Chapter 31: Book 2 – Chapter 1

Dry leaves, loose earth, and sand were piling up over the swamp. Kazuki stepped onto the damp ground as he ran towards the approaching enemy.

 

Visible through the trees with violet trunks and sickly green leaves were Monsters that looked like jelly-bean shaped lump of brightly coloured slime -- these slimes were rapidly approaching to attack Kazuki.

 

The Quest that Kazuki and the others had accepted was the Suppression of Monsters in a nearby Corrupted area.

 

A blue slime, one which chilled the air around it, was cut in half -- but, the blue slimes immediately rejoined and returned to normal. This survivability shocked Kazuki -- he realized that his sword wasn’t effective.

 

The nearby slimes of different colours took advantage of this surprised and all at once leaped towards Kazuki.

 

“...Firewall!”

 

Kazuki calmly finished his Incantation, Summoning Magic for Phenex. He hadn’t stopped his charging all the while, hitting the slimes away with the side of his sword.

 

With flashes of orange light, fissures ran through the ground under Kazuki’s feet, a wall of flames burst out.

 

The attacking slimes were effortly swallowed by the fire wall and all evaporated at once. The few slimes that managed to jump away before the fire rose attacked Kazuki again, but he brushed them off with his sword -- at that instant, the voice of his partner echoed from behind him.

 

“...Barrett!”

 

The flame bullet smashed into the slimes, melting the few survivors.

 

…

 

“Kazuki! Hooray, we beat them with the same Magic~!” Mio exclaimed excitedly as she clung to Kazuki’s arm.

 

Kazuki had noticed that Mio’s attitude had softened further since her ‘almost death’.

 

“Come on, don’t let your mind wander in the middle of a Quest.” Kazuki reminded her.

 

Even with the girl pressed against him, he didn’t enjoy it -- because her Magic Armour was cold and solid. Kazuki couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed.

 

Mio made a sulky expression, “What? I properly watched our surroundings, even after I took action, you know.”

 

While clinging to his arm, Mio brought her face closer to Kazuki and stuck her tongue out at him. Even though she had a cheeky expression, Kazuki was conscious of her lips and tongue so close to his mouth.

 

At that moment, sounds rang out from the thicket in front of them, and a new group of slimes came leaping out. Mio, who had just said that she was properly observing the surroundings, reacted quickly and stood behind Kazuki as she began chanting -- the Heaven and Earth Formation, with the Knight acting as vanguard.

 

Kazuki also chanted as he readied his sword.

 

“Barrett!”

 

“Fire Wall!”

 

The flame wall of the vanguard, Kazuki; and the ranged attack by the rearguard, Mio. This formation was very successful -- reducing the interweaving group of slimes to ashes.

 

However, a crimson slime flew out of the flames.

 

Somehow, this slime seemed resistant to heat -- as though its colour was based on its special ability.

 

Kazuki immediately stepped forwards, meeting the slime midair, cutting it. He noticed that the slime was releasing its own heat, and because of the slash, the slime scattered into two pieces -- which slipped past Kazuki.

 

“Damn it!” Kazuki muttered.

 

“Eek! What is this?”

 

The slime seemed to self-destruct, turning into a spray of red slim that rained onto Mio.

Flustered, Mio tried to clean the slime off her body and Magic Armour. However, the the body-suit and armour was beginning to melt wherever the slime made contact.

 

“No! My clothing is melting!” Mio squeaked.

 

Of course, Magic Armour was created using Magic Power, so it could easily be regenerated. But the surprise made it take a while for Mio to recover enough to regenerate her Magic Armour.

 

With an angry expression, Mio stood up, her armour restored -- but her cheeks were flushed.

 

Just as she was about to speak, tentacles emerged from the lake and grabbed her limps, elevating her into the air.

 

Before she could even register what was going on, Kazuki dashed forwards and severed the tentacles -- driving the Monster back and catching the falling Mio in a princess carry.

However, there was still a problem -- which came in the form of numerous crimson slimes gathering in the trees. They had no way of fighting them off.

 

The mission was to defeat the Monsters, but it seemed that they would have to escape instead.

 

“...Glacial Wind!”

 

With those words, a chilly wind blew from next to Kazuki. It was the ice-cold breath of a mermaid; causing the crimson slimes to freeze solid in the blink of an eye.

 

Ice-attribute Summoning Magic?

 

“Koyuki? …Thank you. You came to save us?”

 

Kazuki asked as he turned around and saw their classmate clad in her Magic Armour -- no expressions on her beautiful face.

 

“I think that we received the same quest by chance.” Koyuki said, before looking at Mio in Kazuki’s arms, “This is a shameful sight, isn’t it? You’re only a hindrance if you can’t fight already. How about you just go home.”

 

Koyuki turned her back on Kazuki.

 

“Koyuki, be careful if you happen to see any blue slimes -- the red ones have fire resistance, so…” Kazuki warned.

 

One of Koyuki’s pointed ears twitched when she heard Kazuki’s words, but without even glancing back, she disappeared between the strange trees that grew thickly inside this Corruption.

 

“...No choice then. Let’s return to the Academy, Mio.” Kazuki spoke ot Mio as she rested in his arms.

 

“...Kazu,” Her voice sounded drowsy, almost sweet.

 

“Mio?” He looked down at her.

 

“Kazu…my chest is hot. My body, my chest, my stomach feel strange…” Mio slurred as she hugged Kazuki tightlu.

 

Kazuki looked at Mio’s face -- which was flushed red, her eyes was glassy, and her breathing was rough as it passed through her half-opened lips.

 

It seems that the hot liquid from before had a strange effect. It had melted Mio’s Magic Armour, which was created from Magic Power -- from force of will -- which demonstrated that it had some kind of mental influence.

 

But, rather than a poison…the liquid showed effects of an aphrodesiac, and maybe some kind of alcohol.

 

“Kazu…I love you! I love you, I love you so much!! Hug me more!!”

 

Heart marks scattered from Mio as she pressed herself against Kazuki -- her Magic Armour disappeared. She was in her school uniform, so Kazuki could feel her softness. Mio coiled her legs around him as well and a sweet scent filled the air -- her sighs, which hit Kazuki’s neck, were hot and amorous.

 

Kazuki felt panicked.

 

He knew that he had to resist, that as long as he could keep her safe from Monsters, Mio should recover with time.

 

Holding her tightly -- mainly to stop her from squirming around too much -- Kazuki ran through the forest.
