Chapter 2: Family

Talia ‘it's getting pretty late I should start heading back home.’ 
 
 
I got up from the grass and started heading towards a small village nearby. Upon entering the village a few people greeted me as I walked by until I eventually arrived at a decently sized Japanese style house, I slid open the front door and walked in and there waiting for me was my mom maria who had light blonde hair and gold-colored eyes. 
 
 
Maria “Talia where have you been, I couldn’t find you anywhere.” 
 
 
Talia “I was on the small hill overlooking the forest not too far away from here mom. You should know that’s my favorite spot to go too by now.” 
 
 
Maria “really you went there again huh. Well next time you want to go to that hill please let me know, I almost had a heart attack when I couldn’t find you anywhere.”  
 
 
Talia “I make no promises” I said with a straight face 
 
 
Maria “no. You WILL tell me or you won’t go at all.” my mom said with a stern expression. 
 

 
Talia “YES MAM.” I said while giving her a salute 
 
 
Maria “thank you. Now come on it’s time for dinner.” 
 
 
we both started walking towards the dining room and upon entering the room I saw my dad Julian sitting down at a small circular table waiting for us. He had black hair and blue eyes. he greeted us as we sat down and we started eating. 
 
Julian “hello Talia, maria” 
 
 
Maria “hello dear.” 
 
 
Talia “hello dad.” 
 
 
Julian “so honey where did our little troublemaker run off to this time?” 
 
 
Talia “HEY!” 
 
 
Maria “sigh just as you expected, she was on the hill that overlooks the forest not too far from here.” 
 
 
Julian “Hahaha. Well I can't really blame her, I also went there all the time when I was younger to relax.” 
 
 
Maria “yea it’s also where we met.” she had a small smile while saying so 
 
 
Julian “yep that was one of the best days of my life.” he was also smiling remembering that day 
 
 
Talia “you guys do remember I'm here, right?” 
 
 
Julian/Maria “”sorry.”” 
 
 
Talia “Anyway, when can I start learning magic? I keep seeing you guys use it for basic chores and I read some books around the house about it but I can’t seem to manipulate mana no matter what I try. Even if I am blessed by it apparently.” I said that last part under my breath so only I could hear. 
 
 
Maria “why do you want to learn how to use magic?” 
 
 
Talia “because it looks like a lot of fun!” I yelled with sparkles in my eyes. 
 
 
Julian “hahaha How about this, you can start learning a little magic from us when you turn five in about a month and if you still want to learn more when you get older we can hire a magic instructor for you.” 
 

Talia “sounds like a plan. I'm not sure what the future me will think, but the current me loves that plan.” 
 
 
Maria “alright then that’s what will happen. Now go to bed it’s getting late.” 
 
 
Talia “alright good night”  
 

I get up and walk to my room and lay down on my bed before instantly going to sleep 
 
---Maria Pov--- 
 
I watched my daughter walk into her room and close the door then turned towards Julian. 
 
 
maria “Julian, I want to talk to you about our daughter, have you noticed something off about her at all?” 
  

Julian “I mean, she acts more mature than any other child her age, but that’s about it maria.”  
 
 
Maria “that's what I am talking about, she acts very mature for her age, why do you think she does?”  
 
 
Julian “hmm I'm not sure. but she could be a reincarnator. there have been a few of those before.” 
 
 
Maria “if that is the case I'm not sure what to think about that. I mean sure she is sort of our daughter, but then it's also someone else entirely.” 
 
 

Julian “well I don’t care if she is a reincarnator, she is still my daughter and I will support her either way.” 
 
 
Maria “while I agree. I don’t know how I feel about someone else’s soul inside our daughter's body, I mean sure it’s the body of our daughter, but is it really fine?” 
 
 
Julian “what do you suggest we do then dear? with the war going on right now against that upstart human country it's not like we can abandon her. no one deserves to be a slave to the Humans.” 
 

 
Maria “that’s true sigh I guess all we can do is try to earn her trust so she tells us if she is or not. and you are right, no one deserves to be a slave to those things.”

Julian “I'm glad we agree on this because even if we didn’t I would never let you abandon her.” 
 
 
Maria “and I never planned to” 
 
 
Julian “good. On another note, what magic are we going to teach Talia? We don’t even know what her affinity is because for some reason we haven’t been able to appraise her at all.” 
 
 
Maria “well it all depends on what affinity she has and we can easily find that out by asking her to tell us because I doubt she has never checked her status if she is that excited about using magic.” 
 
 
Julian “yea you're right let's ask her in the morning.” 
 
 
---Talia Pov--- 
 
The next day I woke up early due to the smell coming from the kitchen. Honestly, having a nose this good can be a blessing and a curse. I walked into the kitchen to see my mom preparing breakfast with the help of my dad 
 
 
Talia “yawn good morning. breakfast smells amazing.” 
 
 
Maria “good morning Talia and thanks.” 
 
 
Julian “you’re up quite early Talia. Couldn’t sleep?” 
 
 
Talia “I don’t know how anyone could sleep in while smelling something so good.” 
 
 
Julian “i agree” he said while nodding  
 
 
Maria “you two really like food huh?” 
 
 
Talia/Julian “Absolutely.” we both nodded this time 
 
 
Maria “hahaha. well I'm glad you two like my cooking.” 
 
 
Talia “can you teach me how to cook eventually mom?” 
 
 
Maria “sure if that’s what you want. now sit down and eat while its hot.” she said while setting down 3 plates of scrambled eggs and bacon. 
 
 
Julian “speaking of teach. Me and your mom were thinking about what magic to teach you but we don’t know your affinities since we haven’t been able to appraise you for some reason. Can you tell us what your affinities are?” 
 
 
Talia “oh yea that’s pretty important huh? Well my affinities according to my status are fire, water, wind, and earth. ‘well there’s time as well but I feel like saying that wouldn’t be a good idea’” I only thought that last part 
 
 
Julian “you have 4 affinities?” my dad said with shock evident on his face. 
 
 
Talia “yes?” I tilted my head “is that rare?” 
 
 
Maria “while it's not unheard of, it's very rare. You would be considered a special kind of genius at any magic academy.” my mom said with an equally shocked expression. 
 
 
Talia “i have a question. How rare are affinities like space, time, or creation?” 
 
 
Julian “someone with any of those three affinities has not appeared in more than a century. why?”  
 
 
Talia “when I was reading a book on all the elements it briefly mentioned those three elements and that they were very strong but nothing more than that so I was just curious.” phew I'm glad I didn’t mention that I had an affinity for time. 
 
 
Julian “fair. Well now that we know your elemental affinities, we can start training you but like we said we will only start once you turn five in about a month. Now go and play with your friends.” 
 
 
right, I do have a few friends that I occasionally play with but I only bothered learning one of their names since I don’t like the rest of them. 
 
 
Talia “okay see you later.”
 

I walked outside my house and started walking down the road until I exited the town I continued down a path before arriving at a flat plot of land and there sitting under a tree drawing in the dirt with a stick was the only person in this world I currently consider a friend, she had black hair with a matching pair of cat like ears and tail and light blue eyes. 
 
 
Talia “Hi there Darya.” 
 
 
Darya “oh hello Talia. I'm surprised you are here, you rarely show up to play anymore.” 
 

 
Talia “yea I was told to come here by my parent's sigh, I would come here more if Adar and Ceol wouldn’t be so noisy all the time.” 
 
 
Darya “you don’t need to worry about them today, they got grounded a few days ago for breaking someone's wagon.” 
 
 
Talia “that’s good, so what do you want to play Darya?” 
 
 

Darya “lets play tag! Your it.” she said and started running  
 
 
and like that I spent the rest of my day running around playing tag with Darya. We did build a dirt castle as well but as soon as we finished she started running around again. before long a few hours had gone by and i went home and fell asleep instantly once I layed down on my bed because of how tired I was from playing with Darya.
