“What do you think about that boy?”

“The young master of He clan is a peculiar one.”

“Senior. How so?”

“Most young masters of prestiged clans I have met are brats that only know how to throw their family name around.”

“Shouldn’t the difference in his attitude be because we saved him?”

“Their attitudes don’t change just because you saved them.”

My blunt remark earns a reaction from her.

“Believe me. The only thing they are educated about is the name of other prestiged families to avoid making enemies.”

“Senior brother. Do you know about He clan?”

“Not personally. Their name came up during my study. They are infamous for their martial art, the “Ghost general of myriad (ten thousands) souls”. It’s a martial art specialised in yin qi more so than that of other just sects and clans. You see the hound shrivelled up among those killed by young master He?”

“Yes, senior.”

“That’s the effect of too much yin qi. Judging by his age and the type of wound on that hound, it’s likely Ghost wave, a palm technique from the Ghost general of myriad souls manual.”

“That technique seems dangerous.”

“It is. However, it has weaknesses. Since it only injects yin qi into you, cultivators with ample of yang qi can neutralise it. Even if it hits you, as long as you can deal with the yin qi there is nothing to fear. Moreover, since it uses yin qi, cultivators of the Ghost wave have to store more yin qi in their body to immediately release the technique when needed instead of converting when needed. This harms their body because anything that lives needs more yang than yin.”

“He shouldn’t have learned such technique.”

“You speak as if he has a choice.” I pause to locate the rest of her vessels. “That martial art is the legacy of their clan. It’s necessary that the next generation can use it.”

“For the prestige of the clan?”

“It is.”

“Truly a waste.”

“What are you talking about?”

“According to your attitude, that martial art isn’t even the strongest in the world, and yet children of such clan had to risk their life to learn such a tool.”

“You speak as if they could stumble upon a better martial art.”

“As long as they live, their future is manifold. Who could say they won’t invent something greater.”

“Blood claws tear through iron is originally a dangerous technique that out of ten practitioners, seven would die, two would be crippled, and only one have mediocre success. It was not until the Wicked god of Demon flame discovered the true essence of the technique and developed an entire martial art to balance out its disadvantages that Blood claws stopped being a martial art that brings misfortune to its practitioners. Don’t you think the same would happen to Ghost general?”

“Your words hold truth but they are incomplete, senior. What’s so important about a technique that it justifies throwing life at it? The way I am seeing it, you can always try the safer options. The dangerous path should only be left to those who truly want to cross. Just don’t impose it onto the young ones for a reason as vain as legacy.”

“You must be joking. What is vain about protecting one’s legacy?

When you die, it’s your legacy that would go on and spread out generation after generation. Countless heroes, countless geniuses had fought to protect, to grow their respective legacy.

You are a member of your family. I know that you are an orphan but can you seriously say that your parents didn’t love you? Can you say that you do not want to protect their legacy? It’s the only thing you have left. It’s the only thing that connects you to your parents!“

“Senior.”

I inhale and calm my heart. “Sorry. I raised my voice. However, abandon that way of thinking. That’s unfilial. You will be treading the wrong part if you keep such thinking.”

“Senior. Why do you think so?”

“What do you mean “why”!? Isn’t it obvious?”

“Senior.”

It’s the second time. A cultivator should not give in to emotion. “I raised my voice again. That’s unbecoming of me.”

“It seems to me you have a very intimate reason for your belief.”

“It’s not a belief. It’s the truth!”

The atmosphere weighed down heavily because of my outburst. However, she stays extremely calm. I feel somewhat embarrassed like a child throwing his tantrum. Meanwhile, she patiently waits for my upset to subsidise.

“Senior. Can I hear your reason?”
