Chapter 34: Book 2 – Chapter 4

An unexpected person was waiting for Kazuki when he came out of the staff room.

 

“Kazuki, did you mess up something that required you to get called in by Teacher? …Oof.”

 

Because of her small build -- and his mind was filled with the thought of his and Mio’s conundrum -- he didn’t see her. Her face collided with Kazuki’s chest and she leaked out that ‘oof’. Even though her voice was still cold.

 

“Koyuki?!…Are you okay?” Kazuki asked worriedly as he supported her shoulder.

 

“I’m fine.” She said, shaking his hand off. “Rather than that, please don’t ignore my question. Why were you called?”

 

“Aah, that was…Because of the failed Quest yesterday, Teacher Elizabeth gave me a warning that if our evaluation keeps declining like this, it will be serious trouble. I’m an E-Rank, you see.”

 

He wasn’t sure why, but Kazuki chose to explain while avoiding Mio’s matter.

 

Koyuki’s expression became stiff when she heard his words, “…It’s unreasonable, isn’t it? You won a duel against an A-Rank, so failing a Quest once shouldn’t make your evaluation drop.”

 

“Are you worried about my problem?” Kazuki asked, surprised.

 

While Kazuki started heading back to the Witches’ Mansion, the smaller girl walked alongside him.

 

“It’s not that. It’s just, I wanted to give my thanks where there is nobody else…if it’s now, whether it be Mio, the President, or your little sister, somebody is almost always around you.”

 

Koyuki explained, before shyly saying ‘thank you’.

 

“Is this about the strange slimes with attribute resistance yesterday?” Kazuki asked, again getting surprised.

 

“Yes. Thanks to your warning, I could successfully complete the quest. If it wasn’t for that, when I discovered the blue slimes, I’d have lost my composure and might have fallen into a predicament.”

 

“But how did you defeat the slime which had resistance to Ice Magic?”

 

“My contracted Spirit, Vepar, rules over both the cold -- and water. I suffocated it to death by drying its skin by freezing the moisture off the surface and then encased it. It had resistance to direct freezing and internal freezing, but the moisture on its surface wasn’t effected by that resistance.”

 

“Huh. Slimes need to breath?” Kazuki asked.

 

The books about Monsters had never mentioned that fact.

 

“I was half in doubt when I tested it…But it did die. I don’t think it had any organs for breathing, so it likely breathes through its skin. It was a creature that lived on land and didn’t seem to have anything that resembled a structure to take oxygen from water -- however, like earthworms which can breathe as long as the surface of their skin stays wet…I dried them out using Ice, and they suffocated.”

 

So, when doing Quests in the future, I need to make sure to more carefully observe unknown Monsters calmly and experiment with various elements, Spells, and fighting styles.

 

Mio and I couldn’t do that…but this girl could.

 

“...As I thought. Koyuki, will you join our party?”

 

Hearing Kazuki’s proposal, Koyuki sullenly knitted her eyebrows, “Because you failed the Quest and fell into a pinch, you want me to lend you some help?”

 

“Sorry. Frankly, I’m weak. Besides, this time, you were mostly okay. Even so, going alone is very dangerous…and counter-intuitive when it comes to after you graduate and need to join a Knight Squadron. In my opinion, I think it will be better to team up with someone -- even if it isn’t us.”

 

“Weak? You are not weak. Rather, isn’t it Mio, who lost in a duel against you, that is weak? For example…it is also her who is likely to be demoted to B-Rank?”

 

Koyuki’s words surprised Kazuki, she had seen through the his lie of omission so easily.

 

“I think that if I join you because you are the one that is in danger, then Mio will be able to accept it; but, if it’s because she, herself, is in danger, then…I think she will reject it resolutely. She has a lot of pride, and she also hates me.” Koyuki said calmly.

“Certainly, she has a lot of pride, but…she doesn’t hate you.” Kazuki said as he looked down at the girl next to him.

 

“She really hates me, though. She opposes me in every single thing.”

 

“That’s not it. Mio said ‘I don’t want a strange guy added to the party!’. In short, that means that if it’s not a strange person, then it’s okay to add them to the party. Since you aren’t a strange person, it’s all okay!” Kazuki said with a wide grin.

 

“...What the heck was that? That logic you gave was really pushing it. I am a plenty strange girl.” Koyuki looked up at him, her eyes widened.

 

“Koyuki, you aren’t someone strange at all. You are an extremely kind person, aren’t you? When some of the people in the class started making fun of me because I specialize in swordsmanship, you said that it isn’t worthless and gave me some encouragement. Those words helped cheer me up. You were impartial, even when others thought that I was a useless E-Rank. You are a girl who is fair and hates discrimination or bullying. I respect that kindness and strength.”

 

“Wha--What are you saying…” Kazuki’s expression became stiff.

 

Kazuki continued to speak. Because he had begun, he may as well finish.

 

“Beside that, you have calm judgement. There have already been a few times when you have saved me from a tight spot. Kind, strong, cool and responsible -- you are this kind of girl.”

 

“That is…my only worth is my Magic in battles, that’s why…”

 

“You are too humble, saying that kind of thing. But, every time I have done some housework, you have said ‘thank you’ when you see it. You show a cold attitude, but in truth, you are a warm person.”

 

Koyuki blushed deep red as she looked downwards, a heart mark flew from her chest.

 

While they were talking, the two had arrived at the Witches’ Mansion and stopped in the garden.

 

…

 

The door opened and Mio came flying out from the living room.

 

“Kazuki! Welcome home, where did you go just now? …Eh, Koyuki?”

 

When she noticed Koyuki standing right beside Kazuki, Mio stopped and glared at her.

 

Koyuki announced in a disinterested voice, “Amasaki Mio, I challenge you to a duel.”

 

Both Kazuki and Mio froze because of the unexpected words.

 

“Because you lost against an E-Rank, and then failed your first Quest, you will be demoted to B-Rank if you keep this up. If that happens, it is unlikely that you can stay at the Witches’ Mansion.”

 

“I, I will be B-Rank?! And then…from this place…”

 

“Koyuki! Why are you saying that?!” Kozuki asked, shocked.

 

But, Koyuki suddenly glared back at Kazuki, “I refused your invitation because it was troublesome. Annoying. Besides…Besides if the person herself  didn’t have any real ability and she got dropped into a suitable rank, isn’t that for her own good?”

 

Koyuki looked at Mio, who was still frozen in shock, and said, “…Amasaki Mio. If you lose to me, then you will immediately be demoted to B-Rank. So, will you accept my duel challenge? I don’t mind if you turn tail and run, though.”

 

In a flash, Mio’s face went red with rage, “There…There is no way that I’ll run, right?! Before, it was E-Rank Kazuki who challenged me to a duel, now it is you…Bring it on!”

 

She pointed at Koyuki, trembling with anger. “I’ll finish you quick and easy, proving that I am an appropriate A-Rank!!”

 

Certainly, if Mio fought equally, or more, against Koyuki -- whose rank was also A -- Mio might be able to prove that she didn’t need a demotion to B-Rank.

 

“...Then please wait outside. I’ll call senior and Teacher so that they can be the witnesses required for the duel.” Koyuki slipped past Mio and climbed the stairs.
