Chapter 35: Book 2 – Chapter 5

“Kaguya, why did you acknowledge the duel?” Kazuki asked from beside Kaguya.

 

“Nnn…Because when I heard the circumstances, I thought that this was for the best?” Kaguya said, tilting her head, “Anyway, let’s just see what will happen, okay? Come on, it’s starting.”

 

Kaguya pointed at the center of the sports ground. In that direction, Mio and Koyuki were standing 50 meters apart and facing each other -- the referee standing between them was Hikaru.

 

Kazuki, Elizabeth, and the others were sitting in the guest seats that surrounded the sports ground.

 

“Mio had made up her mind, huh. But to show whether she has the strength of an A-Rank, this is certainly the easiest way to discover.” Elizabeth said.

 

Because this duel was performed so suddenly, there were no other curious students in attendance.

Both of them began their Spells at the same time.

 

Mio was wrapped in an orange light as her Magic Armour formed -- while Koyuki was wrapped in a white light, her Magic Armour appeared in a flash.

 

Kazuki discovered that he was holding his breath. This was the first time that he had seen a Magic Duel -- without being one of the participants.

 

“Well then…Begin!” Shouting this, Hikaru started the duel.

 

Both Mio and Koyuki emitted immense amounts of Magic Power as their Spells began forming.

 

Koyuki was the one who finished her Spell first, the partially translucent image of a mermaid appeared, floating behind her back.

 

“Glacial Wind!”

 

Freezing winds blew across the intervening distance. Mio, who was concentrating on her Incantation, couldn’t defend herself -- her Defensive Magic protected her automatically.

 

However, this didn’t interrupt Mio’s concentration and she retaliated with her own Magic a few seconds later.

 

“...Barrett!”

 

This time, Koyuki was impacted by the familiar flaming bullet -- the blue light of Defensive Magic flashed around her as well.

“First, they confirmed each other’s chanting speed using level 1 Spells. If it were Knights, this would be testing range and reaction speed. The real fight will start from here.” Kaguya whispered, explaining to Kazuki.

Koyuki seemed to be the faster chanter, which meant that Mio would have to fight defensively from the beginning and try to force Koyuki to be interrupted.

 

“Icing the Field!” Koyuki finished chanting her Spell an instant earlier than Mio -- cold air spread out from under her feet and covered the entire field in a thick coating of Ice.

 

“--Self Burning!” Mio quickly summoned flame armour to protect herself -- a fire burned around her body, like a second armour.

 

Mio tried to take a step, and her foot slipped.

 

On the other hand, Koyuki had formed Ice ridges on the bottom of her armoured shoes -- which looked like skates. She quickly sped across the 50 meters in a few seconds.

 

As could be expected from someone who insists on fighting alone, Vepar was an ‘all-purpose Spirit’.

 

Koyuki quickly approached Mio and performed a dance-like jump; it was almost like she was a figure-skater. While she was in the air, she spun and unleashed a kick at towards Mio -- her ice blades managed to penetrate Mio’s flame armour.

 

However, the instant Koyuki’s kick landed, Mio used Psychokinesis to concentrate the entirety of the fire into a single place -- Koyuki’s kick was swallowed by the fiercely growing fire.

 

The ice shoes were evaporated inside the highly concentrate fire, making Koyuki’s attack powerless.

 

Koyuki’s eyes widened in surprise.

 

The moment that Koyuki reapplied her ice blades -- Mio finished another Spell.

 

“Fire Wall!”

 

Fissures ran along the ground under the layer of ice that was formed by Koyuki’s Spell -- flames blew upwards.

“White World!”

 

However, Koyuki was also chanting a different large-scale Spell as she skated on the icy surface.

 

The surroundings suddenly seemed to become a world of snow and ice. In this freezing area -- the flame wall, along with Mio’s flame armour, was banished.

 

An instant later, the alternate space that Koyuki had created used up all its energy, the area returned to normal.

 

But, one of Koyuki’s ice shoes remained, and she released a high kick towards Mio’s throat -- the sharp ice ripped Mio’s Magic Power apart.

 

Mio staggered powerlessly from the impact of her smashed Magic Power.

Kazuki automatically shifted in his seat, as though he was about to jump into the fight.

 

“Kazuki. So, you lose your cool if it’s to do with Mio, huh…I might be a little jealous.” Kaguya said with a bitter smile as she reached out and placed a hand on Kazuki’s shoulder, to hold him back.

 

“You see, even while Mio was taking damage, she still continued her Chanting.” Kaguya explained. “Maybe because you value her so much, you tend to underestimate her. You consider her as someone you have to protect at all costs…certainly, Koyuki has superior innate Magic Power. But, even with that, both of them are -- equal.”

 

Kazuki looked closely and saw that waves of Magic Power were roiling off Mio. An explosion occurred soon afterwards.

 

…

 

“Blazing Wings!”

 

Mio finished her Spell in a dignified voice. It was Phenex’s level 5 Summoning Magic.

 

Enormous flaming wings emerged from Mio’s back, with a width of 10 meters.

 

She slashed those wings towards Koyuki.

 

However, while her Defensive Magic received the impact received the impact of an enormous amount of fire, Koyuki also continued Chanting a high-level Spell.

 

“...Ice Buster!”

Mio finished the Incantation in a strained voice. Two consecutive uses of level 5 Magic in a row, at her age -- was impressive. Her face was pale white and her muscles trembled.

 

Her renewed flame wings managed to overpower Koyuki’s glaciers, pushing them back. Even against an Elf  like Koyuki -- who had extraordinary Magic Power -- her well of Magic Power was impressive.

 

…

 

“It’s over!” Hikaru stopped the battle with a shout.

 

For safety, the duel would be stopped when one of the combatants had their Magic Power depleted to dangerous levels.

 

Both girls had used up all of the Magic Power and willpower at the same time. Koyuki knelt on the ground, and Mio fell down, kneeling in exhaustion as well. Both of their Magic Armours released light and then turned back into their uniforms.

 

“It won’t have any persuasive power if she is demoted after showing such an impressive battle, huh.” Elizabeth, who had been silently spectating until now, whispered with a sigh.

 

“In the case of a draw, the evaluation of the side with the lower rank will be increased slightly. Hiakari Koyuki is the top of her grade, so in this case, Amasaki Mio’s evaluation will be increased…Koyuki, you didn’t go easy on your opponent deliberately, right?” Elizabeth asked.

 

“...With Mio as the opponent--there wouldn’t be any room for that.” Koyuki said as she changed to a seated position, looking completely exhausted. “It seems that everyone…overestimated me too much, because I’m an Elf.”

“Mio!” Kazuki rushed over to Mio -- who was sitting now as well, sweating and breathing roughly, as though she had just finished a marathon.

 

Even in her current state, Mio put on a smiling expression and showed a victory hand gesture to Kazuki.
