Chapter 1: Book 1 – Chapter 1

Kenshi Kanae is a Knight with the prestigious title of ‘Storm Cat’. Even when she was a young child, she had gone to many dojos; defeating their best students with ease, without a single loss.

 

Kanae’s nickname originated from the way her ponytail waved through the air like a black cat’s tail, her lithe form swayed and danced gracefully as her twin Shortswords flowed through the air like silver curtains.

 

While her fighting form was violence incarnate, fitting her title perfectly -- her sleeping face was like that of an angel.

 

The curtains were parted and morning sunlight shone through, illuminating the slender form laying on the bed, clothing disheveled. Even so, she still slept, looking like a princess, showing no signs of waking. Her skin was so white that the sunlight seemed to cause her to glow.

 

Kanae’s long, black hair was spread out behind her head, like a pool of darkness. Her usual, stern face looked so innocent when she was so relaxed.

 

“Hey, wake up. Breakfast is ready.” Kenshi Kazuki reached down and shook her shoulders.

 

Kanae’s eyes suddenly opened, “Older brother! Welcome back…I haven’t seen you in so long~! Us Knights need to keep in contact.”

 

I am no longer just a Knight…Just as this sentence was about to come out of his mouth, Kazuki’s gaze fell on the back of his left hand. Branded into his skin was a golden, egg-shaped pattern.

 

This was an ‘Enigma’, an emblem from another world, which had changed Kazuki’s fate.

 

Kazuki glanced away as his sister began stripping -- her cheeks reddened slightly, but she didn’t mind her brother watching. She quickly walked over to her cupboard and took out a carefully folded and prepared uniform.

 

The female uniform of the Knight Division of the National Knight’s Academy: ‘Vindex’; it was a short-sleeved shirt with a miniskirt. It didn’t restrict movement, and distracted any male opponents.

 

After Kanae finished dressing, Kazuki felt relieved and sighed, “This kind of clothing suits you well.”

 

While Kanae was known as ‘Storm Cat’, Kazuki had also once had a nickname…but it was already something of the past.

 

“Your uniform suits you very well as well, big brother!” Kanae said, stepping forwards. She reached up and laid a small, slender hand on his cheek.

Kazuki’s uniform differed from Kanae’s, now that he was entering a different Division than his sister.

 

He was wearing a blazer over a white shirt. It gave off an atmosphere of high quality, having been made from Alchemical Silk -- which was very good at conducting Mana. There were small Gems embroidered in a pattern on the shirt, over his heart -- his belt was made from a rainbow-coloured metal called ‘Marble Metal’.

 

“A gentle older brother, coupled with a rich-looking uniform is really a wonderful combination.” Kanae said with a wide smile.

 

Kanae and Kazuki were only siblings in name.

 

Kazuki, who was orphaned, had been adopted by a prestigious family -- known for their sword-based martial art -- the Kenshi family.

 

Stepping back, Kanae attached two sheathed Shortswords onto her belt -- which was normal leather. She was long used to the heavy weight of the twin swords; she felt incomplete without them.

 

She turned to Kazuki, “Older brother…You won’t be bringing your sword?”

 

“Why would I bring it? I am no longer a student of the Knight Division.”

 

Kanae glared at the symbol on Kazuki’s left hand, “It’s all because of that damn Enigma!”

 

“Well, it’s already too late to talk about it…” Kazuki muttered.

 

The people who both had a natural talent for Magic, and were recognized by ‘Spirits’, would be awarded an Enigma on the back of their left hand -- it will appear at the age of fourteen, when their Mana Circuits are completed.

 

People chosen by the Spirits and awarded an Enigma had to enter the Magic Division. This was to study Magic, and form a contract with the Spirit who chose them -- and also to monitor Magic users, to reduce the number of Rogue Mages.

 

Kenshi Kanae is an extra-ordinary Knight, and her brother -- Kenshi Kazuki, is now a user of Summoning Magic.
