Chapter 2: Problems already

Yuki stared at the empty space in front of her. 'Everyone literally died...?' With her mind racing she came up with a conclusion that it was just a dream before shaking her head quickly. 'This isn't a dream... ' Feeling tears roll down her face she quickly broke down.

 

A long time later, she started to calm down. 

 

[Don't worry, you will be able to meet them again. The gods made sure that everyone who was reincarnated will be able to meet and talk to each other again.]

 

While thanking the system Yuki wiped her eyes.  Quickly making it a goal to meet her family again, Yuki suddenly heard a distant shouting outside her room. Getting off the bed with a bit of struggle she walked near the door and started listening to the shouting.

 

"Sir, wasn't beating her to near death enough?" She heard an old woman's voice.

 

"That stupid demi bitch needs a worse punishment, she stole food from my store, and director you know how hard food is to get around these times, so if you don't provide the money for the food by tomorrow, that stupid demi will be sent to prison and get the final punishment she deserves." A middle aged man responded in a loud voice.

 

"But sir, you know we barely make enough as is, and you almost killed Yuki, if she wasn't treated for another hour she would've died, and you're saying she deserves a worse punishment?" After a few seconds the old woman responded.

 

After a few moments of back and forth, the old woman agreed to pay the man back. Feeling her heart race for some reason, she heard footsteps hurry to the door before it flung open, revealing an old woman. "Yuki, you're already up? I'm guessing you heard everything?" The old woman said as she saw Yuki staring at her.

 

"U-Um, yes, what was that all about?" Yuki responded with a puzzled expression on her face. 'I have to get used to being called Yuki.' She thought to herself, reminding herself she isn't who she was in her past life.

 

The old woman looked at Yuki with a confused expression. 'Surely she would've recognized his voice or something...?' the old woman thought. "Do you remember what happened before you woke up here?"

 

"No? I only remember waking up injured..." Yuki responded while lifting her right arm showing some bruises and little scratches on it. The old woman raised her eyebrows finally seeing that most of Yuki's injuries have healed at a rapid rate. 

 

'My healing spell should've healed a bit of it... did she somehow get healed again? Or did she get some innate ability to heal her faster?' The old woman thought at first before getting curious on how she doesn't remember anything about getting beaten. "Since you don't remember anything beforehand... the man who came here and started shouting about a demi stealing from his store, he was talking about you, do you remember at all stealing?" She asked. 

 

With a stiff expression on her face, Yuki started thinking on how to respond to this old woman she never knew. 'How in the hell am I supposed to respond?! It's obvious she knew 'me' before I was reincarnated...' "I don't remember stealing... A-And I don't remember anything about going to his store." She finally responded after a small bit.

 

The old woman sighed before shaking her head. "Yuki, this is gonna be a serious issue, the orphanage doesn't have enough funds, and if you get arrested by the cities guards you'll most likely get executed..."  

"Wait what? Why would they kill me if I didn't even steal anything?" Yuki quickly replied after hearing the old woman.

"Do you not remember what you've been dealing with ever since you got here? The persecution, the biased actions against you?" The old woman asked while raising her eyebrows.

"Oh... Right..." Yuki said while rubbing the her cheek. Feeling like her stomach was in a pit after hearing the old woman. 'Did I seriously get reincarnated into a city thats against demi-humans?!' She exclaimed inside her mind.

"Anyways... We need to get you out of here... For your own safety." The old woman let out a long sigh after a momentary pause. She turned around and gestured Yuki to follow her.

Yuki hesitantly followed her with her mind racing. 'I just barely got reincarnated and there's already been major problems... What the fuck is my luck?' Yuki internally face palmed while cursing her luck.

After walking for a short bit, the old woman paused in front of a dusty door, opening it slowly it revealed a storage room filled with empty wooden boxes and crates. The old woman quickly started to look through the boxes and crates before stopping in front of a certain one.

Opening it, the old woman found a torn black cloak that had a hood and gestured for Yuki to take it.

Hesitating a bit Yuki took it and noticed it was a relatively big cloak. Staring in a daze at it she put it on. The cloak entirely covered her body, even her tail, and the hood covered her head and the upper part of her face.

"Hm not bad..." The old woman commented after seeing Yuki in the cloak. 

Yuki looked at the old woman with an expressionless face. "How is this going to help me get away from here?" Yuki asked.

"Well... They can't really identify if its you under that cloak unless they know that your face has been mostly healed somehow." The old woman replied before continuing. "Now that we got you something to cover yourself we have to leave when it gets dark." 

Soon after the duo left the storage room. Soon after they made it to the dining room, where many of the kids were sitting on the ground with trays that had bits of food on it.

"Director!! And.. Who is this?" A young girl around 7 hopped up off the ground when seeing the old woman and Yuki arrive into the dining room.

"Ja- Yuki, it's me Yuki." Yuki said with a stiff expression, while pulling off the hood.

"Oh sister Yuki!" The young girl exclaimed before rushing to give Yuki a hug. "I was worried the director said you got seriously hurt!" The young girl said while rubbing her face against Yuki, and her voice was breaking near the end.

Yuki had a stiffer expression on her face at being called sister, and being hugged by a random girl she hasn't met after being reincarnated. "I-It's okay I'm fine just a bit bruised..." She said while patting the little girls head. 

The director looked at how Yuki was interacting, noticing a major difference how Yuki is acting before waking up and after. 'Did she lose her memories...? Or did something else happen?' The director asked inside her mind.

"Sierra, please be gentle next time, we don't know if Yuki has any internal injuries." The director said as she saw Sierra hug Yuki tighter.

"Mmn... Sorry." Sierra said in a soft voice before letting go of Yuki. "Also, why are you wearing that cloak sister Yuki?" She asked while rubbing her eyes a bit.

"Uh... There's a problem and I have to leave this place..." Yuki responded without thinking.  Sierra looked at Yuki with wide eyes before bursting into tears again. 

Taking a moment to realize what she caused Yuki quickly calmed Sierra down.

"W-why Why do you have to leave?" Sierra asked while latching onto Yuki. 

"Um..." Yuki looked at the director for help, while noticing the rest of the kids didn't care at all.

"Basically, Yuki's old enough to be on her own, she was injured but that was due to her proving herself to be strong enough on her own, right Yuki?" The director lied while looking at Yuki.

"Erm- Yes, what the director said was true, but don't worry Sierra, I'll possibly come back in the future." Yuki said while prying Sierra off and gave her an awkward smile. 

"Promise?" Sierra looked at Yuki with her eyes still a bit teary.

"I promise." Yuki promised before patting Sierra on the head.

After talking for a bit, and of course Yuki being a bit awkward since this is all new to her, it was finally time for her to leave.
