Standing on the sports ground, Kazuki and Mio stood, confronting each other. After hearing the news, a crowd of students had come over to observe.

The clash between sword and Magic in an official duel was rare, let alone the fact that the sword-user belonged to the same Division as the Magic User -- it gathered concern concerning the relations between the two Divisions and their relations.

“Although they gathered here, this duel will end in a short period.” Mio said, then chanted a spell, “I know thy name…Thy name is Phenex--”

Her stigma glowed an orange colour, flames grew out of her shadow. At the same time, her uniform disintegrated and was reconstructed into her Magic Armour.

…Looking again, she really is an extremely beautiful girl.

Kazuki’s Magic Armour was only a small ring. However, his precious sword was resting in its sheath on his waist. The combination of the Magic Division’s uniform, coupled with a sheathed sword, gave of a sense of wrongness to everyone observing.

The beautiful Summoner and the Magic Knight were confronting each other.

“Under the supervision of Hiakari Koyuki, the duel between Amasaki Mio and Kenshi Kazuki will begin.”

For some reason, the referee was Koyuki -- Kaguya hadn’t wished to referee a duel between two of her juniors, because it made her feel uncomfortable. Koyuki had also been a part of the Student Council since junior high, so she had accumulated quite a bit of experience.

The two of them were situated fifty feet from each other.

Although Kazuki could finish running that distance within around five seconds, Mio would also be avoiding him while she chanted.

This distance is a rule to make the fight more fair, because a Summoner would be taken out almost instantly if the Knight was within arms reach from the beginning.

Without feeling anxious, Kazuki stood with his sword drawn and held in a low stance. The familiar feeling of Enhancement Magic, the warmth running through every inch of his body, appeared.

“Then…begin!”

Seeing that the preparations were complete -- Koyuki announced the start of the duel.

With a simple movement, Kazuki kicked off the ground.

Mio, on the other hand, retreated as she began to chant a Spell.

No matter how fast Kazuki was, the distance was enough for her to complete at least a single Spell.

“Barrett!” Mio let out.

Behind her, Phenex’s wings spread.

Phenex’s level 1 Magic, Barrett -- Phenex flaps its wings and shoots out flaming feathers. It carries a dual attribute of Fire and Wind, and flies in a spiral.

With a speed surpassing a bullet, it can penetrate its target and cause their insides to burn.

A normal person, even a trained Knight, would have problems evading this Spell -- But Kazuki dodged, jumping to the side.

Mio, who had been confident, revealed a surprised expression. Other than that, she didn’t react -- continuing to chant and unleashing a second Barrett.

However, Kazuki had already grasped the flow of her Magic Power, like an expert martial-artist reading their opponent’s breathing.

The instant her Magic Power expanded -- less than half a second before her Spell was unleashed -- Kazuki began moving; just like dancing in the wind, he dodged the second Barrett and plunged into Mio’s arms.

His sword was positioned for a slash.

Mio’s face was distorted with an expression of shock.

With a white flash, the first strike of Kakuki’s favourite sword combo was unleashed -- a single, horizontal slash.

The sword collided violently with Mio’s defensive Magic. Blue light flashed -- illuminating her shapely body.

Mio staggered back a few steps.

Kazuki followed inertia and spun his sword, slashing for a second time, this time from left to right.

This time, Mio’s Defensive Magic flared brilliantly and began to flicker -- she spun back, the force of the Enhancement Magic added to Kazuki’s strength was enough to almost throw Mio through the air.

“He dodged Summoning Magic?” Kaguya couldn’t help but let out a surprised exclamation.

“Demon with Magic Eyes…This was what older brother was called when he entered competitions between different Families. A Knight who could read an opponent’s Mana to dodge or block attacks before they are released. Using Kenshi-Ryuu, he had refined both his Physical Enhancement, and Perception Magic.” Kanae stood next to Kaguya and smiled proudly.

“How?!” Kaguya had seen older Knights pull off similar stunts, but they had ten or fifteen years of experience -- the First Knights had perfected this maneuver.

“If it is a normal Knight, at best -- they can usually only read breathing and muscle movement. But, Kenshi-Ryuu came from one of the First Knights, one who had very little Magic Power and had to learn to fight anyway, increasing the efficiency of his Perception Magic and dodging attacks instead of wasting Mana taking the hits with his Defensive Magic.” Kanae explained with pride glittering in her eyes, “Being able to read Magic Power, the speed of the attack doesn’t matter.”

Kaguya looked back at Kazuki with widened eyes, a curious glow in them -- her cheeks reddened slightly.

If it was me, how would I deal with this kind of technique? How would I obtain victory?

“...Hmm, if it was me, I would chant a large-scale Magic that is impossible to avoid even after reading it.” Kaguya spoke her thoughts without meaning to.

“Do you believe that older brother and I would give you that much time to Chant?” Kanae asked with a shit-eating grin and a raised eyebrow.

“Well, if it is Kanae’s sword -- it will be unable to stop my chanting.” Kaguya shot back with a smile that showed her teeth.

Hearing Kaguya’s words, Kanae glared at the other girl.

***

Even after being slashed twice and her Defensive Magic draining a large portion of her Mana, Mio kept chanting -- keeping herself calm by force of will.

The thought echoing in her mind was the desire to not lose to a sword technique.

Kazuki had already caught up.

Mio rapidly chanted, a Magic Circle appeared -- extending from her feet and radiating in all directions.

There was a flash and cracks appeared in the ground, spewing up massive flames.

A wall of fire emerged at his feet, it was impossible for him to dodge by purely using his eyes -- even with his Perception Magic.

Or so Mio thought…but Kazuki seemed to have predicted her Spell and stopped an instant before touching the fire. A few seconds later, the Spell ended and the crack in the ground resealed, followed by the disappearance of the flames.

Kazuki continued his dash towards Mio -- who couldn’t do anything but be sent flying again by his attack.

“W, Why?!” Mio gasped, as she was submerged in an unending storm of slashes.

“Stop right there!” Koyuki said, seeing that Mio’s Defensive Magic was about to be exhausted.

Mio sat powerlessly on the ground, her Magic Armour disintegrated and changed back into her school uniform.

“It’s my win. Please take back the insults that you said about my adoptive father.” Kazuki said, standing over her, his sword sheathed again.

The Knight Division students began applauding.

“So, this is the true Sword Techniques?” Kaguya whispered in amazement.

Kanae smiled widely, “It’s my big brother!”

The Knight Division students were cheering while the two Student Council Presidents surveyed the scene.

“Amazing. Being able to do something like this…there really is someone else beside the President.” Torazou Yamada muttered.

“Fufufu, I’m looking forward to the Division Competition! Next time, it will be you and me who are on the stage!” Kanae declared, her eyes burning as she stared at her adopted brother.

Hearing Kanae’s words, and the heat in her voice, Kaguya smiled. Whether it was the fight against Kanae, or the future growth of Kazuki, it gave her a sense of anticipation.

Ever since she had defeated Hikaru, Kaguya had felt alone and invincible within the Magic Division -- but after finding out that she had a strong enemy, Kaguya was thrilled.

Mio awkwardly muttered, “No…I didn’t lose.”

“You just won’t give up! Kenishi-Ryuu is not weak, just admit it!”

“No, no, no! Kenishi’s Sword or whatever is weaker than Summoning Magic!”

“Even though we have dueled, why do you still insist that it is weak?!”

This person, what kind of prejudice did she have towards Kenshi-Ryuu.

Tears formed in Mio’s eyes, soon dripping down her cheeks, causing Kazuki to feel frightened.

“Speaking of which…Why can’t you remember who I am! Remember that for me! I…I’m Mio! The Mio who once lived with you at the orphanage!”

The Orphanage?! -- Kazuki was suddenly speechless.

When his eyes met Mio’s, the figure of a small girl appeared in his mind. The shadow of her face was overlaid the older face looking up at him -- it was the girl who had always followed him around.

That person’s name had also been Mio, but being an orphan with unknown parents --- like Kazuki -- she didn’t have a surname.

“Amasaki, could it be…that you are that Mio?!”

“Didn’t I just say it! Why didn’t you notice?! Idiot!”

The surrounding audience were confused -- but neither Kazuki nor Mio cared.

“But, Mio…should be a smaller child. Speaking of which, she should be younger than me by two years?!”

“I am not small! I grew up since then!”

Back at the orphanage, the age of the children were usually guessed based on the size and development of their bodies.

If she was smaller than her true age, or had raised a grade; it wasn’t impossible for her to suddenly become his classmate.

“Even though you left us and disappeared, why did you forget about me? Unbelievable. Even though I clearly remembered the Kenshi Family that took you away.” Mio finally cried.

Kazuki’s mind was filled with guilt.

“How did I forget? Even now, the experience at the orphanage is still a part of my important memories! But I didn’t recognize the name Amasaki, and Mio is a fairly common name--” Kazuki spoke rapidly, trying to find excuses.

“Just like your talent in swords was seen through and left us, my talent in Magic was also discovered and I was adopted by the Amasaki Family! Although I had gone up a grade, it was also because of my efforts that I became an A-Rank! My Summoning Magic is stronger than the likes of Kenshi-Ryuu!”

So that was the reason why she had provoked him, by insulting Kenshi-Ryuu.

“I…absolutely will not accept Kenshi-Ryuu, who snatched my Kazu away!!” Mio wiped her eyes with her sleeve, stood up, and ran away.

Just when he was considering chasing her.

Koyuki blew the whistle indicating the end of the match.

“The winner is Kenshi Kazuki.” Koyuki said, her voice feeble.
