Because the temperature dropped low in the morning, a Spring mist appeared outside as the sun rose.

As though cutting through the haze, the blue light released from the front of the Magic Transport revealed the path as it moved down the street.

This transport was the product of high-level Magic and advanced Alchemy. The material used for the transport’s frame was the newly developed Mithril, created by alchemy -- greatly reducing the weight of the transport, and increasing its durability.

Even when it was traveling along normal roads, a complex urban route, the transport could move at around 250 KM/H. It was guided by an advanced AI, which was created by an imprint of a person’s mind using Magic.

However, the production of Mithril was extremely difficult, so it was still a very valuable product. This kind of Magic Transport was only an experimental project that was limited to Tokyo and nearby precincts.

The Magic Transport had arrived at the main station for Vindex. As the doors opened quietly, Kazuki and Kanae both exited the transport and onto the station platform.

Because the two of them had left home when there was still a lot of time remaining before the beginning of the school day, there were very few freshmen and the station was very quiet. The street near the station, which contained quite a few shops, was the same -- aside from the convenience store, the shutters of the other shops hadn’t been opened.

“Older brother, you are really planning on entering the Magic Division, not the Knight Division?” Kanae asked unhappily as the two of them walked from the station to the academy.

“There is nothing to say about it. This isn’t something I have control over.” Kazuki replied.

It has been 15 years since Magic seemed to reappear, an ancient power emerging back into society.

No one knew why it came back, scientists were baffled. One day, humans began demonstrating strange and inexplicable powers and then Spirits began making contact.

The world’s order had changed on that day.

Magic could neither be explained, nor restricted by science -- it seemed to bend the laws of physics at will.

For example, when a Magic user covered their bodies in Mana, this layer of Magic would act as a defensive barrier and repel physical phenomena. This Defensive Magic also canceled forces associated with the phenomena, such as inertia and vibrations -- it could only be destroyed by objects utilizing Magic or attack Spells.

This allowed for the rise of cold weapons.

Weapons such as swords, daggers, spears and axes were much easier to enchant because they stayed in the user’s hand; which facilitated the expansion of the user’s Mana to cover the weapon.

However, guns and explosives couldn’t be utilized as easily. Of course, some militaries discovered the way to enchant bullets, but they were much too expensive for ordinary people to use.

Thus began the ‘Era of Swords and Magic’.

“Kazuki, you who inspired me in the way of the sword, is actually forced to enter the Magic Division…to live in a different dormitory -- I am very pissed off at the Spirit who gave older brother his enigma…” Kanae muttered with a pout.

“For what purpose did the Spirit give someone like me this Enigma?” Kazuki whispered quietly, looking down at the Enigma.

***

The Spirits were inhabitants of an alternate world, which could be brought into the ‘real’ world through Summoning Magic.

Deep in the human subconscious was a door that lead to another world; and this other world linked all humans. This non-material word was named Animus Mundus, in which there flowed massive amounts of Magic Power.

Inside the ‘river’ of Magic Power there dwelled many consciousnesses, shaped by humanity. They contracted with humans, moving into the dreams of Magic Users to speak with them.

The Spirits used this to form contracts, which enabled them to come to reality and influence it -- Summoning Magic.

Because the Spirits were shaped by the human subconscious, they had names and attributes as Gods and Demons from different mythologies.

But they insisted that the name of their ‘species’ was Spirits.

A lot of countries, ones which were already religious, became fanatical towards the Spirits, worshiping them. However, there were some countries, such as Japan, which controlled the contracted Mages and Spirits as though they were a military asset.

This was because, when compared to normal Magic, the Summoning Magic -- backed by immensely powerful Spirits -- was much stronger and more dangerous.

Enigmas were currently strictly regulated by the Japanese government. Thus, all of the people who were discovered to have an Enigma were forced to enter the Magic Division of the Academy called Vindex.

“I also didn’t want to be a Summoner. However, if you are granted an Enigma, you lose the freedom to control your future.” Kazuki said with a sigh.

A single Summoning Mage, or Summoner, was equivalent to thousands of normal soldiers when on the battlefield.

“But, instead of a Summoner, I wanted to be a Knight. I always wanted to use this to demonstrate my gratitude to father, for accepting me as his son.”

Kanae looked at Kazuki with pity in her large, brown eyes.

Even if they were both a part of the military, the position of Knight was much lower than that of a Summoner.

Knights used close-combat, working on buying time for the Summoner to chant Spells. They were vital to the army, but they fought on the front-line, their life expectancy was much lower than that of a Summoner -- so was their power.

However, Kazuki still dreamed of being a powerful Knight, to repay his father, Kenshi Jinkai, for adopting and training him. Kazuki wished for the whole world to know of the power of the swordsmanship of the Kenshi family -- this was his most important goal in life.

“So, you should also accept this reality.” Kazuki said, gently stroking Kanae’s hair.

“I know…but I still don’t like it! If there is another reason, it would be that that matches between you and I have not yet determined an ultimate winner!” She said with a pout.

“Well, am I not leading? 139 wins and 118 losses?” Kazuki said with a smile.

“No! The match is to continue until I overtake you~! Until then, we should always continue to fight!”

Kazuki poked Kanae’s forehead, “If you are the strongest Knight, then I will become the strongest Summoner.”

Kanae’s eyes widened.

“So, from now on, we are still ‘opponents’. Your swords must not lose against my Summoning Magic.” Kazuki continued.

“...Kazuki, you must become the strongest in the Magic Division. The people of the Kenshi family cannot be anything else.” Kanae said with a pretend serious expression.

Kazuki nodded, but in his heart -- he never desired to be the strongest; he only wished to please his adopted father and sister.
