities have been enhanced to a comfortable spot. I've killed enough to where my mana is growing at an unprecedented rate, well which's obvious after doing this nonstop. I eat and sleep well, but I don't need to rest my body as often as I should due to my increasing proficiency in body enhancement via magic. Also, that capacity will just keep growing as I take on stronger and stronger foes. The five wolves that I struggled to defeat immediately on the first day are like small fries to me now due to my training and [Mana Drain]. Really, I got the best ability I could ask for. Currently, I'm fighting a boar-like [Curse] that has an intense gaze and deadly charge...

I cut at the boar's side with [Fire Form Realizer: Dark Flame Enhancement], a shining white cutlass covered in a layer of muddy black flames. It looks somewhat profound and angelic...is what I thought.

The boar staggered slightly but the wound inflicted wasn't big. 

"Guurrroo!"

It prepared to charge straight into me. I can't take that thing's strength seriously head-on even with magic-based body enhancement. Then, I stepped to the side and created a burst of air from my palm, repelling me backward. All I did, was shove a large amount of wind attribute mana out of my body. This method of magic casting is wasteful, though I can do it with my large mana pool. It doesn't help that I have no affinity with the wind though.

The menacing boar charged and passed right by me. I barely escaped that attack...but now that yoour charge has halted, you're showing an opening! 

[Lightning Form Realizer: Black Lightning Enhancement]

My sword sparked slightly with black-colored electricity. My ability to bestow mana attributes and extend it to [Realizer] is still far from perfect, but layering it is manageable.

"Ha!"

I slash at the boar's other side, the black shining blade cuts through the fat body leaving severe burns. I can't tell perfectly though since the burns match the color of the [Curse]'s natural body. I nimbly got behind it and aimed my cutlass upwards,

[Fire-Lightning Form Realizer: Dark Flaming Thunder Enhancement]

This is my current best, stacking the mana attribute enhancements of the elements I have the most affinity for. My sword is clad lightly with extending lightning bolts and twisting flames colored darkly...

"Die!"

My cute voice contradicted my spoken words as I swung the dense mana sword down onto the [Curse]. I'm surprised my long hair hasn't gotten burnt yet...Anyways, as the sword fell, its body was diced as seared by heat. Its lower half was reasonably disfigured...

It then dispersed into the atmosphere, dropping a colorless stone in its absence. I felt the mana reserves in my body grow and I loosened my grip. Looking at my blade, It's slightly chipped, but no matter since I flow mana through and it immediately repairs itself.

"That mana attribute enhancement is doing wonders for my current firepower Yoru. Thanks for that."

"It's the result of your own work. It seems your working hard playing to your affinities in flame, lightning, and darkness."

These three elements are the attributes I succeed the most in. But, the last one isn't really supposed to be there. It kind of just naturally mixes in with my magic. The reason that I have an affinity with darkness is because of my ability [Mana Drain]'s properties. I've been constantly draining the mana from the evil beings called [Curses]. So, wouldn't it make sense that the mana that carries their will absorbed would be aligned with darkness? That seems to be the case...well it's another source of power so I won't complain. It just means that the flames and lightning I produce become black and sinister...I can't seem to not infuse my mana with darkness. Well, I also get a boost in darkness-related attributed mana so I guess it's a trade-off.

"Let's call it a day."

I call out to Yoru. It (Yoru is genderless) agrees and we walk back to my small apartment at an absurdly fast pace. Well, it would be for anyone without my level of magic-based physical enhancement.

"Hey Yoru, what can I do with these [Cores] I collected?"

"Well, without mana, you can't do much with it. Oh, well it does become a good catalyst for mana after being completely sucked dry."

"Catalyst?"

"It's good for mana transfers and absorption."

"Hm..."

I flow pure mana through the stone in my hand, it begins to shine white. My ability to manipulate pure mana isn't tainted by my own stolen black mana since it isn't a specific and definite effect I produce with mana. After pushing pure mana into the core haphazardly, it exploded, leaving nothing behind.

"What are you trying to do?"

"So that was an explosion of pure mana..."

I didn't hear what Yoru said as I lost myself in thought. A pure mana explosion was powerful, but it could be more powerful when subjected to the will of making it an attribute.

"Hey, Yoru. Your good at calculations right? How much mana can I stuff into this [Core] before it explodes?"

"Well, for that I need a couple of things. Show it to me first."

Yoru began examining the [Core] for its shape and density. Then, looking back at me, Yoru said,

"So? How much mana are you going to put into it per second?"

I don't know the correct units or specific measures so...I guess I'll just show it. I turned my finger up and began spouting mana from it at a constant pace. Also, mana flows at the same rate despite the applied attribute.

"Hmm, at that rate of mana insertion, and this [Core], in 4 minutes and 2 seconds will it be full and prone to exploding with more injected mana."

"Then, let's get to it."

"Hmm, why?"

"Just watch me."

For the next 4:02 minutes, I pushed fire attribute mana into the [Core] at the same rate. It turned an ugly black as it entered, well I'd say it was actually pretty beautiful. After completing it, I showed Yoru.

"You..."

"That's right, this is a makeshift bomb."

I threw the [Core] out the window boldly while injecting a bit of mana at the last moment. In the broad sky where my boosted throw took it, an explosion of dark flames burst out, leaving no pieces behind. If multiple of those are used, moderately strong [Curses] could be killed.

"You thought of something very interesting Aki. Using empty [Cores] made from [Mana Drain] as bombs, very innovative."

"Hehe, with this, my battle potential has risen!"

That night, I expended my mana to its limit by stuffing my collected [Cores] with the mana of various attributes. I left the calculation of timing all to Yoru, I doubt I could accomplish this without that ability anyway.
